I know you're focusing more on the visuals right now, but I'm wondering (so I can be on the look out): are you thinking about adding in some PT sound fx to ANH?
I can't think of anything off hand...but maybe replace a few of the poor sound fx in ANH (maybe buttons and knobs-...maybe the lightsabers!

)...

I think one thing that really dates this films is the sound track...particularly the foley fx. They used so much of the on-set voices and not enough ADR...and the ADR has an odd EQ or something...like they recorded it in a tin can or something...

Just one more thing to think about!

I'm stripping the soundtrack down to just the dialogue track, equalising the dialogue and then building it back up to a better 5.1 mix with new effects to give a better surround experience. I have managed to get hold of a 7 disk Hollywood Foley library and i'm in the process of making up a star wars effects library. I really don't like the mix on the DVDs. Too much emphasis on sound effects, music cues you can hardly hear or have disappeared completely, and an overpowering subwoofer (bloody bad idea to let ben burtt do the final mix).

I think that by actually stripping down to the dialogue track and rebuilding a 5.1 soundtrack has just put this edit in a whole new league. I've seen plenty of reedits but actually remaking, and fixing the soundtrack is just amazing. I said it before man and I will say it again, this edit when it is completed may become the best fan edit of A New Hope on the web.

Now since we are discussing the soundtrack, will there be the possibility of an Imperial March music cue in the film?

When I read it, I thought he meant he was simply remixing what was already there in the mix.

So, adywan...just to wet our appetite...wanna throw out an idea you've had for a specific scene? -...besides the cantina

Again, I know you're not really focused on that right now...any little idea you've had will do!

Whoops! How did I miss this post?! Thanks for clarifing adywan! I think the way you're going about it is probably the best way to do it. Wow! I simply can't wait!

Just a quick update.
Things are going really well now. some sequences are now completed. the pics below are shots of some of the new fixes without any colour correction.

1. the cantina entrance. Fixed the shadow continuity problem in the shot when we first see the SE Dewback before they enter the cantina. the shadowing is now in the correct direction.
2. Princess leia stunned. When the stun blast hits Leia a part of her dress isn't illuminated with the rest of her. Fixed
3. Escape pod. I've completely recomposited the entire escape pod sequence. when its launched you can now see the stars. Changed the trajectory of the pod when the commander says "hold your fire" to match closer to how it should be. the view from inside the pod, I've fixed the problem with the stardestroyer and starfield receeding at the same rate and fixed the rotation to match that of the exterior shots.The shot of the pod heading towards the planet i have sped up the pod and you see it entering the atmosphere now. Also redone the atmosphere glow of Tatooine and added the twin suns
4. Darth vaders chest plate lights. Difficult to see really on a still pic but I've almost completed adding the flashing lights to his chest plate. Also in the sequence where vader strangles the rebel ther is a continuity error where the one stormtrooper in the background stands with legs apart but cuts to a shot of him with legs together, then back to one of them apart again. Thats been fixed
6. Opening sequence. Recomposited the entire sequence. Enhanced the starfield, Tatooine now rotates and has a more transparent horizon, Tantive IV's trajectory changed so it stays in shot longer and the stardestroyer no longer looks like its firing in the wrong direction, and when the stardestroyer engines come into frame i've removed the horrible blue glow that fills the screen and just added the glow to the engines only.

Really looking forward to this, more than receiving the original trilogy through the post, keep up the great work your doing.

Its a pity I couldn't download the Alderaan scene, as rapid share doesn't like me for some reason (it thinks I'm a bot or something).

I was hoping to get it finished by X-mas, but there's so much work left to do it is looking like early 2007 now.

Adywan,

This is looking better and better with every screenshot!

Question: Are you fixing the jump cut as R2 is being raised into the X-Wing as Luke is talking to Biggs and Red Leader?

Also, is it just my imagination that the escape pod looks a bit purple?

i'm trying to fix that but its proving really tricky, but i'm gonna give it my best shot.

Yeh it is. I was playing about with some filters and forgot to disable them before taking the screen shot. It will be the correct colour in the finished film.

The theme will be heard in various parts of the movie but, as i haven't really done much on the audio track yet, i couldn't give you specific details as yet, but one part that it will definately be heard is Vaders entrance aboard the Tantive IV. I've rough mixed that section and the theme fits in perfectly.

This project is looking awesomer and awesomer. While we are on the subject of the escape pod...
after it has landed on Tatooine, the hatch is open and apparently painted blue. I don't know if George was planning any bluescreen work with it, but it is just blue in the 2 scenes it is visable. Could you take a look at it and see if it deserves fixing?

Also, I am curious whether you are painting out tow cables that the crew pulled the droids with through the sand. The one that passes infront of Luke and 3PO during the night scene is really obvious.

SomethingStarWarsRelated, I like the idea of enhancing the Tantive IV four explosion scene. You're right that there it's mostly smoke and to me it has always seemed like too much. I think the size of the smoke plume gives away the fact that the ship is a model. What would be nice to see is some of that smoke removed and add a core explosion to it. If done right, the core explosion should show how bad a hit it was without ruining the effect. Adding a small amount of camera shake just as it hits would also be a great idea.

Adywan could do wonders for this scene.
