Also Jaitea, I actually really like your "reactor". Gives the bottomless pits a purpose and I don't think it draws the eye at all. It only does us because we know it's been added, I think.

So which version has 3PO's dialog and which does not? Growing up I mostly watched the version in the original vhs box set:

Did this have it? If not I'm unsure why it's so familiar to me. And if it does have it, what version did all of you who aren't familiar with it watch?

Before I got the set I used to rent an older copy that had different cover art. Maybe that's it?

EDIT: thanks Ash!

Yep, that set uses the 1985 mix, so yes, it has the tractor beam line.  That's the set I grew up with, as well - I even made DVD covers in that style (though I've since lost them, and no one else seems to have them, sadly).

Jaitea, as much as I like the concept of those, they're so visually busy once in motion that my eyes are strongly drawn to them, rather than to the focus of the scenes.

........when I first posted that clip on the ANH:R:SE thread nobody noticed the monitor bit, they were focussed on the DS chasm reactor. Ah well....

Interesting ideas regarding altering the DS display screens, but I'm in the "keep it as is" camp.  There's nothing inherently wrong with the existing displays (they totally look like they could be scanning, giving read outs, etc.).  In fact, I find "older looking" displays look more realistic than a lot of newer ones -- I believe the technology could actually be real in the OT, whereas I find the displays and tech in the PT often hard to swallow.

As for the youtube clip, the display in the control room looks like a Windows Media Player visualization during MP3 playback, and that energy beam in the chasm is way too much flash.

I'm agreed on the displays - people don't seem to notice them either way, so I say keep them as is. Or if things are going to be changed, make it subtle.

As for the new chasm, I'm in favour of it. How many people here have wondered what these big pits were for?

I'd imagine the chasms are only used when the Death Star is firing. Why would they need to have energy flowing through them all the time?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I like the idea of using updated monitor images; however, perhaps a nice balance of old and new is in order as opposed to the over the top displays used in the prequel trilogy.

Well that's my point. I shouldn't have to struggle to focus on the intended focus of the scene.

Adywan, I remember reading a while back about the process you went through to recreate that scene with the droids crossing in front of the land speeder (right before the stormtrooper asks "How long have you had these droids?").  I can't remember precisely what you did, but it involved several layers, masks, and the letterboxed/lo-res GOUT.

Later I was watching "Empire of Dreams" and at around 39 mins I noticed there is a great quality, original version of that scene (with the droids, not the dinosaur).  And it's anamorphic too.  Surely that can be of use to you next time you go through the process.  Maybe if we are lucky, we'll get "Empire of Dreams" in 1080 on upcoming the BluRay.

I just checked the Empire of Dreams but A) It's not there from the beginning B) It's an alternate take from a different angle C) The quality isn't great.

But, man, I totally forgot how great the footage from the films looks in the EoD, I wish the DVDs looked like that. I wonder what the source was. It's possible they used the same source files as the 97SE broadcasts but I don't know...

Yarg! You are right. I should've compared on the PC before I posted.  FWIW, here are the grabs, one from my upscaled GOUT, the other from "Empire of Dreams".

Adywan, first of all...THANK YOU! I wish I could know you better because anyone who puts so much work and attention to the Star Wars series is someone I would really like. I came across the site and originaltrilogy.com by complete accident when I was browsing another site about current movies. I never knew anyone did this kindof thing and to find out its been going on for years I must admit I'm ashamed of myself because I try to keep up with anything Star Wars. I'm also ashamed that I dissed another editor on OT.com when I viewed and read about some of his edit work and didn't appreciate it and let him know about it in the forum, after I received some nasty responses from other readers I came to the conclusion everyone can have they're own interpretation of what Star Wars is to them. That's why I get so upset when fans diss G.Lucas for adding to his trilogy...he is basically like any editor on these sites, except he is the Creator of it All!,some of it I really like ,some I don't. Back to you though,lol...your a genious ,I LOVE "revisited"..the attention to details, the crisp and High res image quality and your imagination to expand on what I already loved is outstanding. BTW,I also wanted to comment on your work on "the phantom menace" and "the empire strikes back"...I've never seen better prints of these movies...even when they were in the movies!(theaters). In closing, thanks for your hard work and your upcoming projects...Keep Em' Coming!

lordsidi, the main difference between George's Special Editions and fan edits is Lucas' burying of the original material. When a fan editor does what he or she does they don't destroy the original and most of the time go out of their way to encourage people to own the original version. If his SEs were just alternate versions the majority of criticism about them would vanish, if he spent a bit more time making his changes work and used a bit more in the way of critical selectivity when making them probably all the criticism would vanish. I don't think people are as vocal about James Cameron's or Steven Spielberg's reworked or extended versions of their films because the original versions are still available and in most cases still the default ones.

