(Guys, I really love you. Your conversation is among the funniest things of this day)

BTW, excellent job Ady, looks perfect.

“I have to say that I felt George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.” - James Cameron about Episode VII.

Yeah, I’m not seeing any rough rotoscoping in the trooper shot myself.

Maybe it’s just me, but the background is at a lower resolution than the trooper, and the lighting doesn’t match.

Myself, the boy, two droids, and no questions asked.

I’m not sure if either of those statements are true.

Looking at it again and paying attention to both things you mentioned, I still don’t see any problems with it.

Are you talking about how the background is blurry? That’s because of the depth of field in the shot. The background in the original shot is closer to the actor, so it’s more in focus. It’s adequately blurry given the depth of field of the shot and how far away the new background is.

Here is a quick look at the opening shot of ANH:RHD. The one good thing about having to start everything from scratch is that i am able to utilise sources that were not available at the time, like HD scans of many of the original Matte Paintings. Plus i have learned a great deal since i completed ANH:R, so i am able to fix a few things that i wasn’t able to fix first time around. It would have been impossible to accurately recreate the original version anyway.

And fixed the background issue with the trooper…

nice to see the change…😃

Actually, if anything, the part of the wall on the left nearest the camera might be too in-focus given how out-of-focus the blaster is.

In the opening scene on the Tantive IV when the rebels are setting up to defend the airlock, one of them leans on a door frame. The antenna on his helmet is tall enough to go out of frame and aligns well enough with the door that that it looks like a crack or a seam in the door’s frame and makes it look like it’s rotating with the trooper when he leans on it.

For quite a while this kept distracting me when watching that scene and was only while I was writing this post and watching the scene in slow motion that I realized that it was actually part of the guy’s helmet and not a seam in the door’s frame.

Is it possible to shorten or remove the antennae from the shot? I realize I’m probably the only one this bothers, but I thought it couldn’t hurt to ask.

It’s on the left side of the frame: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbn-Ox1XawI&t=0m56s

That would create a continuity error with the other troops. The same kind of small errors that these edits are great at fixing, not creating.
Anyway, it’s not actually a mistake in the film, so I don’t think anything needs to change here.
And now that you know what you’re actually seeing, it shouldn’t be an issue anymore, right?

The antenna is kinda scraggly though, maybe replacing it with a shiny new one wouldn’t be a terrible change.

Doesn’t help that it could be mistaken for a crack in the wall, but whatever.

The Rebels barely scrape by and have to use second hand equipment. Give this guy a shiny new antenna, and some rebel soldier somewhere will have to go without a food ration. Is that really what you want?

Seeing as the helmet antennas are probably decorative, let them eat rations.

I hope Ady is kind enough to make available some of the HD screenshots without any logos so that we can use them as a background image on our laptops and computers, the Tatooine examples are absolutely astounding!

Fixed the misaligned flash effect on the Stardestroyer…

And fixed the background issue with the trooper…

I like the way the opening shot looks a lot, and the Trooper shot obviously, nice touch on the mis-aligned flash element also.

I looked at this part for quite a time and I will try to pass on some notable things I discovered or found interesting about it.

As the opening shot goes on and the star destroyer shrinks in to the distance we hear quite a lot of Laser fire but see no Lasers… I thought about this a bit and I found a small CGI clip by Lucusfilm for some IMAX presentation. It was a recreation of the opening in CGI… Although it does not look all that good the thing I thought that was good was seeing Red Lasers coming towards Camera around the Star Destroyer as the shot is finishing. It “Could Be” that it is actually missing lasers towards the end of the shot. This IMAX CGI clip might be a restoration of sorts of what was actually left out the shot?

https://youtu.be/qQjY7ZDWFNo?t=59

Upon the next Shot of the Tantive approaching camera there are to and fro splices missing. The sound mix does not match the action unless you splice the footage up. On the Tantive explosion shot the first part of the shot should have the Tantive Firing a Red Laser we then cut back to the Red Lasers Appearing off screen on the 2nd shot. Star Destroyer Shoots again cut back to remainder of Tantive being blown up.

Now in your previous version of the Battle with the Storm troopers in the corridor you did a good job of improving things here… But it is not entirely correct how you re-arranged it. I will give you now a bit of info about note worthy shot continuity order that I found.

When we have the Scene of 3p0 and R2-D2 in the corridor… The splice to the soldiers shooting should be removed from this part…This needs to move to the opening section of corridor Battle.

