SOLO - A subtler remaster of 'The Bold One' (unfinished)

Now that the mods have moved this to the preservation section, I’m probably going to have to take it a lot more seriously!

So, now that I have finally gotten a hold of the Reddit Solo - A Star Wars Story regrade project, ‘The Bold One’ by user 12ParsecsRoundedDown, progress on this has sped up significantly. I own a legitimately purchased copy of the original film, so don’t even go down that rabbit hole.

This is intended to be a much subtler regrade using ‘The Bold One’ as a base.

Broom Kid explains it best:

If the Bold One’s… boldness, LOL… could be tamed just a smidge, it’d be perfect. I think as a guideline for what Chase is trying to do, it’s a good one. It serves as a good example of just how much color information is still there under all that low-contrast imagery, and how much the movie can pop with a few solid adjustments. It also serves as an example of what going just a bit too far can look like.

Honestly, someone could probably do a general full-movie adjustment of Bold One that reduces some of the blue and green, pulls the contrast down just a smidgen, maybe ups the brightness just a touch, and turns down the saturation mildly, and it would fit RIGHT in next to Empire Strikes Back, Rogue One, or The Last Jedi in terms of visual appearance.

Dew it!!! (something something dark lighting side…)

I hope there is some interest in this - it’d be good to simply have the film kept intact, yet with the colour and lighting re-done.

Colors look great, man! It would be cool to get a LUT of this.

Interesting, glad you like it, but I’m not 100% familiar with what you’re asking for. Is it like the specifications for the grading of each scene?

A LUT is an acronym for Look-Up Table. And yeah, that’s basically what it is.

Gosh I would love to see this. I love this movie so much except for the coloring and lighting.

This is a really cool project. I haven’t seen a fanedit of this movie that’s really appealed to me but I would definitely be onboard with a version that’s just the original cut except I can actually see it.

I’d be interested in seeing how this stacks up against “Solo: The Bold One” regrade

Well this is the first I’ve ever heard of THIS. I looked at the KK650 regrade of Solo before but didn’t think it was all that much of an improvement. Found a reddit thread about the project

https://www.reddit.com/r/fanedits/comments/a6utr9/solo_the_bold_one_a_new_colour_grade_of_solo/

but can’t find any links, torrents, or anything. It’s a year old reddit thread and I don’t have a reddit account because I believe in positive mental health, LOL.

Anyone have any idea how to get a hold of this Bold One regrade?

That’s me posting that. A year ago.

Bumping for a pair of questions:

  1. has anything further come of this project
  2. does anyone know where a version of “The Bold One,” previously mentioned in this thread, can be found?

It appears to still be live at the original Google Drive link.

Okay, so progress hasn’t really stopped, just slowed down once I started to dig into the prequels some more. I’ll try to post updates if I find the time but otherwise, I will confirm that this has not been canceled.

Thanks for confirming that, very cool! I’ve wanted to get my hands on that, if I can, it will speed things up SIGNIFICANTLY… Would you mean shooting me a PM with the link? 😃

I’ve watched that regrade, pretty damn good I gotta say. Maybe a bit over the top in some areas, but overall great.

I am definitely interested. The colors were so muddy.

Finally saw The Bold One!

There is definitely a tendency to over-correct that pops up here and there. There’s also some scenes where it almost looks like a slightly-off HDR-to-SDR conversion in the highlights. It seems to mostly happen in the scene where Han meets Q’ira again.

(edit: Although applying an adjustment to “The Bold One” in its release form would probably be not great as there are quite a few compression artifacts going on with that file. It wasn’t encoded as well as it could have been, I don’t think)

I would definitely appreciate watching “Solo - A Star Wars Story… that you can see”

The Skywalker Saga:
I · II · III · IV · V · VI · VII · VIII · IX
This is the way.

Count me in for this as well, I’d love to see a ‘Slightly Less Bold Solo’ 😃

I have the 4k disc but have only played the blu-ray copy that is included with it, so have no idea if the HDR version has more pop than the regular HD.

Would anyone be able to point me in the direction of where I could view “The Bold One”? Interested to see what work was done there, and happy to help with any feedback with this project. Very interested in the concept of having Solo’s colour-grading match up better with the best of the rest of the franchise.

I played around with both the blu-ray and 4K blu-ray, and the 10 bit color of the HDR version definitely has more information that can be recovered, of course it is more demanding on a computer to work with and you have to deal with the HDR to SDR tonemapping as well.

Definitely though this movie needs scene by scene or even shot by shot adjustments to make it look more normal, which The Bold One definitely does even if over the top.

I was taking a look back at ‘The Bold One’ and began more and more to notice the inconsistent levels of contrast between scenes. Specifically the entire Mimban portion of the film. It almost, just almost, seems as if the original Reddit user had applied a heavy sharpening filter over that entire section. Can someone confirm this? I certainly hope it isn’t the case, but it would explain why that portion looks overly fake compared to the rest. I might even have to swap it out with the Bluray footage to use as a base.

I appreciate you taking at look at it yourself. Let me know if you have anything that can help with this project.

I feel like anyone who can understand that kind of terminology is better suited to this than I am. 😄
