To all the people complaining about how loud the music is. Adywan has stated that it is a **temporary** soundtrack!!!! Does it make any sense to complain or even comment about something that was just put there to fill a gap for now?

I think what frendon meant (and what I meant) when commenting on how loud it was wasn't the actual volume of the music. I certainly understand that this is a temporary track and the score will change. I think the music is loud in the sense that there is a lot of stuff going on - instruments, strings and horns, along with a choir. As frendon said:

I would like it if it were just an instrumental version and a little more subtle

But as said before, there is no instrumental and subtle version of this that would really fit there. I do like it the way Adywan has it, but if there were a way to get what frendon said, I think it would work as well.

Keep in mind those of us who do offer constructive comments/criticism are only doing so to help Adywan with the final edit. We're all amazed at the quality stuff he's been showing, but its always good to have feedback.... as long as the feedback is well thought out and respectful. Ultimately it is Adywan edit but that doesn't mean shouldn't give our impressions

I imagine we wouldn't have midiclorians or "Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" if Uncle George surrounded himself with people who challenged some of his ideas.

Well, first I don't think anyone is complaining at least I'm not, we are offering our opinions, which is I think the whole point of this thread, to offer criticism, in the end it really comes down to what the author of the edit thinks it's best for his version, and I think we can all respect his final decisions. Second, I'm not refering to loudness per se, read InvaderTim's post, he got what I was trying to say.
I wish I had a Kryptonite cross, because then you could keep both Dracula AND Superman away.

I really loved the latest offering Adywan. To me it was a welcome improvement over the original. I really do love the added atmosphere the music adds to the duel, and the visual FX are incredible. I've always hated the falcons targeting comuters because they look like something from a Atari 2600, yet with the multiple targets it makes it look old tech, yet feasibly functional.

But the one thing that has always bugged me is where just before 3CPO says the line "come on R2 were going" the previously in-focus Falcon image in the background seems to stretch out and blur, as if to shift focus or something, but it looks really uneasy on the eye when your looking for it. I know this is a problem from the original cut, but im just wondering if the top half of the image before distortion takes place can be held through the remaining frames to keep the Falcon in focus there at all?

I checked the link in the Ranch thread and it's dead. Sorry.

Personally, I think you should send your movie to LFL. It might make them open their eyes a little bit to what should be done in the so called "Ultimate Box Set." Keep up the good work.

By the way, I'm subscribed to you on Youtube. Would you be able to send your finished product to me on there, or would I have to purchase it on a different download sight?

I noticed those starry backgrounds seem to wizz by very unnaturally as well, first time I'd noticed it. and all the stars seem to be at the same magnitude. Ah well 70's SFX for ya!

The person who uploaded the trailer to YouTube is nothing to do with me. Originally they uploaded it claiming to be me but have since retracated this claim and given me credit. there will be no purchase involved in this edit . it will be available freely through bittorrent, Usenet & PIF. I totally disagree with anyone selling their edits.

I'm still looking for this. Unfortunately, I have tons of DVDs full of crap, and when I label them, I put things like "Star Wars Stuff" on it thinking "Oh yeah, i'll remember what i mean by this."

well everyone else has had their tuppence worth. so here's mine.

a) overall quality, very good. what's done is nicely done

love the starfield replacement in the gunwells to match their position in the falcon and the ships relative movement. neat touch. and the overall starfield replacement gives the duel a lot more dynamic feeling of movement and speed even though they are static sets.

b) crits

i) when ben is cut down, I see you've subtly changed it so that we see his lightsaber and his hands (nice touch) falls away, away from camera, ie to ben's right. but off course, if I'm being really picky that then creates a continuity error because when ben's cloak collapses to the floor, the lightsaber falls on top of it.

why not have his hands and saber fall to our right, ie back towards him for that brief second, not creating that discontinuity.

ii) when the falcon pivots and accelerates away there is a slight jerk between your change and the original shot on the position of the falcon.

iii) when you see Han saying he's going to warm up the guns etc. I know you've changed the starfield, but I'd advise changing the pan so that it's not going so fast.

