Return of the Jedi cut-scene — Page 6

It's an interesting short scene, but like many deleted scenes it's easy to see why it was cut.

The opening (following the Death Star II scenes) with R2 and Threepio walking to Jabba's palace is good enough on its own.

In addition, this particular cut scene was more or less done at the end of TESB when the group is escaping Cloud City and about to hyperdrive away.

Great to get more perspective on these developments.  Wonder what made him toss in that tidbit about the ghosts...

Thanks for posting the interview, mania.  But is it just me, or does Kazanjian not really sound like he knows of what he speaks?  He looks at the blank space in the matte painting and thinks it's unfinished?  Clearly, he must know how matte paintings work/worked?  And I thought his comment about the ships' proximity to Jabba's was interesting... can Jabba's be seen in the painting?  I looked at the painting for a solid 30 seconds and couldn't find anything looking like a palace...

So we have Lucas saying it was Hamill, Hamill saying it wasn't and then saying it was, and Kazanjian saying it wasn't.  Whom do we believe?

No, it's not just you, it looks the same way to me.

Hamill looks like Hamill on that scene, and I don't understand why they would need a body double for Hamill back then for that shot. I mean, they would need it NOW, but then? With Hamill looking exactly like he did on Jedi and available (because he did shot the X-Wing cockpit re-shot)? I don't believe it.

I love how Kazanjian can't believe how utterly ridiculous the entire cut scene is. And it looks like they took the hallway and elevator from the later deleted scene (which Kazanjian was there for, apparently) and used deleted scenes from ESB for the chamber. He says its a double in the cave because he was there, but he never saw the matte painting of the exterior apart from a storyboard? How involved was he in the scene, because it sounds like "not at all". Lucas truly did nearly direct RotJ, even into editing, creating scenes from nothing, then deciding not to use them at all.

The most interesting thing is Kazanjian being the one to suggest Anakin's ghost show up at the end, instead of Ben/Yoda only.

??? I thought that was SuperShadow's suggestion?

It's interesting to read him say that it's a body double, if it is it's a very good match for Mark both facially and in terms of body language (It would also mean I would have to apologise to Vbangle who insists it's not Mark).

The footage in the meditation chamber looked like a composite to me as the helmet looks really glossy (as in the ROTJ style).

Does this mean that originally Vader was to address the Emperor from his booth in ESB (explaining his bow) and the hologram was later moved to outside the booth where he could kneel with more style?

Sometimes actors aren't available for a last minute reshoot. Body doubles aren't something any of the studios really like to talk about. Especially when it comes to nude scenes, but that's something for a different discussion! ;)

Do we know definitively in the ROTJ production schedule when the cave scene was shot? If it was concurrent with the X-wing and Speeder Bike closeup scenes, then you have something to go on.

I think what Kazanjian is saying about the Milliennium Falcon and X-Wing being so close to Jabba's Palace is they are relatively close, not actually right next to; in the same general vicinity where they might be spotted (since Jabba and at least Boba Fett know what the Falcon looks like).

I don't quite get why Howard doesn't recognize a matte painting with a black space for a live-action plate on it. Maybe he's been looking at too many CG effects over the years and forgotten.

Luke's first appearance in Jabba's Palace and the lightsaber fired from Artoo in the Skiff scene works much better than seeing that cut scene in the cave which is kind of pointless.

The Vader scene, obviously sounding and looking like something concocted from unused Empire and Jedi footage doesn't add anything new, and the dialogue is forgettable.

All those bits could have worked better in different contexts.

The meditation chamber bit should be on The Executor (with a new establishing FX shot) before Vader arrives at the Death Star (which should dwarf it).

The lift section should be before meeting Palpatine later in the film.

I don't think it hurts that much seeing the saber built but personally I would have had it built on Dagobah not Tatooine and have Yoda die in the beginning of the film (after completing Luke's Jedi training as best as he could) rather than just waiting for Luke to return and dropping down dead in the middle of his reunion conversation.

Only ANH starts with a bang.

Having ROTJ start with a carry over of the mood of ESB wouldn't have hurt the film in my opinion.

ESB starts rather slowly and starting this film with Luke telepathically pulled to his biological father while losing his last mentor would have bridged the downbeat ending of the previous chapter with the action sequences to come rescuing Han.

Having these little bits crunched together seems a little Forced (pun intended).

It not only looks like Mark Hamill's face- but it looks like his hands as well.

I don't know how HK can say that was "not Mark", especially since Mark says he now remembers shooting the scene.....

I still don't get it.  How close to Jabba's are they?  They're on Tatooine, that's all the painting tells me.  Is that what you're saying is "too" close?  Or are you assuming they're within miles of the palace?  Back to the former, are we supposed to assume that they dropped the Falcon off a couple planets away and took a cab to Tatooine?

Star Wars, Rashomon-style. Well Lucas is a fan of Akira Kurosawa isn't he? :)

I'd assume it's a distance the droids could easily travel.

I entirely agree.  The phrase is so extreme and unnecessary, and I find it more than a little disturbing.

He also says "Luke" a bunch of times in ESB, but not in ROTJ, which may be where they got the Luke line from.

Not true.  Vader says "Luke, help me take this mask off."

Ever since reading the novelisation of the book, back in 1983, I've wondered how this scene played out.  Great to finally see it.  It would be a great addition to the film; I'd sooner see it re-inserted than as part of the bonus disc.

Hmm, you know what would have helped your argument?  If he had used quotation marks.

Fail.
