Star Wars Standard Play Collection

Well in everyone involved - good to know that all the differing laserdisc footage out there is backed up onto dvd and obtainable for those who want it.

That was our idea all along. It may not be in Widescreen THX glory but it is all we had for a very long time............

There is also plenty more coming too from PAL VHS.

and you my friend are going to get them whether you want them or not,i know where you live.

I do want them and thankfully you do know where I live. The First Issues should be with you soon.

correct me if I'm wrong but since there is no standard play for return of the jedi on laserdisc is the ced 2 disc standard play or time compressed extended. Has anyone done transfers of the ced's? Obviously the first two ced releases of star wars and empire strikes back are one ced disc so they were stretched to fit the time limit so they are inferior to the standard play lasers unless you are a completist.

That being said I wish you luck in all your endeavors. I still would like to see transfers of the 8mm digest versions of the trilogy and the full and widescreen 8mm features, the beta releases, the ced releases the 16mm and 35mm theater prints. None of the 75mm release prints exist too bad because they are the ultimate collector's item to do a transfer from.

I just got my japan definitive collection boxset in the mail, Has anyone ever done a transfer of this one besides the fact of the annoying japanese subtitles which cannot be removed?

I purchased it because someone who collects laserdiscs told me the quality was better than the american release.

so I have that opened but unused, and the executor u.k. set opened but unused. Now I just need the equipment and nowhow on how to make my own legal backups.

Don't be so sure. We're working on that project right now.

As far as I know, there are no transfers of the CED discs. The assumption is that Jedi is the full 132 minutes which is confirmed here. I hope that the equipment to do your own transfers comes your way soon enough.......

The answer to your PM is YES. Send another with a valid e-mail address.

Isn't that with the earlier Special Collection?? I suppose that the principle of removing the subtitles will be the same........

Anyhow, a "heads up" if anyone is up for it, is an ebay auction for both Ewok movies on LaserDisc.

Doing something with these titles is not something that interests me but someone else may fancy a go........

Sorry, what I meant to say was that we're working on our 'technique' right now.

Is the Japanese Defcol essentially the same transfer as the US (barring subs)?

I have read a few comments over the years that the Jap version was suposed to be technically better than the US version.

All I can find for the 1994 version is.....

Unlike the US edition, the commentary track on this edition is isolated to Channel 2/R. This allows the film soundtrack to be presented on Analog Channel 1/L - maintaining compatibility with all LaserDisc players.

and the 1995 version.....

The commentary track on this edition is presented in the original English on Analog Channel 2/R. and in the Japanese translation on Analog Channel 1/L.

Nice and simple with no introduction or hype needed.........

Just the one set left to do and then the bulk of this project is done. A few more pieces of Star Wars history will now live forever........

Grinder now has his own thread about his two PAL projects so please keep checking there for progress. I am looking forward to those, particularly the PAL First Issue set which has never been done before (to my knowledge!).

I was not expecting DVD quality and the aim of this project is being achieved so I am a happy chap.

Do not forget that SW and ESB on this set have the original pre-digital sound and are speeded up by 4% so they will sound a bit rubbish.

Are there any other transfer projects out there being worked on that we do not yet know about???

The biggest missing link is the CED trilogy. Has anyone any plans for that???

Ok Russ and anyone else who is interested,i have SW "incredible shrinking ratio" & "fixed versions" Done, but what i want everyone to realise is this,i think there is a reason NO ONE used these for their releases,ALL these OLD ld's DO NOT look and sound that great, now Rikter might disagree because he is into making SL and DL versions of 1 of these sets, which is fine, but the ONLY sets that really look good are the "FACES" set(well kind of looks good)and the "Definitive Collection" and the "1997 Special Edition"so if any one gets copies of any of these please keep this in mind,so far i am not impressed with the quality, but I still LOVE the fact that they are going to be preserved, which is what Russ,Grinder and i have intended to do from the start anyways.

Which I agree with 100%.

It does prove that the THX remastering in 1993/94 did actually do a bloody good job, albeit not perfect which is a shame!!

You're welcome. What's planned for the releases of these sets, will Sega be uploading them? And about the quality, I think the pre-THX LD's really do look better in their own way, I'm sure there are people who prefer them over the THX ones.

That's no moon. It's a LaserDisc.

The thanks should really be from the rest of us to you for the mammoth job you have done over the last few months. Ten sets in total have been captured that cover at least one version of every main release. The whole thing adds up to a lot of time and money.

Here is a list to remind the world of the work you have done.

First Editions Fullscreen LD
Standard Play Fullscreen LD
Jap Special Collection LD
Special Widescreen Edition + fixed LD
1992 Fullscreen LD
Definitive Collection LD
Faces LD
Faces Fullscreen VHS
Special Edition LD
Special Edition Fullscreen VHS