the original shot has a slight top left to bottom right movement going on. no problem. yours is a top right to bottom left. again no issue with that, it creates a bridge of continuity to the panning shot of the falcon afterwards. HOWEVER, and this is the point. if you have the falcon moving so fast in a climbing turn, we should have seen them do a 180 back to the death star by now. I'd just personally tone down the amount of pan in the starfield at that point.

iv) this is how picky I am.

the first dive on the falcon by the tie's time index 1.29.26.17

if you look REALLY closely, you will see that the topside quad mount on the falcon is putting backwards, ie towards this tie.

but you've got it firing forwards.

this is one of the most iconic shots in the original film and while I appluad the changes to it that you've made for their quality, I think you've made it too busy. personally, I'd ditch the other two attacking tie's and the only change I would make would be to have the guns on the falcon firing at this tie.

v) I think I'll be in the minority on this one.

the targetting computer readouts. hate hate hate the TIE targetting icons. love the rest, hate them. for me, this is a targetting display, and I think this is my military background coming out here, but having the readout display actual TIE's is a bit of a misnomer, a targetting package is there to give you target cues, not display the actual shape of the target. while the rest of it is perfectly fine. I'd personally ditch the TIE icon and put a chevron back in.

vi) I see what you've done to accomodate the new shot of the falcon being hit, you've moved the r2 and 3po corridor walk around. neat, clever manipulation of existing material

vii) one or two of the shots where you have TIE's flying past the front windows of the cockpit, I'd eliminate the laser bolts on at least one of those shots. reason? the problem here is one of repetition and angle. their point of origin is the exact same place, ie the upper dorsal turret position. they originate from the same place, and track in the same direction, makes the shot feel samey even if it isn't. I'd just mix it up a bit and one of the middle shots, drop falcon fire from it. stops it becoming repetitive.

on a personal level, I don't agree with every change, but the quality of what is there is stunning and I'm sure there are changes of mine you don't necessarily agree with either.

regards music etc, I'm just not sold on the new music for this section, but then, I'm not intending to edit the first three films as well.

I totally understand the need for that music for your version as that is the last climatic showdown between kenobi and anakin and the audience when watching the films in order will know that. hence the music is necessary.

Maybe the targetting display is advanced enough to show whatever craft you are targetting in its actual form on the display. I like this change, but respect your reasons for hating it. Also, I like that this battle is chaotic and not so stiff. Now I feel like they are really threatened ,because ties are comming from everywhere. Remember that Tarking wanted it to appear as if they had fought there way to freedom so that they wouldn't suspect that the Falcon was being tracked. Also, now that there is more danger it adds more humor and meaning to Leia's line "that is the only explination for the ease of our escape" and Han's line in return " Easy? You call that easy!".

That's not a problem at all. It's called a "rack focus". You're supposed to pay attention to the in focus stormtroopers running from the Falcon first, then Threepio. Note that Threepio is out of focus in the top shot but in focus at the bottom.

Neil

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

Author

damn, neil, you beat me to it.

yup, that's a focus shot. the emphasis is on the background first to show the stormtroopers running away and then it switches to the foreground when 3po speaks. what doesn't help the minor distorition on the pull back is that the camera moves slightly causing it to visually warp as it does so. I can understand your urgh moment, but I wouldn't even want to fix that.

Yeah I agree I wouldn't "fix" the rack focus from the Flacon to 3PO, it was shot that way on purpose and for a legitimate creative reason.

I agree with the poster who said that some of the shots of gunfire between the TIEs and the Falcon feel a bit busy - Adywan, this is primarily what I meant when I was talking about "doing something because you can." I think it's great to have a little bit more back and forth gunfire, but I also found it distracting in that first shot through the window of the TIE. There is a nice rythym and pace to that shot... we stare at the Falcon coming into targeting range... there is a moment of suspense... then BAM the bad guys fire and we're under attack. Having the Falcon firing right from the start really does distract from one of the best shots in the film. I say let the TIEs fire first and then all hell can break loose (which is another point - it's important to let things build up momentum - any battle scene should generally start out small and get bigger - so saving shots of chaotic cross fire for later will have more impact if you SAVE it for later!)

