well ideally, with everything that has happened, i'm looking to get 2 hard drives. 1 to replace the faulty one and the second to be used as a removable drive with copies of all the finished footage & important files.

Perhaps getting three drives, with two going into a mirrored RAID as an extra precaution?

In theory a good idea but that opens a whole other can of worms....and in the middle of a project is probably not the time to experiment with a RAID setup.....

As a side note, here's a cap of the shot of what is possibly Peter Mayhew's head that was being discussed a little further back in the thread. I dunno... maybe it is Peter's head, maybe it isn't. Personally, I think it's inconclusive enough to let it go, although I suppose simply altering the hue to make the hair appear more "brownish" wouldn't be a big deal either.

Adywan - How much are the components you need? I'm not asking you to ask for money - I'm simply asking to find out what all this costs. Got a figure to throw out there?

I'd be willing to pitch in as well ...

3*500GB drives at newegg are roughly $300 and a RAID card I think can be found for $30-40

so split that up between 20 or so people...easy as butta'

Congratulations on recovering so much of the data, adywan! I'm really glad that you didn't lose all of your work. Like I said, I've been there, and I know how much it stinks (that's a bit of an understatement, actually).

Anyways, yes, I too would like to know how much money you think this is going to cost. Are you going Firewire or USB? I've found that external drives (in particular, ones from Western Digital) have been going on sale a lot these days -- stores like Best Buy seem to have a sale on them almost every week. If it would help, it might also be possible for one of us in the US to get you the drives if there was a fantastic deal on them that you couldn't get in the UK, and then ship them to you . . . of course, we'd have to worry about packing them reeeeeeeeally well, but it's just a thought. Whatever it takes to get you the equipment you need, for the best price, in the fastest time, right?

Take care,
Sojourn

Well 3 drives would be a dream really. Luckily my new board has 8 SATA-II ports so i wouldn't need any external drives or a raid card, so it would be a lot cheaper. I've been looking at some drives and 500gb internal SATA-II are now only around the £70 mark and then all i would need to get is a good quality removable drive bay ( not over keen on any external solution due to bad experiences in the past with usb drives), which the bay would only be about £40 so i need to get about £250 in total. Having 3 drives would open up a new world (especially the third for backup alone). doing the fx for the death star battle takes up an amazing amount of space using the lagaryth codec. One shot alone can take up over 6gb of space before rendering. So i think i am going to go with the suggestions of 3 drives, but that would probably make me sound very greedy. And once this edit is finished i can get straight onto ESB & ROTJ

once again many thanks for all your support

250 pounds is nearly $500 American. That's still a bargain for all the work you're doing adywan. I'd be honored to donate for the cause. You're doing more on less than Lucas ever did with all the money in the world. We're all behind you, please don't give up, adywan.

Did you do your color correction in Vegas? If you still have the .veg files I'm curious as to why all your work on the beginning is lost?

no. It was a 3 step process. firstly i applied a basic global correction with VirtualDub, then imported into Vegas & applied correction separately shot by shot then imported shots that required separate colours to be suppressed or corrected into adobe after effects & created mattes & layers so that correct (or as close as possible given the source) elements would not be affected with further correction. An example would be lukes garage scene especially the last few shots. if you look in the background when beru calls him the once white doorway has now a horrible turquoise tint to it. Trying to remove this by a simple correction would have change elements in the foreground too much so i had to use after effects to do hell of a lot of shots like this. So i have a long process to replace all the missing footage to match the surviving footage (plus there are effects elements to redo too). So it is impossible just to load up the .veg file i'm afraid. I really wish it could be that simple

Good luck as always, Ady. I'd like to chip in like last time, but I'm a little strapped as I've got a ring to pay off.

Anyone have any idea how much it'd cost to ship a HDD to the UK from the states? Frys dot com has a sale for a Seagate 750GB Serial ATA/300 16MB Buffer drive for $200 shipped free (to the US of course) right now.

Yanks: The traditional port of call for UK electronics is ebuyer.com. They have 500gb SATAs going for £67 with free delivery, if that's any use. I wouldn't trust anyone to courier hard drives across the Atlantic.

I would never deal with ebuyer.com ever again. when i was getting the last 2 hard drives i ordered them and they made a mistake and sent me 20 but separately and charged me for 20 separate delivery charges. when we contacted them to complain and said that we would not be paying for more than 1 delivery charge because it was their fault they closed our account so i couldn't contact them through their system anymore , rang them up to see what was being done about it and got told to f**k off and that they have enough customers to do without our business, and we had to wait 6 months to even get our money back after they had received the drives even with solicitors letters and the bank getting involved. I now always use microdirect.co.uk. If i have ever had any problem then they have always sorted it out immediately and have always been more than willing to help.

I'll take that recommendation on board... in my experience all the online dealers are crap at customer service so I just use the cheapest one!

Adywan,

Glad to hear from you and know that you haven't given up. This will be hopefully the only major setback. Check the rest of the ship and make sure there are no more attached...chewing on the power cables.

2008 isn't that far away really. I could stand with a little more time to look forward to it. And if something does happen, don't hesitate to ask for help.

Adywan,

So sorry to hear about your loss, but at least you were able to salvage some stuff.

I'm glad to see you're persisting in spite of all of Lucasfilm's efforts, um, I mean, in spite of all the bad luck you're having.

I hope you can find the funds for two hard drives. Hopefully that will give you a good backup capability. Good luck!

I do wonder why it is that people working on major projects like this one always have all these problems when it gets close to release. Adywan, maybe I am being parinoid, but maybe you should work on this project on a computer not hooked to the internet or an ethernet. This would stop anything bad being pumped into your computer.

You know, I don't know why I have such good luck. I'm 26, and I've used computers at home for 10 years. In that time, I've never had a system failure and never had a significant virus/malware infection. Knock on wood.
