STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION — Page 465

I’m definitely of the opinion that adding the Imperial March is the exact kind of change this project exists for. If I wanted a purist experience I’d just watch the original like I do every other time.

That said, the placement would have to be right.

Let the past die. Kill it if you have to. It’s the only way to fanedit the way you were meant to.

It’s Imperial March not Darth Vader’s theme song. The Imperial March is in Episode 2,3, Rogue one and even Solo: A Star Wars story. In episode 6 it’s used when the Emperor arrives at the Death Star. Playing the Imperial March for the Revisited’s grand reveal of the Death Star is fitting. That being said, Rogue One Death Star music is fine. Whatever Adywan thinks is best for the scene.

John Willaims disagrees with you

I’d be in favour of a little Imperial March, if done tastefully. Echoing the sentiments of many others, if I wanted to watch the 1977 theatrical Star Wars with minimal revisionism, I’d load up 4K77; this project doesn’t need to be that.

A personal edit of mine has that aspect cut out of Rogue One. =)

I cannot believe we’re having the Flipper Debate again over a decade later. 😄 Ady removed the flipper arm after coming to the same conclusion the original crew must have, that it just begs the question of how he held a gun in the first place. But instead of following the original crew’s “just throw any arm on the floor”, Adywan made it the good Doctor’s. There’s no reason for him to change that.

There is a reason. It’s canonical and it’s the correct character from the original film.

You may disagree, but don’t say there is “no reason”.

I’ve said it time and time gain, canon means NOTHING when doing a fan edit. Why does the “Great Flipper Debate” keep rearing its head? lol. Anyway, you see Ponda in the cantina with flipper like hands when he is at the bar. Yet the hand belongs to none of them when we saw it cut off. There was no way at the time for me to replace the flipper hands at the bar with the “furry” hand we see severed. So i originally replaced the fur hand with the correct flipper. But that didn’t look right on screen. So , as we see the Doctor reaching for his gun, it was logical to swap it out for his. And it worked. But, i created a prop to do that shot. One i no longer have. Now it’s being done in 1080p i can not upscale the very low res footage i originally created and use it in the 1080p edit. I do now, however, MAYBE have the ability to remove the flippered hands from the shots where we see him at the bar and replace them with furry hands, so the original hand can come back. Especially now since we see him with the furry hands in Rogue One (Damn you Gareth. lol)

In the context of the high-action scenes preceding it, this feels too slow. Notice how Vader has already entered the space and is examining the bodies even as his theme continues to play, whereas the original has just a few dissonant notes which hold as he investigates the scene and the same musical idea picks up again as he leaves. It just fits the scene much better.

That’s not to say the Imperial March wouldn’t work here at all, just that it would need to be a shorter, sharper sting. It would also need to be propagated throughout the film with increasing depth and modulation to really act as Vader’s theme.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

My vote would be against the inclusion of the Imperial March in ANH:R. Personally I find it overused enough in Star Wars stuff as is. The little motif given to the Empire throughout ANH is far better anyway, and doesn’t get enough recognition honestly. I would hate to see it missing from any scenes in the film. Each Star Wars film’s soundtrack generally has its own unique feel to it, at least to me. I associate the Imperial March much more strongly with the later two instalments of the trilogy… Hard to articulate into words exactly, but it just would feel out of place.

The most overused thing in the franchise that needs to die is the bloody Wilhelm scream. I am at the point where I am happy if I can purge it from my own fanedits.

I’m in favour of the inclusion of the Imperial March. This project has often called itself ‘what the special editions should have been’. They’ve never been particularly purist; they’ve been about bringing up the originals to a lovely, more modern standard. Vader in ANH was a lesser villain, yes, but his character was more striking than Lucas anticipated on ANH’s release, so much so that the saga from that point grew around him. Whether or not Lucas/Williams paired Vader with the Imperial March on his first appearance, the two are now paired. It’s entirely appropriate that a project that seeks to polish the original trilogy pair the two in ANH retroactively.

