Zombie's post made me do the ebay search I swore I'd never do again: Star Wars Trilogy arcade. Couldn't there ever be free shipping? ;) Too many hours have been spent on these machines. By me. The bench model, the large screen w/seat model, the stand up only model and even a custom extra large screen version with a full gaming seat rig thingy. But the best one I've ever played is the Namco version standard size with seat attached. No messing with bad joysticks and one can actually hit everything on the screen edges-unlike all the large screen versions.

I miss seeing and playing these machines everywhere.

Heck, shipping is the easy part. I mean, who cares if you have to spend $300 dollars on a freight train shipment. The harder part is how you transport a 1-tonne wooden crate meauring over six feet tall into your home? You literally need a forklift, and at least a cube van, and then a second forklift to bring it into your home. That's how they installed these in the arcades. And that's assuming it's all in working order too. On top of the $2000 you already spent.

The Dave and Busters near me has the SW Trilogy Arcade bench-seat model, so I figure dropping $2 a month there is better than the god-awful expense and headache of actually trying to buy, ship and install one of these in my home. It would simply be impossible. And forget it if there is even a single stair. These jumbo deluxe versions are simply unfit for residential use, unfortunately.

lol! I found it hard enough to move my massive 36" sony CRT flat panel up to a second story...these huge cabinets would kill someone. At least the projection models have detachable screens.

It is better to find a local machine, but more often than not the difficulty will be cranked up. This isn't much of a problem but what makes it impossible at times is when owners take it upon themselves to rig the joystick and buttons to not work properly and thus make it harder for the player to achieve high scores. The one near me has a rigged joystick, fire trigger and they replaced the screen with an hdtv. The image is fantastic, but the edges are even more cropped than the normal 50" version so this makes hitting the edge figures in the later levels nearly impossible.

The Supermodel emulation is promising, but still laggy and buggy at this point.

You can't tell that I play this machine too much...even so I only know a few of the hidden secrets for bonus points.

I just added a working Nintendo Virtual Boy to my collection. Review will be coming soon! I played this a few times in 1995 at the Blockbuster Video demo station and thought it was cool but not as good as the Game Boy, but I mainly like it for the physical design. Came with Mario Tennis, which was the same game I tried out at Blockbuster back in the day, so this is still the only game I have played for it (although I mihght have tried that boxing game as well back then). Looking to pick up the 3D Wario game soon.

This also marks the first Nintendo console I have actually paid money for personally (parents bought the NES and GB in 1988 and 1990). My Dreamcast has been acting weird this week and I swear it knows I'm bringing home a Nintendo product...

.

How does that work anyway? Shouldn't it not look any better given that the game has a fixed resolution? I mean, the one thing a new screen would be good for - for sure - is no burn-in, but still...

It's just very bright and clean with no burn in. Possibly slightly upscaled. I ran across a standup version recently but it had a loose joystick that wanted to fall down when moved downwards so the crosshair looked as if one was having a seizure. Still managed to nail 14/15 secrets somehow.

I also finally got to play a Spy Hunter cabinet which has long been one of my arcade grails. And believe me, there is nothing like playing the real thing. The emulations and ports stink and you stink at them because the controls cannot be handled in the same way. You need the steering yoke and the gas pedal. Personally, though I love the game, I can never get very far at home on ports. Managed to break the high score, get past most of the first waves and almost got into the boathouse.

Finally, I unlocked 007 mode on Goldeneye. But seriously: 00 Agent difficulty on Aztec. What were they thinking???

My biggest issue is the controls required nowadays.  Last year I played a little Halo and Left 4 Dead (my first exposure to either of these) with xhonzi, and the thing I kept coming back to was how complicated the controls were.  I was constantly getting killed because I couldn't remember which button did what.  Maybe it was just because I needed more exposure to it, but it seems like console game controllers have gotten more and more complicated.

Funny thing is, I used to play PC games a lot, and obviously they got very complicated....but the keyboard seems like a much more reasonable controller to do more than just run, jump, and shoot.

It could just be that I remember it differently... but I think you weren't nearly as bad as I thought you'd be or as you make it out here.  In fact, I thought you were making good strides in the few hours.

I've played with worse.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

I have a top-loading A/V Famicom (model HVC-101). With a NES->Famicom adapter, it's the best of both worlds. I get a clean composite signal with all of the benefits of the second-generation NES/Famicom consoles. Also, no modding required!

Yay!

Does anyone here enjoy Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril?

My favorite game is Mega Man 5. (Ugh, it's so weird to not type it as Megaman, but it's supposedly the correct way.)

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I've started playing through the Zelda series from the very first game. I'm actually about to beat it.

Previously, I'd only been exposed to Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask (as the first console I ever owned was an N64) which are both amazing games, but I wanted to go back to the roots of the series and really get a feel for it, and I've also been wanting to get into more retro gaming as it was, so Zelda made a good starting point.

The part that's not so great, but also awesome, is that I'm playing them on an emulator on my tablet. Which is great because I can take it wherever I go and play whenever I want to; but does lack the "authenticity" of the original console.

Either way, it's still a lot of fun. I like not having my hand held throughout the game. It's been pretty great having to find everything for myself with nothing to guide me.

Recently I've been playing the Atari Anniversary Edition version of Battlezone for the Gameboy Advance, on my Gamecube.

Don't let the second game frighten you, it is really cool if you let yourself get into it and don't get stuck. I encourage you to resort to online player guides or, if you really must, gamegenie cheats, before putting it down and never touching it again like most younger Zelda fans seem to do. I feel it deserves a lot more than it generally gets, it is a fun experience that lets you a little deeper into the world of the original Zelda. Now you can visit villages and settlements for the first time and even interact with people, in a limited NES kind of way.

I'm pretty excited for Adventure of Link.

I'm currently still stuck in the Second Quest of Legend, and trying to balance it with the coming finals isn't making that go any faster, haha.

Back in college, to maintain sanity through finals week, I developed a tradition of digging my old NES out of the closet and tackling either Metroid or The Legend of Zelda. Anytime I needed a distraction I'd play a little bit further in the game I selected for that semester's finals, then go back to studying. After my last final was complete I'd spend an hour or two finishing the remainder of the game.

When I've finished my current Final Fantasy 7 run I will complete Ocarina Of Time (just got the big ham to do) so why not make OT.Com OTPlusZelda.Com for a wee while?

My Virtual Boy has died. Since I didn't drop it or anything, I am hoping it is the batteries, even though it was a new pack and I played it for less than two hours. May have to open it up and check the connections in the worst case scenario. Unless this stupid thing has 1.5 hours of battery life, which even I don't believe.

Davnes007, if you can get a bunch of CD-i games for cheap, I would invest in the system, just make sure it is tested and working, as they tend to be unreliable today like many early 1990s non-mainstream hardware. If you are patient it isn't hard to find a good deal on the console.
