Rogue One: The Battle of Scarif fan edit (Released)

 (Edited)

Hi everyone! I’m the editor of the Maple Films version of the Hobbit (JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit). For my second fanedit, I’ve decided to make a version of Rogue One that revolves entirely around the Battle of Scarif. This was the most exciting sequence in the film by far, and I feel would make for an exciting 40-minute (or so) film.

In order to make The Battle of Scarif stand on its own (meaning you wouldn’t NEED to see all of Rogue One to understand what happens in this cut), I’m planning to make the following edits and adjustments:

  • Insertion of an opening crawl (isn’t everyone doing this??). It will summarize the events that occur during the course of Rogue One that lead to the Scarif battle.
  • First scene of the film is the confrontation between Krennic and Darth Vader, with some adjusted dialogue for Vader.
  • The Rebels will still bicker over going to war, but this stuff will be trimmed. As will Cassian’s super long monologue about the Rebellion. Booorrrring.
  • I never found myself that invested in Rogue One’s characters to begin with, so most “character” scenes and lines will be adjusted. The main focus of the edit will be the battle itself and the recovery of the Death Star plans.
  • Insertion of classic Star Wars music cues from John Williams. I’ve been going through the entire saga OST and will be dropping tracks where appropriate. Most people have agreed that Giacchino’s score just didn’t cut it. Not that I totally blame him; apparently he had 3-4 weeks to write and conduct everything.
  • Various SFX enhancements.
  • Other edits that I can’t think of right now, since I don’t have a copy of the film yet!

As with my Hobbit fanedit, The Battle of Scarif will be edited from the Blurays using 5.1 surround sound, and will be released in the best quality possible. Any tips or suggestions on where to find a good, complete Star Wars SFX library would be appreciated!

Sounds very interesting and wish you all the best with it.

There is a list of trailers, promos and adverts for Rogue here - http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/1054816 (you’ll have to scroll down past 5/6 posters to get to it) - hope it may be of some use for you.

I really loved your Dol Guldur edit (the white council scene was especially good). I liked the idea that LOTR could be preceeded by an anthology of mini films, as oppose the bloated hobbit.

If you are planning to abstract ROGUE ONE in a similar way, would you ever consider doing the same with any other Star Wars films?

To be honest, I haven’t given too much thought to editing the other Star Wars films. I know a lot of fan edits of them exist already and I wouldn’t want to do something that’s already been done. What did you have in mind?

The thing I liked about the Dol Guldur edit, was that I could watch that with a selection of LOTR fan films that had the same approximate length, which would each provide some sort of context to LOTR afterwards. So as oppose to watching a six movie marathon (HOBBIT>LOTR), you could build up to watching LOTR by watching a series of shorter pieces.

I guess in a sense that’s what all these new Star Wars Anthology films are trying to do is to elaborate on individual characters/events. A Battle of Scariff movie would do so in a more direct way than Rogue One did.

The thing I really liked about the Dol Guldur edit though - which I’d hope to see in other edits - is how smart you were at presenting the information. The white council scene as I mentioned earlier went from being a dull exposition dump, to developing into something investigatory with the inter-cut scenes with Beorn and so on. It was such a nice way to set up later events.

Similar shorts in Star Wars are endless really. You could focus on any one character or event, and build up context around them by using bits from other films in flashbacks and so on. ‘Anakin’s fall’ is the most common one that we’ve seen in specific edits, and short youtube trailers. I haven’t got any specific ideas myself though!

Hmmm…I think I actually prefer Giacchino’s score during the battle. The only part I didn’t care for in the original was the Rogue One cue when the Star Destroyers collide. Just my 2 cents

The sound design is done wonderfully.

Sorry, that might have been a bit harsh, didn’t mean it to be. I do agree with Jeebus, the sound design is fantastic.

Ha, no problem. It’s a subjective thing with music anyways. I just feel that Giacchino’s score was a little too generic for a Star Wars film. Perhaps if he had more time to write it, we could have got some more memorable cues.

I totally agree with you. I was super excited when I heard he was taking over, but what we got was not his best. I hope they keep him for future films and allow him to have the time necessary to develop his trademark variations of our favorite themes. His Star Trek theme variation is one of my favorites. I mostly was disappointed with his Rogue One theme. I know it’s a variation of Luke’s hero theme, but it just feels off and almost amateur compared to his other stuff. It’s also used at odd times in the movie. The battle stuff was fine enough for me, it just needed a flare of the force theme or hints of the cues you used in your edit.

I agree, they should give Giacchino another chance for a future Star Wars film. His Rogue One score did sound amateurish at times…like it was for an expensive fan film or something.

I’d like him to get another chance - with a little more time to get his work in (was it a month in total for him to do Rogue One?)

Anyway, really liked that snippet from your Edit - you can really see the work you’ve put into it with the 3 sections in your linked video - very much looking forward to seeing more 😃

They sure did, haha. Fortunately I filed a dispute and the link is back up (for now at least).

This is another edited scene featuring music by John Williams and updated SFX.

I didn’t ever have a problem with Giacchino’s score, in fact I quite liked some of it, but I’ll admit the movie feels a lot more “Star Wars” with Williams’ score. Good work.

I like what you’ve done so far. Have you thought about using The Battle of Hoth music(4:00) mark? It’s a real cool piano that has a menacing sound to it

I agree, that 4:00 mark is definitely a low point in Giacchino’s score. But judging by what you’ve done so far, this cue will change as well. 😃

Looking forward to the finished project!

I still need to watch R1 a second time to be sure if I really don’t like it or if I can change my mind. In any case, your edit seems very appropriate to deliver the real transition I was looking for between Episode III and Episode IV without losing time with boring characters escaped from a Resident Evil/Underworld flick and lame daddy/boyfriend/mentor/teenage issues (yep, R1 really is a Prequel movie era…). Your Hobbit edit was very fun and professional (albeit you may have cut a little bit too more here and there), so good luck with this one, I’ll be sure to get a copy of it when available 😃

Ok, here’s another clip. It’s the custom opening text crawl! Since this fanedit only focuses on the immediate events leading to the Battle of Scarif, I’ve used the crawl to summarize the first two-thirds of Rogue One’s plot. Enjoy!

VERY well done.
