It makes perfect sense. It gets a progressily darker tone. The Phantom Menace is a time of peace. Before the Clone Wars before the Empire at a time when the galaxy was at peace. This is why it is as light hearted as it could have been. Attack of the Clones progresses to a time where the whole galaxy is at the brink of a massive war. The result is the movie has a much darker tone and is alot less of a kids movie. Its tone was much darker then Return of the Jedi and a bit darker then A New Hope. However The Empire Strikes Back is still the darkest and most adult of the series. Revenge of the Sith is the beginning of the empire and the slaughter of the Jedi Knights. This is the most dark time in the series and the movie is going to reflect.

Sigh, ROTS is not the slaughtering of the Jedi. They are not going to show the violent killing of the Jedi on-screen. Vader himself hunts down and kills them, and he only shows up for a little bit in the movie. So that part's happenning off-screen. And Attack Of The Clones was not dark...at all. Especially not darker than ROTJ. Whether you think so or not, Jedi had the darkest story arc involving the Emperor. There's no way Backstreet Boy killing some tusken raiders was darker than that.

Words from Natalie Portman "Its pretty sick" Is Natalie Portman a lier too now huh?

If by liar you mean sucky actress, then yes. Of course she's going to hype the movie. I'm sure she's done it for the last two and they weren't even good.

Don't diss Natalie Portman. She is as brilliant as she is gorgous. She can act with the best of them. She also really looks great. Grevious will do most of the Jedi killing in the movie. We saw this in Clone Wars. While the scene contained no blood it did included some Jedi being wiped out in a quite shocking manner for a cartoon. I think the tone of Clone Wars will show up in Episode 3. I definutly believe we will see some shocking Jedi killing on screen. I will be quite dissipointed if we don't get such a thing. Samual Jackson stated that he will die and will go out with a bang. Attack of the Clones is the second darkest Star Wars movie. It includes the death of 200 Jedi and the beginning of a war that will plunge the galaxy into chaos. While Return of the Jedi ends with dancing around a fire and a time of peace and hope for the future. Return of the Jedi blew alot of opportunities to be dark. Harrison Ford begged for Han Solo to die but George wouldn't allow it. Lando was going to die but they changed there minds. Empire is overthrown by fucking teddy bears. It is not a dark movie at all.

That's right folks. That literally says, "...she is gorgous. She also looks really great."

Wow. Just, wow. Maybe you should find a real g/f. They're actually cooler because you don't look at them only through a tv screen. Just a thought.

George Lucas doesn't direct the Clone Wars cartoons. He doesn't have anything really to do with them. Huge difference between a cartoon and movie.

Yes...the death of Jedi at the hands of cartoon-like robots and termites. That was really dark.

Yes, it ends that way. They destroy the Emperor and Vader and pretty much free the galaxy. What would you have them do?

Again, look at the scenes with the Emperor. Nothing in the prequels has been as dark as that gets, with Luke and Vader in an emotional battle and the Emperor overseeing it all and then going to kill Luke. I guess you don't see that.

And don't even trash the Ewoks when the enemies in the prequels are fucking stupid-looking robots that go, "Roger Roger!" and the heros are those stupid Gungans.

Ian Mcdarmid as the Emperor rocks. Thats one of my favorite scenes in the trilogy. That can't make up for things like ewoks beating stormtroopers, Bobas sucky "death", executer gets destroyed by a ship 1/1000000 its size, no major characters die. Also like Lucas said its all fake. Puppets or digital characters its all the same. It all ain't real. So people saying too much CGI I think don't have a clue.

Before Jimbo picks apart DJ again & invokes a similar post from DJ -- which will result in yet another post of the same fashion -- I must say, Y'ALL ARE GETTING WAY TOO NIT-PICKY!! This argument does NOT need to go this far. It was almost lame to begin w/ & the more u two criticize each other, the less interesting you get. Like I said b4, Lucas is the only one who knows what mavie is supposed to have what tone. If in you opinion, ROTJ was really dark & scary, then that is your opinion. If you (for whatever reason) thought TPM had the darkest tone, then you are welcome to that opinion. But, to go at each other's throats, it is ridiculous. Please, for the sake of this good thread about an actual issue, end your argument here. If you insist on discusing this further, please go elsewhere; creating a new thread about the tones of the different movies would be the perfect spot. Thank you.

A good movie doesn't have to have major characters die. The point of the saga as Lucas is making it now would be screwed up if someone died in ROTJ.

Jango's death was just as sucky, if not worse. How can you even say that about Boba and not about Jango? He gets off a couple shots and then he's dead. At least Boba's death was funny. Heck, Boba wasn't a major character in the OT until afterwards when he gained the fan following. And even Lucas has said that he doesn't consider him dead, or something to that effect. He was just tossed out of the battle.

The Executor: made perfect sense. Suicide ship crashes into the bridge and the ship gets screwed. I had no problem with this. Hell, look at how the At-Ats were taken down (and BOTH Death Stars for that matter). The destruction of all the major Imperial ships/vehicles/Death Stars were all kinda the same.

