I was having a discussion at lunch with a few friends, and I've noticed that everyone I've talked to seems to have a very strong opinion on recreational drug use. This got me curious - what are your views on this?

As for me, I think if one is well-informed, with non-pressuring friends in a comfortable environment, and not using anything that could potentially kill you or that is easily addicting, it's not particularly worse than alcohol, and I don't see why certain illegal narcotics are as strictly illegal as they are, marijuana being the major standout in that subject.

Hopefully I'm not accidentally violating any rules with this (haven't looked at the forum rules in a long time) and hopefully I don't offend anyone, but I'm curious - what do you think?

What you do with your own body is nobodys business but yours. I don't really have a problem with people do drugs, whether it be minor ones such as marijuana or heavier stuff like acid, so long as they control themselves; thats the problem with the more heavier stuff, you can easily loose control. Personally i have indulged in marijuana on a frequent and infrequent basis; i really have no idea why this stuff is still considered illegal, being no different than alcohal. Its always interesting to see how different regions treat it--when i lived in Vancouver it was smoked with the regularity and indifference of cigarrettes, and the police treated it more or less as such.

The problem is, using illicit substances means funding into a system that is far more corrupt than politicians or oil barons. Unless you're living on a commune growing your own stuff for your own personal use, then you've likely gotten it from somebody whose business involves theft, extortion, murder, and terror. Forgetting the whole "body is a temple" mindset (which is noble, but unlegislatable), this is the strongest case for not doing them AND for working to have the laws changed.

I'm in that freaky minority who doesn't do drugs and has no desire to start, but nonetheless wants them legalized. Remove the criminal element from it and half of our society's problems would go away. Sure there would still be addicts, but I hypothesize they'd be fewer, because there would be less of a desire for anti-social types to engage in the "bad" behavior to begin with. If an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, dump more resources into education. If the common person had the level of education about some of these substances that I have, more people would eschew them as I do.

Then maybe if we didn't have our law enforcement, coast guard and troops fighting a war on drugs, we might actually be able to focus more of their energy on the assholes who actually want to kill us for existing.

I took all manner of drugs, big n small, throughout all of my 20's and gave everything up when I hit 30 (was getting a bit boring by then anyway) and to quote the late great Bill Hicks - "never robbed andbody, never beat anybody, never killed anybody, never raped anybody, didn't lose one job....laughed my aass off...and went about my day!"

I'm of that minority viewpoint as well. I don’t believe that any of us should waste our lives away with mind-altering substances (life is too amazing for us to ignore it like that), but if a particular person does no harm to other people, and abuses his body on private property, and doesn’t expect me to fork over money to clean up their pathetic lives, then I say that they can do as they like.

I in no way condone drug usage. It is very foolish and self-destructive. But I think there is a lot in the whole forbidden fruit thing ADM mentioned. When you tell someone they can't have something, it becomes even more desirable. If drugs were legalized, it is very likely a lot less people would be inclined to start using them in the first place. Of course there is no way to know what exactly would happen if they were legalized, one thing is sure, you would have a lot less illegal drug traffic and everything else that goes with it. The market would crash the second Wal-Mart added them next to their tocacco section.

I've never used any drugs and I have no desire to do so (I do drink alcohol). Still, I want the choice to use drugs or not so I think drugs should be legalized. (I'm from the Netherlands so I can smoke a joint legally if I want to)

Well, if you look at it in a kind of comparison to prostitution, it would be better off to be legalized. Personally I have no desire to do drugs, but I do feel that it would be better off that they be legalized. In areas where prostitution is legal, the prostitutes must have a license which states that they do not have any kind of STD and therefore it is legal for them to continue their work. Also, many teenagers see it as "cool" to break the law and so many might not start drugs if it was legal. Either way, if drugs were made legal, they could at least be used in a safer way.

I have been observing this thread since its inception a couple of days ago and, I must say, I am none too surprised that the majority here are for legalizing marijuana. I am also for legalizing marijuana. I think that, when ingested in its pure form, it is not so bad a drug. Keep in mind I have never tried it, nor do I want to. But I do think that Alchohol is a much worse drug. Simply put, I have never had to fight someone high on marijuana. I have had to tussle with scads of drunks though. I also think that we the taxpayers are spending billions of dollars a year on a losing battle against marijuana. I do not think that legalizing them will "save teens" because they will try it regardless and, more than likely, it will still be illegal to them since they are under 21 and that may be the cut-off point in most states. Alcohol is attributed to be the number one killer of teens across America and that is a fact. However, despite this I am in no way for legalizing all forms of drugs. Marijuana can be grown, harvested, regulated, and taxed. Methamphetamine, crack, heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, etc. are all lethal and dangerous drugs that nobody should be allowed to have. I have seen first hand the destruction of a person just a mere couple of years after they have their first hit of crystal methamphetamine. They are skinny and pale, have no job, are very close to death, everyone they love has abandoned them, and they are petty criminals who prey on you and I. They'll even steal a child's bike from your front yard if they thought they could make $20 on it. Don't be fooled, many forms of drugs are just too dangerous for everybody to even touch. If you all could only see what these people put into their bodies, it would make the average person sick. I dealt with one meth cooker a couple months back who was bragging to me that the reason his ice sold so much better was because of his secret ingredient of radiator coolant and nail polish remover. Marijuana needs to be leaglized for many reasons:
1. In it's pure form, it is not that bad. Notice I say "in it's pure form". Modern day black market marijuana is usually laced with other things to make it harder. The marijuana of today is much more potent that what folks were smoking in the 60's and 70's.
2. Taxes, taxes, taxes. We, as citizens, could stand to make tons of money a year from various taxes placed on marijuana. Not only that you associate everything that a big busines can contribute. Property taxes, sales taxes, creating more jobs, the general impact on our economy would be tremendous and positive, to say the least.
3. Help the justice system. Legaliing marijuana would free up at least 40% of the justice system to focus on other crimes which are much more serious. Plus, all of the many deaths a year related to the black market sales of marijuana would cease and free up the street patrolling officers to be in your neighborhood more, rather than stuck processing evidence, arrests, and everything else a marijuana arrest has with it.
I see no other better solution than the complete legalization of marijuana. Write your congressman.

I'd say more like 99.9999999%.

If they were lacing it with some industrial chemical you'd be able to smell it on the bud or taste it in the smoke right away.... And like that complete fucking asshole Rob said - they have no reason to sprinkle blow or meth on it - those things aren't free. I've probably bought about 6 billion worth of shit in my lifetime - I have never gotten laced weed.

Dealers have no interest in alienating their clients. When someone wants a bag - they want weed. If they want blow or meth they'll buy those separately (and the vast majority of the time from a completely different dealer. Most weed dealers don't touch any of that other, harder shit.) Adding shit to weed doesn't make it "harder" or make those who smoke it want more of it - it would freak them out, give them a bad high, and cause them to never go to that dealer again.
