I've sent vbangle a PM. He has volunteered to upload it.

BTW, I mis-spoke. The file is an MPG, not AVI. Not that that really matters.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I upped the file "The Duel.mpg" in two parts that will need Winrar. Here's the two links. Use WinRar to extract the .mpg

Hey Adywan,

I’m aware of how many comments, ideas, etc. people offer you on a regular basis regarding your edit, and I feel kind of bad adding to the list, but I was watching the 2004 DVD of ANH last night and I noticed some things which I don’t think have been addressed yet in this thread. Below I’ve noted some errors/inconsistencies that you might want to consider. I apologize in advance for mentioning anything that you might have already addressed.

ERRORS & INCONSISTENCIES:
- In the scene where Vader is choking the Rebel, the placement of the stormtrooper’s legs in the background is inconsistent
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/245/pic02zm4.jpg

- In the scene where Leia is stunned, one of the stormtroopers is missing the “hash marks” on the sides of his ventilators… can these be added?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/9554/pic03tk5.jpg

- In the scene where Aunt Beru asks Luke to get a droid that speaks Bocce, there are some bushes that appear inconsistently between scenes
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/1603/pic04ia8.jpg

- After Uncle Owen decides to purchase C-3PO, there is a wire visible behind 3PO’s neck… can it be erased?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/8769/pic05cj9.jpg

- When Luke is eating with his aunt and uncle, Luke lowers his glass in one shot, then lowers it again in the following shot. Trimming a few frames after the cut should fix this and not interfere with Luke’s lines
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2121/pic06pk5.jpg

- When Luke is eating with his aunt and uncle, it’s daytime in the background, but in the following scene when Luke goes outside it’s sunset. Can you play with the light level in the background of the eating scene to match the binary sunset scene?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/3324/pic07kt5.jpg

- C-3PO’s eyes are blue for a moment when Luke surprises him in the garage
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/6050/pic08oh2.jpg

- When Luke and company enter docking bay 94, we see R2 climbing down the stairs as the camera pans right, then seconds later we see him join Luke and Ben. Given how fast R2 is descending the stairs, this would be impossible. Any possibility of fixing this scene by either erasing R2’s head toward the end of the shot? Or possibly by making R2 tackle the stairs like he did in AOTC?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/904/pic11wj8.jpg

- As the Falcon escapes Tatooine, we see someone walking away in the corridor, yet everyone besides Chewie and Han are seen buckling themselves in moments earlier in the cargo hold. Can this person be removed?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2831/pic12gz3.jpg

- Since you’ve changed the graphics for the Death Star when R2-D2 is plugged in, will you also be changing the Death Star graphics shown in the briefing room? (I was thinking you could use the AOTC graphics first, then keep the existing FX and just change the colour to red, like this:
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/359/pic16gx1.jpg

- The numbers on the Death Star’s countdown should be changed to Aurabesh (as you did with Luke’s macrobinoculars) for consistency
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/1323/pic18vf1.jpg

- Every time we see the numbers on the targeting computers in the X-wings, they should be changed to Aurabesh for consistency
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2789/pic19hq6.jpg

OTHER CHANGES TO THINK ABOUT:
- I’m not sure if this will be addressed during the colour correction, but I think the pink flashes during all shootouts in the movie (especially on the Tantive IV) should be more red than pink
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/1567/pic01ml9.jpg

- Have you thought about changing Ben’s krayt dragon scream (when he scares off the Sand People) back to the original sound effect? Or perhaps using an entirely different effect altogether (perhaps something from Jurassic Park)?

- Are you planning to edit out R2-D2’s “beep” just before Ben removes his hood and says “Hello there?” (the sound effect was not present in earlier versions of ANH; it occurs at 00:30:05)

- The Duros’ hands in the cantina are mismatched (one has human-sized hands in white gloves, the other bare hands with much longer fingers). Any possibility of making their hands consistent?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/3672/pic09dx7.jpg

- I know you changed the background behind R2’s head in a certain scene as it looked like the background on the Death Star (I believe it’s the scene immediately following the Falcon’s fight with the TIEs, right after 3PO says, “I think I’m melting.”). If that’s the case, I just wanted to point out we see a similar background while R2 is playing “chess” with Chewie (at 00:59:53, 1:00:02, and 1:00:31). That being said, it MAY just be the panel on the Falcon… not sure.
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/5714/pic13kg2.jpg