Actually Adywan has released DVD reconstructions of the original theatrical Empire and the 1999 theatrical Menace.  On top of that, he's also released an AVCHD 1080p version of Menace, and one of Empire that's a reconstruction of the 1997 SE (and another AVCHD of ANH that's the 2004 SE, but with Han shooting first instead of Greedo).  So lordsidi is correct.

And yeah, the reason most (such as myself) have a problem with the SE's is that they've replaced the original versions, which Lucas simply refuses to restore and release properly, unlike Ridley Scott (all 5 versions of Blade Runner available in 1080p on one Blu-Ray set), Spielberg (all 3 versions of Close Encounters, same thing), James Cameron (both versions of Aliens, Terminator 2, all three versions of Avatar, etc.), and other directors who are more than willing to make all official versions of their work available to the public in high quality.

If Lucas would only do that, we'd all stop bitching pretty damn quickly.

Jaitea I love your chasm, I feal the same as brash they only stand out cos we know there not originaly there. Also love the hologram of the report to Tarkin, imo that looks correct if you know what I mean, it fits so well and dosnt look out of place at'all, and your editing  of the scene. Sorry if I'm being ignorant but what was the source as looks great.

Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but I haven't complained once about the revisions.   The over-all story of the hero's journey is still the same, and I enjoy the films too much to focus on the little things that are wrong with them.  Theatrical, Special Edition or Revisited.  It's all good to me.  And if Lucas doesn't want to restore and release the the theatrical versions then it's not the end of the world.  It's his decision, and they are legally his movies.

Author
Time

Oh, I've definitely complained about the revisions.  If I want to watch Star Wars to watch Star Wars, I will never put in either SE or Revisited (as well as Revisited is done) simply because each time there's a change, it yanks me right the fuck out of the movie, screaming "HEY!  This is new!  Isn't this so much better than the old shot?  It's all shiny and CG!"

So I guess I wasn't being entirely honest when I implied that the suppression of the originals was the only reason I bitch about the SE's and refuse to buy them.  I have big problems with the changes themselves.

But I respect Lucas' right to make said changes, and I would shut the fuck up real fast if he released a Blade Runner- or CE3K-esque set with all the various versions preserved in the best possible quality.  He could replace OT Yoda with CG Yoda, and as long as the 1980/1983 versions are available in equal or similar quality to the newest one, I wouldn't say one word about it.

But if they're not, you bet your ass I'll be the most vocal, bitchy, purist fanboy in the world until they are released.

Sorry to disappoint you, ChainsawAsh, but...I don't gamble ^^  And I think it's just silly to whine about something you really don't have any control over, especially if it's someone else's movie.  Sure, you can re-edit or "despecial-editionize" the original trilogy to your heart's content, but that's not gonna stop the man who created Star Wars to begin with from making his films more to his satisfaction.

And let's be honest.  Lucas isn't going to please all of the fans because there are billions and billions of fans, and Lucas it too busy running his own business to get to know what each one of them wants.

Thankfully, he's kind enough to allow the fans to make fan-edits of his films so that they can a version that they be happy with.

Lucas is too busy to know what the fans want? That's total crap! It's not like he's constantly getting harassed by a billion fans who each want something totally different. If he would just make HD prints of the original films as available as the SE's, there would be no problem.

I mean, it's practically standard that the original be released with the new versions on DVD/BR (blade runner, alien, aliens, ect ect). Lucas is the only film maker I can think if who is suppressing the original versions.

Of course, you don't.  And I never said that you did.  I just think that it's kinda pointless to complain about something that someone else created.
