STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION — Page 136

The other thing that I felt should have been addressed but was never talked about is the "looping" of the tusken raider, when originally filmed the editors only had footage of the tusken raider raising his gaffi stick after attacking Luke so they looped the footage they had back and forth to make it look like he was raising it up and down, this effect has always bugged me and has never been addressed, it would be nice to somehow ease it up to make it look natural, I know it might be too late for that however and if it is impossible to fix it for the DVD then disregard my comment entirely.

Ady, is this possible? Yes, no?

No-one here has demanded anything of Ady, nor has there been any whining. As far as I can tell its been quite an in depth discussion, with nothing malicious or whiny about it. In fact Ady asked everyone's thoughts on that particular shot - which everyone gave in a civilised manner.

Come to think of it this is one of the most pleasant forums I visit - many others would have descended into a flame war over this sort of thing..

Totally agree. I hope we can keep the good natured tone of this thread without it devolving into the typical SW bitchfest. I think we owe it to Ady for all the work he's done.

Remember Adywan: A giraffe is a horse designed by a committee.

This is your edit. It's you who've put in all the hours and labour, make the film how you want it.

Opinions and constructive criticism are fine and can be really helpful. But I've been watching this thread since it began and it would be a shame if you altered your own vision in order to please other people. If you were satisfied with the hand/flipper as it was, then leave it.

I haven't had a chance to watch the film yet, but I'm downloading it from Rapidshare as we speak.

How about we all just let Adywan decide on the flipper or hand . Whichever one he doesn't use I'm sure could be put in the extras of the DVD9.
Can someone PM me the Rapidshare link?

i didn't bother doing anything to the Tusken loop shot because it never bothered me for one but also there wasn't much that could be done with it. if i cut out the loop then the shot would be just too quick

as for the 3po reaction shot after R2 is hit during the trench run: all the control room shots were rearranged because so many flip shots were used and i wanted to bring some continuity back to those scenes. So unfortunately that meant that the reaction shots would be in a different place because the following shot Leia would be on the other side of 3P0 too soon. i also felt that it didn't need it because in the shot that follows now 3P0 looks like he has almost shut down through depression and looks really sad. originally I was going to add a new shot with 3P0 with some quick dialogue but i just couldn't find the right piece to use s i just left it out but i have since found something that might have worked so i may go back and do something with that.

Hey Ady,

I can't download this, but I just wanted to thank you for all the countless hours I know you've been putting into this. As was said earlier, the results of this clearly put you at the top of the game in special effects, and this movie would surely be a ticket into any visual effects house.

Not to beat a dead horse... but my vote would go to a severed HAND because it is more dramatic.

All the best

I've never noticed the looped Tusken Raider shot either, and when I learned of it a long time ago, it was just an example of the original brilliant editing done for ANH.

To the flipper debate: You should go with what you feel works like Pizza-the-Hut said (interesting I'm parroting someone whose screen name harkens from the same movie, no?). I feel that the flipper is a bit too unrecognizable as an appendage as is; the shot goes by too quickly to really understand that the orb-shaped thing was holding the blaster unless you know the original cut of the movie and are clued in to whose hand it was really supposed to be. Perhaps, if the flipper could be shaped to show individual fingers within the flipper, it would be more understandable (e.g., with one part of the flipper extended as the trigger finger in a loosened grasp pose).

Adywan,
The words just aren't available to adequately say how amazing this is. Just... wow.

I have a question that has nothing to do with the arm/flipper OR the introduction of the TIE squads!

After watching the re-edited Luke/Obi-Wan discussion, it flows so much better. It's very natural and you really don't notice just how disjointed the original is until now.

My question is, is it possible that the original story/screenplay was more along these lines but was edited to be disjointed? I say this because I watched the original scene again and, when R2 starts to show the Leia recording, C3PO reacts to it even though he previously says that he was shutting down.

In Ady's cut, it all flows perfectly so it's not an issue. Funnily enough, I didn't really notice it until watching Ady's cut because I thought that he made C3PO's head move for his version, but it's in the original cut.

Maybe it's been addressed in other forums or documentaries or edits, but I haven't heard about it before now. Just another thing that you notice for the first time, even after all these years...

This was indeed how the scene was originally shot (unless Adywan altered it some more), it was recut in two separate conversations for some reason... I believe it was to make the story move faster. But I too think it works better this way
I think it was restored for the first time in OCP's Deleted Magic, you may want to have a look at that one

And from the first page:
57 - Re-edited the whole “Ben’s Home” not only to fix the continuity errors but also because the conversation about the force and Luke's father is now all together and flows better instead of being split into 2 separate conversations. It now starts off with the viewing of the hologram and fixes the continuity problems.