- In the scene where Vader and Tarkin just find out Leia has lied to them about the Rebels’ secret base, Vader’s hands move but there’s no dialogue… think you might trim this scene and omit this?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2185/pic22pn7.jpg

- As Ben’s making his way to the tractor beam controls, we see a group of stormtroopers marching, but one’s armour on the arm is falling apart – can this be fixed?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/823/pic14ct0.jpg

- Since you’re changing the blue Rebel insignia on the pilots’ helmets in the hangar, will you be changing them to red in the briefing room as well?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/5188/pic17oh4.jpg

- The explosion of one of the X-wings is pinkish in parts instead of orangish/yellowish; not sure if this will be addressed along with the rest of the colour correction
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/6552/pic20lo6.jpg

- Just a thought… give Chewie a medal during the closing ceremony? (Although I’m not sure there’s sufficient time during the scene in which Leia could actually give him the medal)
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/627/pic21mv5.jpg

CONFIRMATIONS:
- Did you edit out the scene where the floater droid laughs at and is knocked down by the ASP droid upon entry to Mos Eisley?

- Did you drop the shot of Walrusman’s severed arm in the cantina? I understand some think this scene goes against the idea of lightsabers cauterizing injuries, but I always liked it. If you decided to keep it, you could try cleaning up the bloody floor and make the wound look as though it’s still smoking a bit. You could also try replacing the hand on the arm to match the “flipper-like” hand we see earlier. I’ve done a quick example to show you what I had in mind

The original flipper-like hand seen here:
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/3713/pic10oy1.jpg
How the shot could be altered to look:
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/7348/pic10ajq0.jpg

- Ben’s saber is purple in a few shots during the duel. I know you fixed the sabers in the entire second half of the duel, but I wasn’t sure about the earlier half, so I figured I’d mention it
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/9981/pic15su9.jpg

I hope some of these suggestions/comments help. Again, I think the work you’ve done so far is nothing short of amazing. I can’t wait to see this edit!

Already fixed
In the scene where Leia is stunned, one of the stormtroopers is missing the “hash marks” on the sides of his ventilators… can these be added?
I've no plans to address this issue. maybe its just a different uniform stock.
In the scene where Aunt Beru asks Luke to get a droid that speaks Bocce, there are some bushes that appear inconsistently between scenes
I wan't going to do this but if i have enough time i might give it a go.
After Uncle Owen decides to purchase C-3PO, there is a wire visible behind 3PO’s neck… can it be erased?
Again, already fixed
When Luke is eating with his aunt and uncle, Luke lowers his glass in one shot, then lowers it again in the following shot. Trimming a few frames after the cut should fix this and not interfere with Luke’s lines
Trimming the frames just won't work. luke's hand & glass would still be in view when his lines start
When Luke is eating with his aunt and uncle, it’s daytime in the background, but in the following scene when Luke goes outside it’s sunset. Can you play with the light level in the background of the eating scene to match the binary sunset scene?
I've brightened the sunset scene and slightly darkened the background of the eating scene.
C-3PO’s eyes are blue for a moment when Luke surprises him in the garage
this whole shot has been fixed. The colours are totally messed up so i have redone the shot to fix all the issues
When Luke and company enter docking bay 94, we see R2 climbing down the stairs as the camera pans right, then seconds later we see him join Luke and Ben. Given how fast R2 is descending the stairs, this would be impossible. Any possibility of fixing this scene by either erasing R2’s head toward the end of the shot? Or possibly by making R2 tackle the stairs like he did in AOTC?
i was thinking about having R2 do this but it just didn't work so i have left it as it is for now.
As the Falcon escapes Tatooine, we see someone walking away in the corridor, yet everyone besides Chewie and Han are seen buckling themselves in moments earlier in the cargo hold. Can this person be removed?
Again, already fixed
Since you’ve changed the graphics for the Death Star when R2-D2 is plugged in, will you also be changing the Death Star graphics shown in the briefing room? (I was thinking you could use the AOTC graphics first, then keep the existing FX and just change the colour to red.
Yes i will be using the original graphics for most of the schematics and recolouring them to red.
The numbers on the Death Star’s countdown should be changed to Aurabesh (as you did with Luke’s macrobinoculars) for consistency I'm planning on chaning the complete diplay for this anyway.
Every time we see the numbers on the targeting computers in the X-wings, they should be changed to Aurabesh for consistency
Doing this too
OTHER CHANGES TO THINK ABOUT:
- I’m not sure if this will be addressed during the colour correction, but I think the pink flashes during all shootouts in the movie (especially on the Tantive IV) should be more red than pink