The shot of the Storm troopers Shooting and traversing the Corner replaces the Dissolve as the Storm Troopers reach the end of the first Corridor.

R2-D2 and C3-P0 traverse the Corridor in one shot without interuption (The explosion is in synch with theatrical mix). cutting between the shots of the soldiers running and the Storm Troopers in this corridor firing is correct. Darth Vaders Entrance comes a bit earlier matching (Synch) theatrical sound mix listen to Vaders footsteps carefully.

R2-D2 in the next shot is also missing a Splice… R2-D2 in corridor (without card insertion) Cut to C3P0 entrance. Now the Long shot of Leia putting in the card splice to Remainder of the opening shot card insertion section. Doing this also synchs R2-D2’s wheels (Theatrical mix) hitting the ground as he comes towards C3-P0.

I understand you have your own ideas and how you may want to do your edit… But many issues can be resolved by simple editing (Splices) Use the Theatrical mix to spot discrepancies between the action and the sound mix. Lot’s of missing Splices in this part of the film… I hope you take a simple approach to some of these issues and give some of these a try at least, I think you might be pleased with some of these results and they are very simple.

Good Luck and keep up the Good work!

EDIT:

The Best way to explain this kind of stuff is to supply a demo of what I am actually trying to say… Too Complex to read. So I will Show instead in this Demo below.

https://vimeo.com/353224943

Now looking at how you did the continuity for the first corridor battle part I agree with it but it’s all about that shot from the C3-PO Corridor part that is Missing. I always planned to copy your scene arrangement for the first corridor Battle and then expand on it with that shot but never got around to doing it basically. So Ignore the scene order here only the placement of that shot of soldiers from the R2-D2 and C3P0 dash that should move to the first corridor battle. The rest is just a different interpretation but this was just me fiddling about to be honest and trying to get it running a bit more smoothly or better and trying to find a way of making it make a bit more sense. Ultimately I never finished this sequence entirely but it is a rough framework.

EDIT2: Further Thoughts

  1. Should the point the Tanitive get’s hit coincide with C3-P0’s comment about the main reactor being hit rather than a while after the fact?

  2. On the second corridor fight should we see the rebel troops running to the end of the corridor before R2 and C3P0 make a dash across and the sequence ends on the expolosion? I have a feeling that on the shot of the Rebels running one guard turns and fires this might lead into the stormtrooper being hit? It’s all there but it’s totally out of sequence…

  3. There are definitely more splices to be found.

You guys probably already saw this making off (and the completed scene of course):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8mfcS4vci4

I wonder if something like this could be done to ANH:R. For years I thought that new scenes could be added by filming with actors against a green screen, after all, anyone can play Vader and Obi-wan has his head covered, what makes it possible to have someone to play his role too. Not as it was done by FX if Ady doesn’t think it fits, but as something new that could be used to improve the original scene.

What do you guys think?

During the scene when Luke meets Biggs in the rebel hangar that was later added back into the film for the SE, there’s a bit of dialogue from Red Leader saying he met Luke’s father when he was a pilot as a young boy was removed

Since the OT:R exists for the OT alone, is there a possibility reinserting it?

Here’s a thought I’ve had for a while:

Deepfake “Fake Wedge” with the correct face. Or if that’s not possible, recast his voice with someone else. Recolor his hair too? Push him past his “Fake Wedgeness” just far enough to make him into another character (and, yes, I know they eventually turned that dude into another character in the EU or something).

That’s what I was- well, I was suggesting one of two things:

1: Deepfake him to look like the actual Wedge
2: Change him visually (like hair color?) as well as vocally to make him someone else

He’s only in a few shots, a deepfake could be fun to have mocked up, anyway.

PM me for links to my edits; apparently, some feel shy about this.

I don’t think it’d be hard for Ady to get a voice actor to dub the one line. That’s a bit easier than recoloring his hair or a deepfake replacement.

Given how Dennis Lawson later did voiceover work for the Rogue Squadron games, I’m surprised he didn’t redub his ANH and ESB lines. Heck, said time would have been perfect to separate fake (using the original VA, who later appeared in R1) & real Wedge.

I’d agree that deepfaking fake wedge would be great, though I’m not familiar enough with the process to know how much work that would be. I’ve seen a lot of impressive deepfake videos but most still have noticeable artifacting, so I would only say it would be good if it can be done to a certain level of quality.
