Reedit "Super Series"

Author
Time

Okay, so I’m gradually reediting the entire film series. Fortunately they don’t all need a lot of work! The episodes will run as follows:

  1. Rise of the Empire (Eps 1-3 mashup)
  2. “____________” (slight alteration of Rogue One)
  3. A New Hope
  4. The Empire Strikes Back
  5. Return of the Jedi (no Ewoks beating up Stormtroopers!)
  6. Heirs of the Force (Eps 7-8 mashup)

Any suggestions for the title of the new “Episode II”? Obviously Episode II: Rogue One sounds lame. The following possibilities occurred to me:

  • Rebels and Renegades
  • Rogues and Rebels
  • Knaves and Rebels
  • Brigade of Scoundrels / The Scoundrel Brigade / Rogue Brigade / Band of Rogues / Rogue Force
  • Agent Provocateur

I’m partial to something with “Rogues” in it, but am open to whatever.

I’m having a lot of fun mapping this out, because a group of us are gonna watch this “Super Series” later in the year with someone who’s never seen Star Wars before. So, I’m thinking Episodes 2-4 first (as per the reedit numbering) - then the prequel Episode I, explaining Darth Vader - then Eps 5-6. Gotta preserve the Big Reveal in The Empire Strikes Back!!

Oh… these titles… are all terrible 😃 I like DigMod’s title for his R1 edit: Rise of the Rebellion. Dawn of the Rebellion could also work. Ashes of the Republic ? Twilight of the Republic could be great for your PT edit !

Good luck with your edits 😉

Thanks for the responses, guys.

Love the username. However . . .

For Rouge One you should remove the planet title cards,

You really need to stop saying “Rouge,” since I’m pretty sure RO wasn’t about makeup application. You use it repeatedly in your “7-in-1” thread too; drives me bonkers. ☺

(I will say, though, a Vader-centric mashup is in fact one of the best reedit concepts I’ve seen. I’ll look forward to watching it.)

No concern about my Ep2 titling, actually. It’ll have its own opening crawl with Episode II as part of the larger title. I’m also getting keen on having an opening scene, kind of a prologue, between “A long time ago . . .” and the STAR WARS fanfare. I think most, if not all, of these reedits will have that.

What is your plan for ANH and ESB?

For ANH I will–

  • start with Rogue One’s super-cool Vader scene as the prologue
  • cut the Lars household meal scene and replace it with the deleted scene of Biggs and Luke at Anchorhead (yes, I realize that footage is in poor condition but I simply find it more interesting; it’s similar to how most people prefer the “Donner Cut” of Superman II, despite the fact that previously unused footage isn’t on par with the rest)
  • Han shoots first (obviously!!)
  • no Jabba
  • cut the trash compactor scene (I find it boring now)
  • spice up the Obi-Vader duel

And for TESB:

  • Leia does NOT smooch Luke in the infirmary
  • no space slug; they remain hidden inside the asteroid until the Imperial garbage drop
  • slight alterations here and there to make it seem Luke’s on Dagobah for about a year - while the Falcon travels to Bespin at sublight speed over that same length of time

Well, to each their own. I don’t presume they’re “great” - but then neither are most actual Star Wars episode titles, when you think about it. I don’t believe “terrible” is justified here.

See, personally those just don’t do it for me. 《Shrug》 Besides, in RO the Rebel Alliance already exists; RO is the story of a single mission, not the rise of the rebellion.

Ashes of the Republic [or] Twilight of the Republic could be great for your PT edit!

Those are good, I have to admit. Already paid $10 for a Rise of the Empire crawl, though, so I’m stickin’ with it. 😉 Here’s where I got the crawl:

Besides, the very word empire is just “sexier” than republic, y’know?

Good luck with your edits 😉

Thanks.

Omg I just saw that. Now I gotta fix all my posts…

As for the edit, these seem very interesting. I would suggest for the prequels cut all of Ep 1 (except as a prologue of you are making those), one mid movie time jump is enough for an episodic movie and it adds nothing to the story.