I wouldn't be surprised if that scene was originally scripted or filmed in that order, that scene is one of my favorite parts of Ady's edit.

I could swear I read somewhere that the Kenobi's hut scene was more like Ady's cut originally. Maybe in the annotated screenplay?

^^ Since we're on the topic of the Ben/Luke scene - another issue resolved (I mentioned this earlier) is Obi Wan saying "your father wanted you to have this." It sounds less like an outright lie or continuity issue and more like Obi Wan putting his spin on things.

Ok, maybe part of my reaction to the TIE fighter squadron shot was a dark X-Vid, so I'll take another look. I do remember it pulled me out of the moment, though.

Tomorrow night I've having my inner-circle of Hollywood STAR WARS friends over to watch (two of them have written for Star Wars but I can't mention specifics).

I'm sure we'll have a discussion afterwards and I'll let you know what everyone thinks!

Ady's version of Ben's Hut is the way it was originally written and filmed. The reason they decided to restructure it, is because someone pointed out during one of the first screenings of the first cut that they get this urgent message from Leia, the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance, and then they sit back and decide to have a long chat. Luke tinkers with Threepio. Ben dusts off the lightsaber. Meanwhile people are dying.

That was why it was changed.

Personally, I can take the scene either way. I see the point they originally made, but Ady's version works too.

It wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. It's just funny that I never noticed before that 3PO moved, even though he was supposed to be shut down. I was sure that Ady did that. I thought "Wow, that's so cool! He made 3PO's head move, too!" Guess not!

Ady, if you didn't touch another thing, I would still call this the version to best all other versions and it will be the only one I watch from now on.

Edit: Interesting, InfoDroid. I guess I can understand that, but, seeing it as it is in Ady's cut, it doesn't really strike me that way. But it's just another interesting tidbit of information.

Ady tried to make Kenobi say "I wanted you to have it when you were old enough." but he wasn't satisfied with the result. Obi-Wan does say "I" a few times in the trilogy. But apparently I didn't work for Ady.

Ady also said he could not paint out the cords/battery pack up Luke's sleeve in that scene for some reason.

From the annotated screenplay (pages 37 & 38):

"Paul Hirsch: We called the scene 'Interior - Ben's Cave,' even though it didn't really look like a cave. In the original cut of the film Ben and Luke heard the whole message first, and then they talked about Luke's father and the sword. I looked at the scene, and I said, 'George, there's something wrong here; Leia's message basically says that the whole universe is about to blow out, and we have this long dialogue between Ben and Luke about something else right after it.' So I suggested that they have the talk first and then listen to the message, and we restructured the scene that way."

Activated my ability to receive PM. Whoever has the RS link, fire away.

BTW, Ady, my vote goes to the human hand.

I can see the flames now

"...Yeah, but we only got the Adywan special release on dvd, That's not how I remember the movie when i first sat down and watched the movie 6 weeks ago..."

I'm starting to watch the movie proper now and I'm pretty impressed so far.

In regards to vader slicing through the door I have to agree that it just wouldn't seem likely. Surely he'd be able to unlock the door or override the controls. And looking at the bigger picture, remember that they wanted to track the falcon to the secret rebel base so at that point he was better off to just let them leave, send a few ties out after them and play the waiting game.

in regards to the severed flipper I have to say that the human hand is really looking good. In my mind it makes more sense and it's easy for the audience to instantly tell what it is and what has just happened. Something that is less clear with a flipper or wolf claw. that said the new hoof mockup does look good too.

"or here's a very, very quick composite of the human arm ( and yes i know its the wrong hand but i can't take a photo of my right hand until the wife gets home.)"
- I guess it's a good way to put in a cameo?

Maybe the 2008 dvd9 WILL have a 'few new surprises'?

Wow, The tie squadron reveal = goosebumps. I can't wait to watch this with friends just to see the looks on their faces.

Now we'll get to have rival groups of Adywan fans..."purists" who believe that the xvid represents the true Star Wars film in all of its re-edited glory, while the "new-adys" will be of the opinion that the DVD release is an even more pure form, ironing out the flaws in the xvid...while the purists will believe that those are not flaws, but were instead intended by the divine hand of Adywan, who was later corrupted by the outside influence of intercessors...

There'll be a battle or some such shit before too long.

This was probably addressed earlier in the thread, but is it possible to order a DVD from you Ady? Because I can't seem to download it, and I want it soooo bad.

You are kick ass, Ady.

Ady, to add my voice to the chorus, you've really outdone yourself (and every single one of us, thusfar) on this project. It's simply spectacular. I really hope you have a job in the industry, because some of the work in here puts certain "pros" to shame.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.
