Parker & Stone did do the history of the US bit, and it's funny as hell! Now I just have to see the rest of the movie.

Roger & Me is great. Even if Moore's docs are skewed heavily to his point of view, he still makes them fun as hell to watch.

Bowling for Columbine was fascinating to watch, even if it is complete and utter horseshit (spoilers), full of deceit and exaggeration.

Documentaries should fascinate viewers and make them think by presenting the facts in the most objective way possible, not by using questionable editting techniques and faked scenes. I knew there was something fishy about the Charleton Heston interview when I saw it.

I agree with many of the points Moore tries to make. I just don't agree with the way he makes them.

The problem with documentaries (as I learned in a grad school course on documentaries) is that there is not a single truly objective documentary film out there. Some are more objective than others. But none are 100% objective. Not even Ken Burns if you can believe that. And if there was ever a documentarian that appeared objective on first viewing, it's Burns.

Then there are those that just completely push the envelope like Moore. Or should I say "tears right through the envelope leaving it behind in his dust." At least he brings greater exposure to the genre. That's what I say about it.

It's certainly true that a 100% objective documentary is rare--likely nonexistent. The point the author of that document is trying to make is that BFC doesn't count as a documentary because it relies upon intentionally deceptive and misleading methods to make its point. Most documentaries present the facts in a way that helps skew the perspective to that of the filmmaker, and that's fine. BFC doesn't simply present things in a certain light to get you to look at the topic in a new way; it lies to you, twisting the truth and coercing you to come to conclusions to which you probably wouldn't arrive under normal circumstances.

The first time I saw it, I thought it was genius. Now I think it's trashy genius.

I agree that it is completely misleading and deceptive. As is Roger & Me. Just not quite as malicious in intent. That's why you won't find Roger & Me in the documentary or special interest sections at Blockbuster, but in the comedy section.

Regardless of how off Moore is in his interpretation of the truth, you do still have to give him credit for revitalizing interest in docs on the whole. How many people really gave a damn before Roger & Me came out? And how many more are watching since BFC?

In my opinion docs are not meant to objective, because objectivity is an imposible human goal. Why would you want a movie that has no opinion anyways?

My beef with most sources, like the news and the government is that they aren't upfront about their bias and their true intentions. If Bush just siad, look we're going to into Iraq to take over the oil fields. Well I wouldn't agree, but at least I would respect his honesty and then we would all be free to discuss the facts.

Moore is 100% upfront about his beliefs and his agenda, its not hard to tell where he stands. His movies are his commentary, and I like them. I know others do not, but at least you know what you're getting.

BTW, there's a good chance that AICN will soon be wearing one of our banner ads. I was talking to a friend over there this morning and he's going to talk to Harry Knowles about it. But aparently Harry has already voiced agreement with our cause, so it sounds like a fair shot.

Did those letters ever go out to ebert?

I sent out the letter to Ebert bordering on two months ago and haven't heard anything back. I'm afraid to follow up on it for fear that I will appear too overbearing and he'll just disregard the cause and my e-mails entirely. Do you all think I should send it again?

Okay, maybe I will do that. It might be nice to get that out to him just as the IJ boxset is coming out. Remind people that there is still one set of movies that has yet to be released.
