Adywan, maybe I am being parinoid, but maybe you should work on this project on a computer not hooked to the internet or an ethernet. This would stop anything bad being pumped into your computer.
My new Core2Duo machine is being used solely for this edit and isn't connected to the net. My old P4 is now being used just for surfing and all other PC things. I'm not taking any chances. . The problem i had this time was due to a dodgy motherboard anyway.
You know, I don't know why I have such good luck. I'm 26, and I've used computers at home for 10 years. In that time, I've never had a system failure and never had a significant virus/malware infection. Knock on wood.

The PC i use for this edit is on 24/7 so i guess things are going to wear out a lot quicker. God my electric bill has been horrendous since i started this edit, but it will be worth it in the end.

Have you started back up yet or are you still holding off for a little while before you jump back in with the project? Not trying to get pushy I was just wondering

I've started work on replacing the lost footage but with losing the drive i have about 14gb of space left so I'm gonna run out of space real fast. Once that space has gone then things will halt until i have enough funds for the replacement drives.

I'm so, so sorry Adywan but when will we be able to see another download of yours?

hmm... I'd be willing to contribute a little something to help ensure this thing sees the light of day. As long as you can wait at least about a week. Being paid monthly is painful.

So you didn't read the last page and a half? The man just had his computer dump on him and your asking for a new download? lol

Hey Adywan and vbangle,

Just showed a Star Wars fan and friend of mine at work the redone Tie Fighter attack and he flipped out of his seat with excitement. I told him of the recent computer woes and right then and there he whipped out his wallet and gave me $5, all the cash he had on him, but still, that's the effect this Revisited is having on even the casual fans.

Adywan, look for that $5 in the form of a Paypal transfer Saturday. I promised my friend I'd contribute his cash to the cause.

I'll chip in next week when I get paid. A little strapped for cash at the moment (new baby arriving in a couple of weeks), but I'll chip in what I can.

Hope it's all going good Ady man!

I can't donate anything at the moment, but do yourself a favor and get that data backed up as soon as possible.

I had the same thing happen to myself several months ago. Got the same error but it was from Win2k. And it did the same thing. I was ready to plunk down $1000 to recover all the data. I had 10 years worth of data stored on that drive. Luckily, the only thing that was lost, after I recovered everything else, was the capture of my wedding video (I had the original tape) and some honeymoon photos that were stored on another computer.

With the 3 drives, you'll definitely want to either go with a RAID 1 with a hotspare or a RAID 5. I'd suggest a RAID 1 so that when one drive dies the spare takes over immediately. Then you can get a replacement drive without having to worry about losing another drive. If you do RAID 5 and lose a drive and aren't able to get it replaced before the next one dies, you're screwed.

In a nutshell, consider how much this project is worth to you and how you felt when everything was lost. If you don't want to feel that way again, get the multiple drives. Oh, and be sure to get a nice huge external drive for backups. Redundancy is never a bad thing

So sorry to hear about your computer woes adywan. I had a hard drive crap out on me recently as well. Thankfully nothing very important was on it. I also had a Premiere project file become corrupt a few weeks ago which won't even open anymore. It was my final film project last semester, though thankfully I had already turned it in.

Losing an entire drive and having to buy a new one is horrible. Even worse, losing files you poured hours and hours of your time into is extremely heartbreaking. I'm more than broke at the moment, but I will help you out when my student loan money comes in at the end of next week.

Adywan,

Have you seen the final episode of Stargate SG-1?

It looks like the effects guys used your Alderaan explosion.

If I'd had a drink in my mouth, I would have spit it out!

I know you used a Stargate shot (from the 200th episode for your version), but this one had the double explosion, angled praxis shock wave, and everything.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Yeh, that's the explosion i used in the end. The final episode was transmitted In Hi-def on the UK's SKYONE quite a few months ago. I was really surprised that we got to see the final episode ages before the US did.

At least one good thing has come out of the hell that happened recently. the colour correction has turned out 10x better than it looked originally so i've gone back and redone quite a few scenes so far and been able to correct a lot of shots that i was just not happy with. Fore example, if you look at the cockpit scenes aboard the falcon Han's shirt suddenly turns from a yellow to bright white (well blue on the 2004 dvd's, lol.) i've corrected this and now Han's shirt is now yellow/tan throughout these shots. had to do a lot of masking work to achieve this but its was worth it. The colour correction will never be perfect because of the state of the DVD's. Skin tones are all shot to hell but i've managed to get some good results so far, but some shots are beyond hope.

Space is a huge factor now. probably got 2 days left of work left until there is no more space available. Tried to free up a lot of space by deleting un-needed video clips but i can't because i need them all just in case i need to go back and tweak anything, so if i deleted them after effects projects would be corrupt. oh well.

Oh well, all I can say, I guess, is that I can somehow relate to what you may feel now... there is some truth in the words that great projects encounter big problems (hey, even George had major problems with SW) and I experienced this truth first hand as well... not so long time ago my first HDD started giving me warning signals (BSOD due to bad sectors) so I moved data to second drive to burn backup DVDs... and shortly after that second drive died without a warning...

To quote captain Taggart from Galaxy Quest: "Never give up. Never surrender". Don't loose hope. May your project see its successful ending.

Hey Adywan,

Just sent some money to your PayPal account. Too bad it'll only be half of what I sent once it gets to your end (damn exchange rate... )

Adywan,

If you don't mind waiting a little while, I'll gladly throw a little cash your way to help out. This is the only fan edit project I'm truly excited to see at this point and I think it's worthy of a donation.

Adywan,

So glad to hear that the second pass with all the doing-over has had some positive results. I believe I stated when you had the computer meltdown:

With all of your experience and reflexive knowledge now, I believe anything you may end up losing you will be able to bring back faster and possibly better (to your eye, because to mine it was already perfect) than before.

You know the movie visually better than anyone at Lucasfilm, that's for sure. Check your e-mail by the way. Happy birthday, Ady', even if it is early or late - got a gift for you.

Keep up the good work, we'll keep the wolves at bay.

You don't seem to have much luck with your hard drives do you? I've had the same drives in my machine for about 5 years now and no probs. What make do you (or your friends) use?

Oh, one more thing that might be useful
(please disregard this message if you already know this)

Someone mentioned old X-Wing vs TIE Fighter games as a good source of "clean" space-based sound F/X. Another good source, this time for land-based ones (anyone needing those landspeeder effects?) would be Jedi Outcast / Jedi Academy. Since they were made on Quake engine, the *.pk3 files can be simply unpacked using WinZIP/WinRAR to access "clean" (ie. no music in background etc.) sound F/X resources.

Anyone know how you would unpack the sound effects on the Behind the Magic CD-ROM? Those are great sound effects. I've tried to unpack the bundle file, but I can't seem to accomplish it.

I tried that myself, nohandluke. The only solution I came up with was recording the sound effects during playback using Perfect Sound Recorder, then cleaning up the resulting mp3 files.

I also managed to record snippets of landspeeder effects from the Original Radio Drama. By cutting out dialogue, and with some tinkering, I managed to get a decent, steady landspeeder "hum" effect, which I sent Adywan. Not sure how good the quality was for what he needed it for, but it's about the best I could do -- landspeeder effects don't seem to be plentiful or readily available.

I'm going on holiday for a while so I thought I'd just wish you, adywan, the best of luck with your edit. It's just fantastic that you did not loose as much of your progress as you did the last time. You're probably fixing it already, but I thought I'd mention how some of the green laser bolts in the death star battle have a strange blue glow around them, even though they are still green. Anyway, may the force be with you.
