Recommended editing software for Windows

What would you guys recommend for editing on a new lower to medium end Win7 PC? Between Vegas, Premiere etc. I wasn't sure what to check out.

Right now I'm used to Final Cut Pro after having used it in school, but I just hated the amount of limitations Macs have.

Is there also a cheap edition that has a good interface, doesn't lose too many features and doesn't require a monster custom built machine?

Right now I have a Compaq C5826 (3.2 ghz processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, 64bit Windows 7) which of course isn't the greatest but should be enough to do some little projects here and there.

RE your Final Cut question there is Final Cut Express but it has practically the same interface and as you can expect a lot less options.

I actually found Express paradoxically more difficult to use too.

Which is odd because way back yonder I actually enjoyed using Photoshop Elements to the point that I kept it for as long as Apple let me even after upgrading to CS.

I'd rather edit on iMovie than FC Express both have extreme limitations but if with a few workarounds you can get almost as much out of iMovie with less effort and it comes free with some machines.

I bow to Ady's superior knowledge of Window World (I haven't had a Windows machine in the Chateau for twelve years) but there are some cool free Linux editing programs out there.

I gave most of them a try but having forked out for FC I've stuck with it.

Cinelerra's available for the Mac too I believe.

That's every bit as good as FC Express, if not better in terms of options and it's free.

Depending on what you are doing, Avisynth might be worth looking at.  It requires some scripting knowledge but it is configurable beyond belief.  I'm not saying it is better than an editor with an easy to use gui but there are things avisynth can do that the others can't.  It's free too.

Thanks for the advice, right now I've downloaded the Vegas Platinum suite demo and am going to go around for a test drive.

I need to grab Avisynth and start learning it due to the sheer amount of stuff people have been able to do with it. I'm not very good with scripting though.

It's really tough to bounce back to PC editing after 3 years+ of FCP on a Mac. I've always used PCs, but my school went Apple so I had the interface of Final Cut ingrained into my brain.

Hi, my first foray into the tech forum. I have a nagging question about frame rate editing:

Is there a commercial program that will remove, say, every 15th frame and automatically smooth the audio? I'm not talking about a PAL type speed-up or slow-down of the whole shmeal with the audio raising or lowering in pitch, I mean pulling out frames and associated audio at certain regular intervals or where it is especially possible and using morphing/blending type tech to smooth it.

The goal would be to reduce run-time (or in some instances increase it by doubling frames) and increase pace tension or drama without creating choppiness and distortion in the image or audio. :)