All the flashes have been recoloured. they are now white. i think these were originally changed to pink due to epilepsy issues with the lighter flashes, but i could be wrong.
Have you thought about changing Ben’s krayt dragon scream (when he scares off the Sand People) back to the original sound effect? Or perhaps using an entirely different effect altogether (perhaps something from Jurassic Park)?

yes i will be changing the scream for this. I really hate the new one (even though it was there in the original effect). It just sound lame to me and not scary at all.
Are you planning to edit out R2-D2’s “beep” just before Ben removes his hood and says “Hello there?” (the sound effect was not present in earlier versions of ANH; it occurs at 00:30:05)

no plans to do this.
The Duros’ hands in the cantina are mismatched (one has human-sized hands in white gloves, the other bare hands with much longer fingers). Any possibility of making their hands consistent?

No plans to do this either
I know you changed the background behind R2’s head in a certain scene as it looked like the background on the Death Star (I believe it’s the scene immediately following the Falcon’s fight with the TIEs, right after 3PO says, “I think I’m melting.”). Already fixed all of those shots
In the scene where Vader and Tarkin just find out Leia has lied to them about the Rebels’ secret base, Vader’s hands move but there’s no dialogue… think you might trim this scene and omit this?

One of the first things i fixed
As Ben’s making his way to the tractor beam controls, we see a group of stormtroopers marching, but one’s armour on the arm is falling apart – can this be fixed?

No plans for this either.
Since you’re changing the blue Rebel insignia on the pilots’ helmets in the hangar, will you be changing them to red in the briefing room as well?

yes i've done this
The explosion of one of the X-wings is pinkish in parts instead of orangish/yellowish; not sure if this will be addressed along with the rest of the colour correction

haven't got this far yet so i'm still unsure what i will be doing with these shots
Just a thought… give Chewie a medal during the closing ceremony? (Although I’m not sure there’s sufficient time during the scene in which Leia could actually give him the medal)

This was covered a while back in the tread. yes, Chewie is getting a medal.
CONFIRMATIONS:
- Did you edit out the scene where the floater droid laughs at and is knocked down by the ASP droid upon entry to Mos Eisley?

Its been changed slightly and only the worker droid remains now.
Did you drop the shot of Walrusman’s severed arm in the cantina? I understand some think this scene goes against the idea of lightsabers cauterizing injuries, but I always liked it. If you decided to keep it, you could try cleaning up the bloody floor and make the wound look as though it’s still smoking a bit. You could also try replacing the hand on the arm to match the “flipper-like” hand we see earlier. I’ve done a quick example to show you what I had in mind

I haven't dropped this shot. i have built a new "flipper" hand and i will be finishing this shot later next week. No more blood
Ben’s saber is purple in a few shots during the duel. I know you fixed the sabers in the entire second half of the duel, but I wasn’t sure about the earlier half, so I figured I’d mention it

All the saber shots have been re-rotoscoped so no miscoloured sabers remain.

Edited:

As per the post below, you are right of course. I wasn't thinking. Sorry about that.

It wasn't a FX test clip though, it was merely my take on the music situation. Nothing more.

Anyway, as you were.

I can't claim it's super-awesome, but I think it works pretty well. If anyone feels like giving it a look, let me know what you think of it. I'm still pretty new to the hands-on part of all this, so I'm still learning.

Here 'tis

Vader's saber had multiple color variations, and I'm not a big fan of the yellow flashes when ever the two sabers would make contact...other than that it was ok. Kind of hard to watch that fuzzy LD rip footage as well...

The mods always make the final judgments on stuff like this but maybe you could post your own work in your own thread? I know you didn't mean any harm but if lots of people did what you did pretty soon this wouldn't be Adywan's preservation effort thread, it would be a mess......

Wouldn't that be okay though? In the preceeding shot, the glass has only begun to be lowered. Not a big deal either way, I suppose.

I'm very happy to hear so many of these issues have been dealt with already. I'm especially anxious to see what you do with the Death Star screen of Yavin, as well as to see Chewie receive the medal at the end (sorry for not noting your comments on that earlier).

I think perhaps the most impressive thing you've done thus far is your ability to do this edit while simultaneously posting on these boards

I always ignore fan edits. ALWAYS. I think about these things the same as Neil S. Bulk, but after reading ALL 50+ pages of this thread I became interested in it and I decided to take a closer look. So I have downloaded yesterday the official trailer and the Vader-OB1 duell (all other links are dead) and I must say - WONDERFULL JOB !

