Well here's a few more screenshots as promised. I've almost finished this sequence and i will post the whole sequence in .avi format hopefully within the next week so it'll give you a good idea of the amount of fixing being done. But first a few shots from the sequence to wet your appetite.

Yes, I am doing the whole saga. There may well be a variation of what you mentioned about Vader thinking about Padme in Jedi, but thats a long way off yet. I haven't really planned much about that edit.

I think you shouldn't add the whole "Vader still loves/longs for Amidala" angle to your edit. The reason why is strictly a personal point of view but in my opinion the whole turning to the dark side because he loved her soooo much that he would do anything... it completey destroyed the whole character arc for Vade in the orginal trilogy. That arc culminates in Jedi when Vader decides to save Luke.... why?.... because he loved his son.... so let's see Vader turned to the dark side because he loved his wife.... and he came back to the light side because he loved his son... so the morale of the whole story is... who the hell knows.


Now I was one those folks who reserved judgement on the prequel trilogy until I saw all three and now that I have --I can honestly say .....

Well it is a point to be debated obviously, but as adywan said, it's a long way off, besides if it's left the way it is, it's confusing, as you demonstrated dumb_kid, if Luke is simply a reminder of Padme and that allows his epiphany, things make more since.

Adywan, great shots, didn't even know you were changing the R2 landscape, brilliant idea, beautiful work!

As Adywan says; any ROTJ edit that he might attempt is a long way off. However, looking over this thread again at all the small fixes you've made (or are planning to make) and the newly posted color correction shots... I can't wait for this. I know it sounds cliche but that's how I feel. I think it's great that there's still a great deal of effort going into fan edits/reworks/overhauls of the OT Star Wars films even with all the different versions out there already. Keep up the great work - I'm looking forward to downloading a test sequence.

Ah, now here I have to call shenanigans Flopped shots are a good thing. In this case it maintains continuity of direction, which I think is more important that continuity of oil stain. The first shows 3PO looking the left, and so does the second. If you switch them around, it'll create a discontinuity - perhaps not something everyone will notice, but that's why the shot of 3PO was flopped all those years ago.

Actually with this scene he still looks in the correct direction. Removing the Dragon skeleton has created a different camera angle so it still maintains directional continuity. Not only was the original shot flipped but if you look closely at the Dragons skull you can see that the 2 flip shots were filmed from the opposite side of the dune, which is probably the reason why it was flipped in the first place.

Loving the color correction, Adywan! Looks fantastic!

And the idea to animate a sandcrawler in instead of that awkward reflecting thing in the distance is purely brilliant. That's something that's bugged me for years!

The new landscape is still a work in progress and may not make it into the final edit unless i can get it looking exactly right. As for the sky being different every shot, well the shots i posted are from different sections and angles so it will look different. You'l see that the cloud formations stay uniform once you see the entire clip. Plus i've still got a little colour tweaking on the sky colour to do.

I got to say that the Sandcrawler idea is brilliant. This is going to be sweet!

However, all of the action on that still is on the left side of the frame. I don't know if you can do anything about that.

Looks like you colored in the horrible blue escape pod door thingy...much better! Sky is nice too!
New Landscape as R2 leaves 3PO...I very much like this idea...just a little too much in the background...my opinion.

Yeh, the sandcrawler is taken from the OUT and i agree that theres too much in the background as R2 leaves 3PO. Needs redoing.
The sequence I'm going to post is from Vader confronting Leia right up to the R2 canyon scene.

The trick is to do multiple morphs - one for an arm, one for a head, one for a leg, etc, then blend them together later. That way you avoid the "tearing" that occurs when you have shapes too close to each other.

7 & 9: Death Star surface model: Yeh, that does look pretty crappy and kinda amateurish comparted to the rest of the effects. I'll see what i can do.

8 & 10: Explosions: these will be enhanced and, maybe in a couple of cases, will be newly composited explosion effects

11: Bad blue screen: Already fixed

12: R2 hit: It has been enhanced, but i'm still tweaking it

13: Hero's reunite: Not too sure about this one. Maybe adding some more background noise of celebrations, but not too sure if it needs any music. I think its pretty much better not to have any music after the Death Star explodes and that way the Throne room theme becomes more memorable when it kicks in.

14: Chewie: yes, Chewie WILL be getting his medal. It only took 30 years, but he will now finally have one.

I'll be posting a few more screenshots in the next few days of a few things that have been fixed or tweaked and these shots will have the new colour correction applied because that part of the edit is a few shots away from being complete.

I've been snagging some SW comics, and I came across this and thought of this project:

This is from a comic called "Vader's Quest", it's the ramp people were talking about a page or two ago. I thought it was interesting because the artist "fixed" the ramp so it is cemented to the stairs like SomethingStarWarsRelated had said.

Hi,

Just dropped by to say you're doing a terrific job. This looks really great.

I also have a suggestion to make about something that's been bothering me for a long time. When the falcon is dragged inside the Death Star hangar, and Vader approaches the ramp with two stormtroopers reporting that they've found nothing inside, he says the line "I sense something; a presence I've not felt since... " and then leaves.

My problem is that he leaves the scene practically while saying "since...", as if he doesn't pause a sec to think about this presence as the way James Earl Jones delivers the line suggests he would.

In brief, would it be possible to better match this line with Vader's body language at that time?

Ok, here's the sample i promised. The colours & a couple of the enhanced effects shots still need tweaking (saturation & flesh tones) but its almost there. It's an XVID file, just under 5 minutes long and has a 5.1 AC3 audio track. The audio track is almost complete for this section so i decided to give you a taste of what is to come. I chose this segment because its one of the best to show what levels of enhancement i will be giving this release.

Some (among the many & apart from colour) of the tweaks that i have done to this segment:

Interior of the escape pod is now a uniform colour throughout the various shots and no longer changes from blue to brown
R2's arm now retracts after pressing the button to open the door to fix a minor continuity issue
Enhanced escape pod blast off
New starfield & escape pod trajectory in the shot where the imperial officer says "hold your fire..."
New stardestroyer & starfiled as 3P0 & R2 look out of the pod window. The stardestroyer now receeds more natural
Complete new effects shot of the escape pod heading towards Tatooine
Vaders chest plate now lights up
Vaders eyes are now no longer red in any shot
Enhanced effect shot of the stardestroyer as it wipes to the driods on Tatooine
New sky on Tatooine
new background as R2 leaves 3PO
flip shot of 3PO as he stands by the skeleton fixed
New animated sandcrawler
new R2 in the canyon matte

Like i said, this isn't exactly what the finished movie will look or sound like, but its close.

hi adywan it's been a long time without update, well it's good to have some news :

Interior of the escape pod is now a uniform colour throughout the various shots and no longer changes from blue to brown :

theses shots are really good.
