Return of the Jedi - Cinch presents the U-matic telecine bootleg of 35mm (1st gen) (Released)

ok,

cinch has come across a nice rarity…

hinted at earlier…

a set of u-matic tapes:

=================

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U-matic

pics of the deck and tapes:

====================

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/7137/jeditc.th.jpg

format : u-matic tape

title : return of the jedi telecine

year : 1983

=========================

condition : average, sound/video drop-outs

color : a little dull, with some parts blown out

sound : mono

=========================

data about tapes:

2 tapes. one has 4 reels (i think), the other has 3 reels.

transferred off a VO-9600 u-matic sp deck.

1 channel audio only.

scotch uca-60 and uca-75 tapes

the telecine might be an rca tk66 or similar with tube cams.

they didn’t have a scope attachment (hence i think it was done on a filmchain) so they transferred it flat.

zoomed in quite a bit, edges are cropped off (see credits)

a friend gave it to him, and it has never been played until now… cinch located a u-matic deck, and hooked it up for a video transfer, and then converted it to a raw digital capture.

i have a 1000x480 WMV conversion of it.

pm me for the links ONLY if you can re-host it on other file sharing sites, usenet, and myspleen.

i’ll post more information, screenshots, and details as they come up.

Cool!

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

This would have to have been spread across two tapes, right? I never saw a U-matic tape longer than 90 minutes, and those were hard to get by the end of the 80's, at least they were in my neck of the woods.

Would be nice to see pictures of the tape if possible?

Is this the deal that will keep the Empire out of here forever, negative1? ;)

So how can you know this U-matic telecine bootleg match the original theatrical colors?

Pretty neat. I know JEDI is the one where, since VCRs had really taken off, they were really trying to keep a lid on bootlegs. But at the same time it was a losing battle since it was the only one of the three that had a modern-style wide opening weekend, which made keeping track of all those prints a lot harder.

we don't..

and actually previewing it,

they don't look that great either..

however, as a historical preservation,

it has it's place.. and maybe some of it

can be used as a reference.. (i haven't

watched the whole thing yet)..

added some more details

and pictures of the deck and tapes

in the main post..

so it was 2 tapes after all..

yeah, the quality is about VHS.

still don't have any takers for

sharing it?

When you say first generations, is that one removed from the source reproduction, or is this the believed first copy?  Where did this tape source from geographically?  PAL/NTSC?  One of the main RotJ bootleg stories was the Hastings heist.  Where LFL/Fox put out a bounty for the prints return:  (Babyhum's BH018 has some news reports on the story)

But there were other RotJ's which were lifted.  According to:

http://books.google.com/books?id=MjFL1KbcX_oC&pg=PA122&dq=%22return+of+the+jedi%22+piracy&hl=en&ei=1Xj_Ta2cJI6r0AHhp9ieAw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCoQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22return%20of%20the%20jedi%22&f=false

During a two-week period in the summer of 1983, the season's blockbuster hit, Return of the Jedi, was stolen five times from cinemas in three states and in Britain to be turned into illegal videocassettes.

Guessing the four US heists created the necessity for the Hastings bounty.

Does it match the cropping of Video Collectors' ROTJ_TP and Treadwell's TWC328_ROTJB?  (which share a common origin, but are multiple reproductions away from each other)

It's a shame that the quality isn't better, but it's still pretty cool that artifacts like these are still around! It has real historical significance :)

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I just finished downloading this. Using Free Download Manager reduced my download time from 30min/file to ~8-10 minutes total!

I'm just waiting to verify the CRC-32 with none before 'spleening it.

Also, -1, I can't send you PMs because your inbox is full.

Moth3r's ANH boot was U-matic -> DVD recorder, right? What generation was the U-matic tape?