But now the critics - there are two wrong things. The one is the planet before the Death Star in the trailer, it looks completely wrong, I don't know why, but simply it doesn't "feel right" there.

The second - the music during the Vader - Kenobi duel. It's terrible. Not the music, it's great like everything John Williams wrote, BUT ... it doesn't belong to the scene. It completely takes you away from the drama and completely RUINS the emotional balance of the scene. The music has absolutely nothing to do with the scene, it's the same as if you watch a movie, you're concetrating on it and your neighbour suddenly turns on the radio. The same ruining of the scene. When you're watching it, you concentrate on the music, and not on the action which is happening on the screen, and then you suddenly realise that Obi is dead.

The rest of your project looks VERY interesting .... Especially the starfield and the spaceships, MUCH better than the original or the special edition !

I have great confidence in your abilities, adywan, so I'm not too worried about this -- but I was just wondering how well the Death Star schematics in the briefing room will work with a blend of old and new. What I mean is this -- the new schematics you've had done for this edit look awesome -- will the old wireframe Atari-ish graphics (even though they will have been colored red) fit in with these more advanced new ones?

I haven't been posting very much recently, but I've been reading every post, and watching every clip. Beautiful, beautiful job, my friend. You should have seen me while I was watching your newest clip for the first (and second, and third) time. I was so excited by how beautiful everything looked!

Take care,

Adywan, can you tell us how much of the film you've completed? 50%? 80%?

I know we'll never nail down a release date, but it would be nice to know how close we are.

I'd say about 80% of the video work & 60% of the new audio mix is complete. I really can't give a definite release date at the moment because the work on the Death Star battle is probably the hardest part of the movie to do.

Actually they fit in pretty well. I haven't finished this sequence yet but things are looking good.

Adywan:

I've been reading this thread for a while now and finally decided to join the forum and throw in my two cents.

The work you've done is fantastic, and I have a couple questions/comments...

The use of Battle of the Heroes in New Hope is great, but I'm wondering if you might consider starting the duel with Duel of the Fates? Similar to the way the duel in The Phantom Menace starts?

And can you fix the hologram chess table when Luke gets up to go help Han in the tie fighter attack? When Luke gets up, the table wobbles like a cheap prop.

Anyway, keep going. Everything looks great thus far!

And PS...

I'm in the US, so can you please make an NTSC version as soon as you can? And please make sure the speed is correct. I have a PAL DVD that was supposedly NTSC converted and it runs much faster than normal and the voices sound sped up like chipmunks.

My gratitude for all the hours and attention you've put into this.

Also, doesn't the cup switch hands here making it even harder to fix?

Just matte in this background that I have prepared (at no small expense!) and the scene will fix itself. I'm totally getting a spot in the credits for this brilliant bit of technical innovation

Sorry Adywan, the PIC was a low rez screenshot from the game Rogue Squadron 3 Rebel strike. Not as cool as I remembered. Darn, I would of loved to see what you could have done with it.

Anyway. That part in the Yavin battle where the x-wings first fly into the trench, The DS seems to be a painting at first but then there's a flash from the turret, and it's all of a sudden a miniature set. It happens twice in the film. I know you are probably aware of this already, and I want to know if it can be fixed?

hey, no probs about the pic.

I've been looking into fixing this issue but so far i haven't found a solution.

Sluggo, love the background you prepared. it would have saved me a lot of work on this edit

A true NTSC version will be available after the PAL version is finished. Also i won't be fixing the wobbly hologram table. I just don't think that its necessary.

Now i'm really hoping someone can help me with a couple of problems i have:

Firstly i desperately need some clean landspeeder sound effects. Because i've edited the mos eisley scene the music no longer fits but i will have to build the FX track from scratch. I have a pretty good library of star wars effects but the one thing thats missing are any landspeeder Fx. I really hope someon can help me with this cuz i'm pretty stuck.

Secondly i need someone who has a 5.1 cinema system to help me out. My system has just packed up and i cannot test the audio track until this gets fixed. If i post a section of the movie that can be burned straight onto DVD, could someone test it through their system to see if the levels are correct? At the moment i am working with some high quality true 5.1 headphones, and in the past the mixes have been true to what i am hearing through the headphones but its still not the same thing as hearing it on a proper system. It will probably be the first section of the movie from the opening 20th century fox logo to the opening of the Tantive IV corridor battle and will be a few hundred MB in size.

If anyone can help with these matter then just let me know.

Thanks