Tempting, but I think the end-product would be somewhat dysfunctional. I just ran it through my head and it doesn’t seem to go well, at least as a mental experiment. The first idea that occurred to me was to have the Ep1 segment end with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan having picked Anakin up from Tatooine. But of course then I immediately realized the rest of the movie would leave the gaping question of whatever happened to both Qui-Gon and Darth Maul.

So, I could jump immediately to the Maul-vs-Jedi confrontation on Naboo, but my first impression is that that would feel like something’s missing; like there’s really not much significance to this kid they’ve picked up.

I dunno, I’ll hafta play around with it. Thanks for the feedback, though!

Hmm, this just occurred to me as well. If I negated TPM altogether - where would Obi and Ani ever be introduced by their names??? The name Skywalker is first heard 2/3 of the way into Clones, though Kenobi is heard very early on. However, I’m going to be doing a lot of cutting of scenes and dialogue in which their names are heard, so it’d be better to have them already established using TPM material. And in TPM when Qui-Gon breaks off the fight with Maul and leaps aboard Amidala’s ship, he immediately introduces Anakin and Obi-Wan to each other; says their full names, so that’s a perfect intro.

On the other hand, do you think it would work to simply put their names in the opening crawl…?

My favorite way to use TPM as a prologue is what Octorox did:

Open with logos and “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” Right when it’d normally cut to the STAR WARS logo, instead cut to the wide shot of the duel of the fates (the beginning of the scene where Maul kicks Obi-Wan a few shots in). Throughout the duel, such as when Qui-Gon sits to meditate and when Obi-Wan is trapped behind the laser walls, we flashback to the key events of TPM centering on finding Anakin.

Wow - totally loving that approach. And it fits with my intention to give each episode a pre-fanfare prologue.
Thank you!!!

If I’m not mistaken, is it really Octorox edit or the once very hard to find The Blackened Mantle before Octorox indeed managed to share on the spleen ?

(very interesting 3-1 edit… only if you don’t speak japanese 😃

I’m not sure. I just remember that Octorox did it.

What if you never mention the name “Skywalker” in ep 1? He is just referred to as anakin. I remember only Grevious, the kid, and Windu using the name “skywalker” in ROTS, they could be cut or trimmed. Maybe have a Jedi say in passing “master skywalker…” where anakin isn’t there to suggest to viewers that there is a skywalker, but we don’t know who he is. You could then watch the movie in chronological order (cut obi-wan’s mention took of “anakin” in ANH and ESB).

Episode II: Rise of the Rogue Ones !

(still terrible title but you keep the original title 😃)

Or, for all the people constantly making the very same spelling mistake:

Le Rouge One and the Black

“I have to say that I felt George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.” - James Cameron about Episode VII.

It was an older 3-in-1 edit of mine that used that approach for the prologue called “Rise of Lord Vader”. Unfortunately I was never fully satisfied with that edit and don’t even have the files anymore.

Ok, I didn’t know you made a 3-in-1 edit. My mistake !

CHRONOLOGICAL VIEWING OF THE SAGA

So I was just skimming through AOTC and ROTS to determine where I can drop mentions of “Skywalker.” This can work! Some more alterations to the prequels:

  • No mention of “the prophecy” or Anakin being “the Chosen One”
  • Was toying with nixing all mentions of Padme’s pregnancy - but then thought I could trim all related dialogue so that it’s implied she only has one baby, a girl
  • When Padme’s in labor, cut “she’s medically healthy” and the mention of twins; show only Leia’s birth
  • Eliminate dialogue that refers to Jedi having no attachments to anyone; trim dialogue so that it isn’t implied that Anakin and Padme married in secret
  • Major change: Could VADER be the “(An)other” in TESB-ROTJ???; we never see Leia doing anything with the Force until TLJ, but I’ll be dropping the infamous “Mary Poppins” scene anyway, so there will never be Leia-the-Force-user

In my reedit of ROTJ, when Obi-Wan reveals what really happened, I’ll flash back to two key ROTS scenes: revealing both Luke’s birth and his being hidden on Tatooine. Hmm, I’ll also have to come with a way to cut around Obi-Wan confirming that Leia is “Another.”

For me such changes will both make the entire saga more enjoyable AND allow those unfamiliar with it to watch the whole thing in chronological order without spoilers.
