Jesus. I feel terrible for the guy. I can't imagine experiencing the crap they put him through at that seminar.

That's just pathetic. I don't agree with animal rights extremists, I'm not a vegetarian and I think we can use animals in medical tests - but with some regulation and control over that, like never using endagered species, only killing the animal if it's absolutely necessary... About fur, I don't like it and I think it's absolutely ridiculous a person must use a fox fur all over her in order to look good. Animal rights extremists (and I mean EXTREMISTS, not people who defend the animal rights) are part of the pathetic, ridiculously insane part of the liberals, a small, sad part we should ignore.

Besides, shouldn't they care about STARVATION before caring about animals? If I had to kill all the pandas in the world in order to give hu ngry children food, I wouldn't think twice.

I like and completely agree with your ideas, Ric, and would like to join your camp. Where's my application?

I don't like using animals in scientific research, but untill somthing better comes along I think its a nessessary evil.

I agree. I think medical research is a necessary evil. Cosmetics research is a different story.

I once had a Behavioral Psych professor talk about how there was no conclusive evidence that smoking causes cancer. And how he knew of an experiment where they put these masks on dogs (beagles) that basically forced them to smoke cigarettes to try to prove it one way or the other. That's AWFUL.

Man Sage, that's awful. What is it with these crazy people and comparing the torture of humans at Auschwitz to experimenting on a soul-less animal?

In an mostly-unrelated note: does the fact that he has a switch sewn into his chest and an eletrode in his brain make him officially a cyborg?

Good question. I read an article about 1-2 years ago about a guy who's like a cybernetic genius. He put some implants in his arm that activated certain appliances and lights in his house when he walked in the room. Awesome, but very frightening stuff.

That's horrible. I don't agree on animal research if:

a) It's something frivolous or useless, like cosmetics or perfume.
b) It puts animal to horrible tortures, like burning them alive or something.
c) It has warfare purpouses, like testing weapons.
d) It's done on dangered species like dolphins or monkeys.

Now, how does one FORCE a dog to smoke? Surreal...

That's very creepy.

I wouldn't go so far as to call an animal "soul-less," they might not be able to think at such a relatively high-level that humans (most of them) do, but that in no way justifies depriving them of a being.

I would. Of course they do have intelligence on some level, but they do not have a soul, the ability to reason, to tell right from wrong, etc., which distinguishes them from humans.

OK so go ahead and tell a 6 year old child that his puppy is not going to heaven when he dies, but is going to simply move to a fightening pattern of infinite non-existance void, while his body will be a rotting corpse for the worms to eat.

Most parents just tell their kids their dogs go to heaven to avoid such admissions.

It is awful. I could not do that to any dog myself. It makes me want to throw up.

I'm reminded of watching 16mm movies in my Brain & Behaviour class when I was getting my Psych degree. They had this cat with its head in a stereotaxic instrument (to prevent its head from moving) and were inserting a probe into its brain to measure activity and response to certain stimuli. It became comic when we realised that the cat looked just like one belonging to one of my classmates. I'm not a curel person, but I do have a penchant for black humour.

I think anyone willing to protest animal medical research should be asked if s/he would take the animal's place. That ought to shut 'em up.

I don't know if I would describe them like that, though.

I saw a video like that once too. Remember Slim Goodbody? He did shows about health and the body. One of the shows, about the brain, recreated one of the original experiments into studying the brain, where a dog underwent the same process. You didn't actually SEE anything with electrodes being inserted into the brain, it was only implied, as were the reactions to what happened.

Slim Goodbody...I have thought about that show in a great many years. Probably my favorite show was about digestion.
The recreated experiment was about a man that was shot in the stomach. The doctor, seeing an opportunity to study, took some string and pieces of meat and lettuce and put them in the guy's stomach through the hole. He wanted to see which would be digested faster.
