It's run by Gen Con who did a bad job for C3 which is what worries me.

You've never been abroad? Not even to Canada? You're missing out man. I guess I am kinda lucky. Bear in mind though that for me, travelling to France or Italy for example was only 2 hours on a plane, and not very expensive.

Anyway, I'm probably gonna get flamed for not talking about Star Wars Celebration, so I'll shut up.

I'll accept responsibility for the flaming in order to derail this thread for just a little while longer. I've always wanted to travel, but I just haven't been able to afford it. My family hasn't even taken a vacation anywhere in seven years. Fortunately, I was able to tag along on my girlfriend's family's vacation two years ago. But I'd really love to see the world, especially Japan, because I'm a geek.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Heh, that'll work. I'm returning your thread to you, convention-goers!

I always thought it would be cool to go to a SW convention - but never been. Maybe I'll try to hit this one. It would be interesting to see what the state of Star Wars will be at that point in time.

To many reasons to list here without a massive thread derailment. I was a volunteer at C3. The good thing about volunteering is that I was able to get INTO the convention early every morning (I heard about a lot of people being stuck outside in the line more than 2 hours after it opened). The bad thing about it was dealing with GenCon staff.

Just for example: It wasn't the convention itself that made C3 fun it was the fans. Okay the weather had a huge actor to the dissatisfaction. But GenCon totally blew it as far as organization was concerned. Where the fan club were supposed to get in early, they still had to wait hours to get in even after the doors opened. The lines for the official store were a joke and they frequently ran out of their daily alotments and in fact had to close early on some days. On the first day, my friend waited in line 5 hours before he finally got his stuff. Meanwhile while I and a couple others went in at the same time, they split the line when it opened and we were out of there in an hour and a half. There was allegedly a Fast pass system in place, in fact there was a booth for it. It didn't happen. Most of these exclusive products for CIII were available a week later on swshop.com.

The official CIII party was overpriced, and just plain silly. Long lines for activities and events were the norm there as well. You had to pay for that and for any foods at that party as well. There was a party for all the fan clubs, 501st, Rebel Legion, Fan Force. $35 bought you admission to a room that did not have enough seats, not enough food, and no organization. In fact the celebs that got invited went to the cooler private master replicas party which I attended.

And next year, unless you are a Hyperspace member, you can not go to Thursday's show since that is exclusive to the fan club. So if you are willing to schekel out another $39 for membership into Hyperspace, you are out of luck for an entire day of the con. yes Lucasfilm knows how to milk a franchise and a fanbase for all it's worth

Huh. Thats sound pretty shitty to me. Now I am having second thoughts about going.

The positive thing I see that GenCon has learned from their experience is taht the official store will be open 24 hours.

Also StarWarsShop.com's warehouse is in Torrance.

Is the main attraction to these celebrations the official store? What else is there to do there?

Is George going to show up for some Q & A ? Because I have a few Q's & A's for him!

I have questions for Lucas, and no doubt he has answers, but I have answers for his answers, and any younger fans at the convention might want to put those earmuffs on for my answers, because there might be a few f-bombs in there.

Have you ever noticed the similarities between Lucas fanboys and Scientologists? Both have their roots in alien folklore, and both refuse to hear any negative criticism, despite how ridiculous elements of both are.

Just a reminder: If anyone is even remotely interested in going to this, it's in your best interest to try and book hotel rooms now. You can always cancel your reservation if you change your mind, but it's better to have rooms reserved now than miss out completely later. My friends and I have already reserved rooms at the Figueroa Hotel, and Embassy Suites just in case. There are a ton of hotels in the convention center area.

Also, GenCon will be offering special room package rates online later this year. I'm not sure what exactly they are or how much they'll be, but I'm guessing they'll have information up on starwarscelebration.com as soon as it's available. Those will most likely sell out very fast, so don't miss out. Just for the record though, our hotel rates we booked ourselves at Celebration III were about the same price as the ones GenCon offered online.

The point I'm trying to make though is that you should at least be thinking about this now instead of three months before the con when you'll be lucky if you can find a hotel room within 20 miles of the convention center.

If anyone has any questions about the Celebration, feel free to post them here or PM me. I went to Celebration II and III (but somehow missed the first one which was held in my hometown).

Just thought I'd mention here that there will also be a Celebration Europe at Earl's Court in London. I don't think there are any confirmed dates yet, but it's going to be in July 2007.

I'm thinking about going, but I'd have to hook up with some other people to share room costs and such. And I don't think anyone I know is going at this point.

Zion, I looked up the Figueroa on Tripadvisor and it confirms what I know about that area of downtown LA. It's dangerous. The hotel itself got some scathing reviews. A step above it is the Confort Inn whre I bookes some rooms but the dangerous neighhood thing still applies. But just in case, I have reservations at Marriott Courtyard in Sherman Oaks. It's kinda far, but at least I know it will be a good hotel and I get the nice discount too.

Buy your tickets online for Celebration IV NOW!

According to the site, early registration is $110 for all 4 days. Fan Club members get in Thursday for free (non-FC members will not be admitted Thursday).

If you order between now and Thursday November 2, you will get an email Thursday morning (10AM PST) with details about discount hotel accomodations. Hotels close to the convention center that might say they are already booked for the dates of the con, such as the Figueroa, will have rooms available for those who order their C4 tickets online.

If anybody does this, let us know what hotel reservations you were able to get. I'll do the same.

You're better off with hotels a few blocks north in the prime downtown area. It's a BIG difference of skeeziness that a few blocks make. But, really, the convention center area with the Staples Center and the new L.A. Live center (that might be finished by then) is pretty safe. There's just sort of a no-man's land all around it ... and you don't want to head south or east. Much nicer hotels are a few blocks to the north, in the main downtown area of City Hall, the State and Federal Courts, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, etc. Ghost Town on the weekends, but perfectly comfortable and safe-feeling.

As an Angelino, I must tell you that downtown is one of the least interesting parts of our city. Bleh.

I'm still not positive I'm going to the convention, but with it being in L.A. - I guess I'll find it hard to resist.

I'm just glad it's in LA this time. I'll probably go for at least 1 day. I thought about getting the 4 day pass, but $110 is a little expensive for something I don't enjoy nearly as much as I use to.

I might change my mind, but somehow I doubt it.

I'll probably go for one day if I'm in LA at the time, but I won't make a special trip. Now if it was originaltrilogy.com Celebration I, on the other hand...

So you pay 110 dollars for a 4 day event and aren't allowed in one of those days? Maybe I missed the post, but are you allowed to purchase your way in by getting a Fan Club membership on the day?

I wish I could go but I live across the continent (and in another country to boot) and I probably couldn't get enough friends interested in this to drop that dough for tickets AND airfare/hotel etc.....but did I read that right though? pay for 4 days, get in for 3 (if you aren't a FC member) then pay extra for admittance on the 4th on the day? BULLSHIT.