More problems with Return of the Jedi

The Empire would be stupid enough to build another death star after how easily that last one was destroyed.

Beginning is very very slow

Nothing in the movie is too unexpected. Not like the excelent twists of The Empire Strikes Back

Obi-Wans ghost was done wrong. The way he appeared and disappeared in The Empire Strikes Back was perfect. Here he walks around and talks to Luke like a guy off the street.

These are flaws, and yet Hayden and Portman's poor performances were not?

The Empire actually intended to build three Deathstars, but the third was captured by Hutts and renamed Darksaber. Had the second Deathstar been finished, the exhaust shaft problem would likely have been fixed.

Besides Palpatine was just arrogant. And Jango Fett's death rules.

Interpret this anyway you want, as it is just an analogy, but if 10 million people find the idea of eating feces to be absolutely disgusting, while one person thinks it's great, is that one person's opinion as valid as everyone else's?

Anyway, I see Lucasfilm focusing the vast majority of the marketing hype on the Anakin/Vader deal. It's obviously the single biggest element this movie has going for it, and perhaps if they hype it enough it will distract enough people from wondering how crappy the rest of the movie will be.

Shhhh. Don't tell anyone, but all the Jedi get trapped and eaten by Ewoks.

This will serve to lend more emotional significance to the scene in ROTJ when Luke, Han and Chewy barely escape the same fate.

Jimbo sure as hell has the right to feel however he wants...but the way he's backing up his argument is so stupid. All he cares about in Portman is her looks...that don't make a good actress in my eyes. And it doesn't make up for her horrible performance in both films (AOTC especially).

If I remember what Ir ead, you think the beginning of Jedi is slow? AOTC...let's see, we've got a ship blowing up and STILL it's boring, everyone sitting around again and again...boring. And of course, talking and talking before flying around and still talking. It's a blab-fest, and an un-entertaining one at that. The only scene that managed to not be a borefest in the movie was the end...but then it got boring again.

And of course, who could forget this:

I thought it made him less creepy then he managed to be in Empire and more "human." His converation with Luke was one of my favorite scenes. If he'd been like in Empire, it would've just been odd. Do you write the laws of the spirits now?

Id say Natalie Portmans acting ability equals her looks. Considering how gorgous she looks that saying alot. I think she is brilliant and I don't like you guys insulting her. Nobody could have done that role better. I also think your a bit down on Hayden. I think he did a good job too overall.

ROTS is not the slaughtering of the Jedi. They are not going to show the violent killing of the Jedi on-screen.

Spoilers to follow:

Actually, They do, in fact, show Anakin leading a troop of clonetroopers into the Jedi Temple and we do see him kill a large amount of the Jedi still inside. The camera only cuts away when Anakin enters the room where the younglings are training. They say hi to him--and the doors shut.

This is, of course, after Anakin kills Mace Windu, and before he slaughters the rest of the Separatist leaders, chokes his pregnant wife half to death via the force, and then gets in a fight with Obi Wan Kenobi that lasts for apx 14 straight minutes onscreen.

As a matter of fact, most of the Jedi Deaths onscreen will come at Anakin's hands. There will be some shots of Jedi getting it from the Clones when the clones turn, but most of the Jedi you see die in Return of the Sith will die at Anakin's hands before he goes in the suit. A very large amount of the Jedi die in ROTS. A few escape due to Obi Wan and Yoda's warning beacon at the temple, and those are the Jedi that Vader "Hunts down and destroys" inbetween III and IV, but he personally wipes out everything alive in the Temple during the course of this movie, and we do see most of it.

Ok, that's certainly pushing the envelope a bit. Doesn't sound like a kiddy movie to me. But then again, Anakin has already slaughtered female Tuskin Raiders and their children so this doesn't surprise me. However, this just might be a little much for the average child to see. The really big question is will Lucas stick to his guns on this or will it get edited out.

Well, you dont' actually see him kill any of the kids--and he's already admitted to killing women and children tuskens in the last movie. The other version of this shot I've heard is different only in that when he enters, you only see him from behind, and the younglings are looking up at him, one smiles and says "Hi, Ani."

And then he flicks his lightsaber on.

And then the door shuts and they cut to the next scene of Obi Wan chasing after General Greivous.

I don't think this scene is going to see the cutting room. It's a perfect transition scene to the next sequence--and it's nowhere near as horrific as watching him essentially trying to kill his own wife and unborn children on Mustafar, even if he doesn't even really realize that's what he's doing.

Well, even if it's just implied that Anakin wipes them out, it still might be a little much for the kiddies.

You're right though, it won't be as horrific as the end of Padame.

Aaand saved to desktop.

The coolest thing about these films so far has been the concept artwork by very talented artists most of which gets ignored by Lucas in favour of things that are far less cool.

The "Art Of" books are great. I must pick them up one day.
"The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." - Goering.

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it." - Goebbels.

"In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." - Orwell.
