In the UK good broadband isn't usually a matter of money but more a matter of geography.

I gave my sister the gift of the internets for Christmas and she lives ten minutes walk away from mother who could (if she wanted it, which she doesn't) have one of the fastest most stable connections in the country.

But the best I could get for her (regardless of price) was the same I have here in central Scotland which is rather slow.

I don't think the donations have put pressure on Ady anymore than Ady put pressure on people to donate.

Those who could and wanted to donated and it opened up possibilities for Ady to explore that he probably wouldn't have considered when he started.

The connections he has made and the skills and equipment he has gathered around him will make the task of making the other Revisted projects better than they would have been just using the skill set he developed doing ANH:R.

Expectations have risen because of HD more than anything.

ANH:R MK 1 looked amazing when compared to the 2004 DVD and while it still looks better, the comparison with Blu-Ray is bound to be a little less startling.

As someone who hasn't got a wall of telly or a Blu-Ray player I personally live in blissful ignorance of such matters.

I honestly would say that the SD ANH:R definitely outshines the Bluray. Adywan's release offers very consistent quality, where scenes on the bluray were hit and miss. Some looked great while others, especially in constrast to the preceding scene, were greatly overwhelming.

It also seems as if some edge enhancement was used in a number of shots in the OT blu-rays also, which doesn't surprise me since these BD's are essentially the dvd masters.

Now that's simply not true, is it. The masters used on the blu-rays are not SD masters, and even if HD masters had been used for the DVD release previously,  the results are noticeably better on blu-ray.

As far as we can gather, the 97 SE was scanned at 1080p (the same resolution Episodes 2 & 3 were recorded at) and further modified at that resolution into what was put on DVD and shown on HDTV. That 1080p master was again used for the Blu-ray, uncompressed, but still bearing a lot of the problems the DVD apparently had at its source.

The resolution is better, everything else is pretty much the same, because they come from the same master, so it's simply perfectly true.

It is very sad, films which are currently being restored and released on BD are commonly scanned at 4k or higher....and the master that was used for the SWBD's was scanned at 2k in the mid 90's.....and theres possibly no chance of a higher scan of the original cells because they won't contain all 'the improvements' that Lucas has given us since then.....but what about Ultra HD currently in development?

For someone who prides himself in pushing for digital over film, you'd think he'd had the foresight that 2k wouldn't be sufficient for long.

Let me stress that Episode 1 was mastered at 2k Episodes 2 & 3 were recorded at 1080p. Lucas doesn't want the "second" trilogy outshining the "first", does he now?

I just went and looked up the camera (it appears they used the Sony HDW-F900) -- though I don't understand how they shot at just 1080p, if they were not only playing in cinemas, but also using the films as proponents for digital cinema projection systems (which, if my memory serves me, project at at least 2K). Seems strange, doesn't it?

Yes, the prequels seemed very strange to me as well.

Guys, we're talking about the master of misdirection here, remember?  How many times did he lie and say he was done modifying the films?  How many times did he say the OT would never be released on DVD in any form?  How many times has he retconned his own personal history of the making of the films?

To that end, how do we know he hasn't already had better scans done of everything we want and is holding out for future releases?  He's sticking with his "2K scan" story for now because that's the limit of what current home technology can deliver.  If he released better versions now, he wouldn't be able to infinity-dip later on by selling it to us again as yet another "improved" version.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

It seems that although it was shot at 1080p, it was mastered at 2k:

I'm guessing 2k will be the next home format, so SW is future proof for a little while....

Sorry to burst your bubble but 1080p IS 2k.......1080 x 1920(2k)

Well, actually 2K is 2048x1152 but that's a difference hardly worth getting excited about and it is doubtful that it will be the next home format, since the difference would be practically unnoticeable, so there would be no good reason to make a whole new format for it.

I just read somewhere that there are currently some 4K TVs being introduced to the market and 4K capable Blu-Ray players should be introduced soon. When that becomes standard, the prequels are screwed and in the current state of things, so are the OT SEs (and so is Avatar for that matter).

Yep 4k seems to be the next HD standard, 'Ultra HD', Apples iTV in the pipeline

They can still be released uncompressed.

Uncompressed would definitely be nice, but that becomes an issue of replacing BluRay with a new format that can handle it.

I'm slightly confused when it comes to 2k, because it seems that the official resolution of it is 2048x1556, which is another million pixels when used in its entirety, but is a 4:3 format

I've always wondered why BluRay opted for hardcoded black bars rather than anamorphic... seems anamorphic full 2k might be a worthy step up in HD quality...