This is exactly how I feel.

I think the fact that it was played subtly and gently at Vader’s death speaks volumes of its association with him.

Yes, it doesn’t have to be bombastic. Just something subtle, primarily when Vader arrives on the Tantive IV would be sufficient.

I do love the Imperial Theme in ANH, but I have a different preference than you, where I’d rather see it more in TESB and ROTJ. For example, the aforementioned arrival of the Emperor on the Death Star II would be a cool place to reference the original Imperial Theme with a similar time as that used when the Falcon is pulled into the first Death Star!

I guess I’ll chime in, too. I think including the Imperial March fits in well with this project’s intentions. It’s not meant to replace the original, but be an uncompromising Special Edition with good taste. Ideally, though, there wouldn’t be an ESB-thunder-stealing montage of an Imperial fleet when we first see the Death Star.

Not that any of it matters, as it’s Adywan’s call and he was clearly happy to include both in the original Revisited.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

I would miss the Battle of Hoth version of the march during the extended Death Star battle though if it was being removed.

Yeah that’s fantastic, even better then the other video honestly

He could totally use this version (the one that was originally going to be in ESB but replaced): https://youtu.be/30pQcy8AkIQ?t=164

Is the targeting computer for each gunner station on the Millennium Falcon going to be the same like on the Original Revisited? Or is it going to go back how it was before, considering The Force Awakens?

Is this really an issue? For all we know there’s different interfaces that a gunner can choose when they fire it up.
It’s like complaining about the hallway lights in the Falcon, in one movie they’re blue-ish in another green-ish Big deal, someone replaced the lights they’re a different color now. I’ve been in plenty of places where you walk through a store or down a hallway and there’s 2-3 different color flourescent lights, white/pink/grey combos. That’s how life is.

Um…

Speaking of the Falcon, what about the design of the interior lights in the Falcon, like in ESB?

There’s already going to be two music tracks for ANH right? One with Battle of the Heroes and one without? The Battle of the Heroes track could get the Imperial March, and the one without could have the Rogue One theme or something. That way both parties could get what they want.

Ady, random question. How much of ANH:R is going to be Native 1080p, or is there some upscaling required (I.E. from Topaz)?

Adywan posted this on the Revisited Facebook page two days ago:

“For the past couple of weeks I basically locked myself away and worked solidly transferring all the work I did for the 720p HD version over to the 1080p footage. Many shots have been pretty straight forward, just altering the composition resolution and replacing the 720p footage with the native 1080p footage and adjusting any effects to the new, higher resolution. Not all shots are as easy as this though, so quite a few are having to be done from scratch. But shutting myself off from the net for a couple of weeks worked wonders, and I can now inform you that I have already completed the first 56 minutes of the movie. This doesn’t mean, however, that this will be finished any time soon. I had completed about ¾ of the film in 720p but the remaining ¼ was shots that require a hell of a lot of FX work, rotoscoping etc. I should be able to post a short 1080p clip this coming week sometime.”

EDIT: I just realized this doesn’t quite answer your question. But, unless I’m wrong, it sounds like so far there’s been no upscaling per se, but maybe there will be some in the remaining one-fourth of the film Adywan has left to do.

Okay, I was just browsing YouTube and I came across this video and it got me thinking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3b_S_qtBgc

Now I’m suggesting remaking all the shot in 3D I don’t think it will feel right, however some of the interesting things they brought up in what the original composit lacked could be added I think.

Things like the shadowing on the fighters where some of them should be darker because they are in the shadow of the trench, could be simply achieved. Shadows on the trench might be harder.

Also I’m sure this is already on the list but fixing blue screen artifacts around the fighters and explosions.

Obviously it would be silly to add try and add the missing lighting from lasers and this wouldn’t mesh well with the visual style of the rest of the film however the lighting direction could be fixed similar to how Ady said the outside of the cantina.

TLDR: Just some simple compositing fixes that would really step up the trench run sequence.