So, here I am saying that just because you CAN make the Falcon fire back in more shots doesn't mean you should in EVERY shot.

I agree, the moving starfields are great and increase the tension and feel of action.

As far as the readouts go, I do admit the first time I saw them they did feel a bit too "perfect." Even today, despite them being far more advanced, movies still often tend to make computer readouts look "computery" because that's what people excpect and, frankly, I think it looks cooler - especially on the Falcon, where Han has put his money into making the ship fast - I'd bet a fancy targeting readout is the last thing he would spend money on.

Changing the TIEs to simple markers is a good idea, and I would personally alter the frame rate on the displays to twos (i.e. 12 FPS) so they look a little choppier and low-tech. Just dropping the frame rate and ditching any motion blur (if you're using it) would make the displays look a lot less "perfect."

Remember, Lucas made a conscious effort to have the Empire's gear new and high tech, while the rebels and much of the rest of the Star Wars universe was very "used" and beat up.

Anyway, great work and I can't wait to see it finished.

Having watched a second time, I think both the busyness and the TIEs on the readouts both look great and are appropriate. What I always hoped to see more of is the stuff that I always loved from RotJ, and that's the external shots of the ships swooping around firing at each other, and that's something that does come across as a bit lacking now, purely I think because modern audiences expect that sort of thing.

Incidentally, on the shot where Han says "we're coming up on their sentry ships", it might be nice to see a star destroyer off in the background - those TIEs otherwise seem to come from nowhere.

---

If I were doing this scene again (and I'm not), I'd be tempted to draw out the battle a little longer and make it look as if the Falcon is taking heavier damage - maybe it's just me but there's no real sense of "threat" in this scene now (nor was there before). It would be nice to see some new ext. shots of the Falcon getting shot at and those shots doing some real damage (little explosions coming off the points where they hit, others getting absorbed the shield, adding some camera-rocking effects into some of the internal shots). Like I say, I'm not doing this scene, and I think the improvements that you've made, adywan, are immeasurable.

I agree with this post a lot.... also some fake CRT scanlines might help to lower the tech level as well.

I agree. the busyness of the TIE's surrounding the Falcon add more intensity to the scene. It is more fast paced, and more fun to watch than the original.
Personally, if you made the TIE attack scene this good I can't wait to see the intensity and drama you have made to the final Yavin battle.

Adywan has added at least 2 wide shots that show the TIEs firing on the Falcon. They're short, but they're there.

Incidentally, on the shot where Han says "we're coming up on their sentry ships", it might be nice to see a star destroyer off in the background - those TIEs otherwise seem to come from nowhere.

I've always thought that the TIEs ARE the sentry ships.

Again the wide shots show the Falcon getting shot at and taking damage. We see an explosion before they lose the "lateral controls". If you haven't seen the original version in a while, you might want to re-watch it to see just how much Adywan has really added.

One thing i have never done is add something in "Just because I can". This scene was actually carefully thought out before i started any FX work. The shot you are talking about, from the TIE cockpit view, had the falcon guns firing back because originally it just seemed to be sitting there letting the TIE fire at it without any retaliation, then next shot they are suddenly firing back. Surely they would have started firing at the TIE's the moment they started attacking the Falcon. It's not as if they were caught by surprise.

Here i think that the Falcon would have had a better targeting display. Having a simple cursor for ship identification would be terrible for a targeting computer display especially in battle where different types of ships would be involved. How the hell would they know which ship they are firing upon or what is approaching them? having a simple wireframe marker that identifies a ship would be a more logical display and for that reason i added the TIE displays.

My mistake there. the saber actually falls towards Ben but the saber blade layer was set behind the cloak instead of above it and this gave the impression that it falls to the right. I've now corrected this.

An immediate acceleration wouldn't necessarily be a smooth transition so there would be a slight jerk. I can't actually see what you mean with this shot though. It doesn't look jerky to me.
