Return of the Jedi - The Spence Final Cut (Released) — Page 26

Preference and taste is what it'll come down to, so I'm glad it isn't a case of not having seen the options.

Aside from taste, there's no reason the two Han/Luke scenes need anything between them-- wiping directly to the crashed speeder bike would be the right cut. Han and Luke rush off to search. 3P0: "And you said it was pretty here..." WIPE TO: what they find-- Leia's crashed speeder.

But when we get to disputing over taste, it's really time for someone (me) to study that tutorial you gifted us with and put my own ideas out there. Otherwise, this is just looking the gift horse in the mouth.

I won't be going back to fix those things, as I don't feel they need to be "fixed"... all the cuts came out exactly the way I wanted them to. Version 2 will just be a tech glitch fix.

It is always interesting to hear what people would've done differently. I dare you to try some of those ideas, because trust me, just about everything that's been said here I did try. If you can make it work I'd be highly impressed and quite happy to be proven wrong!

^^ those edits sound pretty good too)

I'm pretty new to editing as well - but i started using the trial version of womble a while back and its pretty simple to get into.

the trial version does everything the licensed version does except limited to 31 days so if you find you dont like it - you've lost nothing....except time...i guess.....

you can do it! MTHaslett :)

You can never go home again, but i guess you can shop there.

If you guys want to start editing, Womble is very simple and will do the job. It's a good place to start.

If you want to get really in-depth and have a lot more control over everything, get Sony Vegas. It's the same price as Womble. It's got a bit of a learning curve, but it's well worth it.

Author

My only hangup with Vegas is editing with audio. I hate you can't scrub through with audio... You can only hear it if you play it. As someone who often edits to the sound/music, that's crucial.... I edit on Premiere, and yes it's glitchy when rendering, but I've found my method that works finally.

Loving the edit, don't post much on the forums but getting interested in alot of edits currently in the works.

Just noticed while watching the commentary that when Adm. Ackbar says "concentrate all fire on that super star destroyer" he actually says "superstar destroyer".

Amused me way too much.

Haha dude I couldn't help it. There's a bunch of lines I repeated. I believe I yelled "its a trap!" as well.

Yes you did. I was very amused by that.

I honestly had a lot of fun doing that commentary track. I hope it was informative rather than just me being goofy, but that will always be a part of it with me I think. I think I will continue to do them for my edits, or at least the major ones.

And if you liked the commentary track, Duel of the Fates will have one. Just think, you get to listen to me for 3+ hours, you lucky dog you!

Just watched this cut

GOOD

.) like the idea that Dagobah scenes are shown earlier

.)Luke sensing his friends are in danger, execution not perfect but very good idea

.)cutting out Leia delivering Chewie, the alien voice is irritating and repetitive

.)cutting out Boba Fett, I still like him, but his death scene is awful, I didn´t miss him

.)Han & Lando conversation feels more natural now

.)speeder bike music adds to the scene

.)cutting out Wicket meets Leia Organa

.)cutting much Ewok stuff in general

.)C-3PO telling the story, very good editing

.)no Tarzan yell, it´s really cool that you just hear the knocking before they enter th AT-ST, Adywan should keep this cut in mind for his Revisited, not just muting the yell but cutting this shot entirely

.)duel taking place on Star Destroyer

.)adding Death Star to Emperor shots, best addition, looks awesome

.)celebration, idea very good, music is much better than in all editions before, maybe some shots of Ewok celebration would have been nice, but it might be impossible to create a better celebration sequence than you did with the accessable material

.)final shot, PERFECT way to end ROTJ

BAD

.)Rancor scene being cut, it´s classic, and Luke just being "arrested" doesn´t work well - feels too jumpy

.)Jabba sequence is cut too short, I think with the Rancor scene would´ve helped

.)I like Salacious Crumb, I´d have kept one laugh :-)

.)too much Han Solo cut

.)Duel of the Fates: I´d prefer the lightsaber battle without music or something different.

Though it´s undeniably a great piece of film music DUEL OF THE FATES been used way too often.

.)Cutting Luke´s escape with shuttle, it could have worked if you´d show the attack on the SD after Vader´s death, then Luke flying out, then the crashing A Wing & destruction of SD

UGLY

.) transition from Yoda´s death to Jabba Palace establishing shot waaay too abrupt

.)Anakins theme & Vader´s death

this one is really awful and almost disqualifies this cut alltogether.

Reasons:

.)First music´s way too loud in the mix

.)I could accept if you´d let it play for a shorter amount of time, but it DESTROYS the tone of the scene when playing over the ENTIRE sequence

.)OST is TONS better, esopecially the harp playing ´Vader´s theme

.)it reminds me of The Phantom Menace

I love John Williams music but god, this is one "sappy" tune

it´s too kitschy, even for Sci-Fi-Fantasy Space Operas

I´ve listened to your commentary as well and see your point but no, No, NO.

Great effort nevertheless, still prefer the original cut over your´s.

But turning ROTJ into an excellent movie is quite a challenge per se.

Not as much as trying to solve the PT´s problems though. :-p

(Sorry, this is practically impossible even for Adywan, I´m afraid)

Thank you for your review.

However, may I pose a question? Do you think your opinion on my changes was heavily, heavily influenced by a hatred of the prequels? Because that what it seems like to me.  It's just interesting to get that point of view, as  I edited from the angle of someone that enjoys the prequels.

Yes, I felt that it was your intention to somehow connect ROTJ with the prequels.

That´s understandable & respectable.

But there´s no need. Lucas didn´t care very much the other way around so why should someone make up for his mistakes ?

Regardless of my dislike of the PT the music just feels too cute (&overpowering at the same time, if that makes any sense) and out of place in that particular sequence.

And I´m not a die hard OT purist fan.

I really love Adywan´s Revisited (though Purist version is the better one) and I´m very openminded when it comes to "modify" ROTJ.

Bottom line:

I just don´t like when the OT get´s "prequelized".

They don´t deserve it  :-)

EDIT

just listening to the commentary.

It´s fun !

Didn´t recognize the cutting when Han looks at the Falcon before heading for Endor.

Very cool decision to cut the dialogue there.

*best cuts are always those you don´t recognize*

Damn, I love that line, I might steel it for my signature.

haha yeah thanks for listening to the commentary. There's a lot of little cuts that I point out, and it also gives you a little bit of an idea of why I did some of the things I did. My whole goal was always to be able to back up my choices, even if not everyone agrees with them.

Agreed 100%

I really dig fanedit commentaries.

Adwayn´s info text is cool as well.

Your voice is very suitable for doin these, keep em coming !

Oh dude, there will be a whale of a commentary for Duel of the Fates, trust me.

I watched this again the other day.  It's nice for ROTJ to be fun again.  This works nice for trilogy marathons as well.  By the time ROTJ comes around, I'm usually ready for a nap, but not anymore.

Thanks again for making this, Spence.  It's fun to watch an edit with more bold ideas.

I'm having trouble with part 4 on megaupload.  The same "temporarily unavailable" problem as I gather others have had with other parts.

The edit is up for fanedit of the month on FE and is currenntly in the lead on votes! It also made the Star Wars hall of fame page. Thanks to everyone on this site who reviewed/voted so far!

Funny thing they were prequelized before episode 1 was even released, in 1997, and then in 2004 updated prequelized.

Considering George was writing phantom in 1994 it obviously effected the special edition in a negative way.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

Holy crap, is that true... He worked on that turd that long???? I just thought he turned his first draft a week before shooting!
