Rebels Fanedit Ideas

Is Rebels salvageable? I feel like the problems with this series are too fundamental to be saved with fanediting. Mainly its focus on Ezra, who is blander than the act of eating bread and lettuce while watching Solo: A Star Wars Story. Really, it’s a show I never asked for (I wanted a show about Han, Luke, Leia, obviously), but there are things to like in it, and I’d like to be able to enjoy them without all the other crap. It also provides closure for TCW, following its premature cancellation. Any ideas on how to reassemble this into something worth watching?

I didn’t really care for it, nor the 2008 Clone Wars series which gets so much love. Rebels, though, seemed more ‘Disney Channel’ to me, and so I did not stick with it through to the end.

I hope ‘Resistance’ is a stylized animation, not more fugly 3D people. 2003-4 Clone Wars Microseries is where it’s at.

Sorry, irrelevant, irreverent comment over.

Resistance is cell-shaded 3d.

I don’t think that is irrelevant! This could be a good place to discuss the animation side of things and how it could apply to a show like Rebels.

To address Resistance, yeah, like Snooker said, it apparently is going to be 3D that mimics the style of traditional animation. I’m very skeptical but no harm in trying new things either. And yeah, the Clone Wars Microseries was great. I think obviously the animation side of the franchise is not going to appeal to everyone, but I also think there is a lot to like as well. And I think a lot of younger fans really love it, so even if it’s not what we wanted, there are others fans who really love it.

I do think that Rebels is far from perfect though. While I haven’t really thought of doing it myself anytime soon, I do think someone could possibly do a series of edits for the series. I’m not sure if you could make it a series of tv-to-movie edits like smudger is doing for Clone Wars, you could treat it like a miniseries or just shorter seasons, combining three episodes into one episode maybe.

For me, I wouldn’t want to cut out all of the goofy stuff, but there is a lot that could be cut out.
I also think it would be worth trying to change things, like [SPOILERS] kill of Sabine’s mom and brother with some rotoscope magic or something. And while there are a few filler episodes, a lot of the filler often ends up playing a role later down the road, like the use of the Purgills in the final episode.

It would be interesting to go through and see what could be cut for starters, and see what narrative changes you would like to make, if those changes are actually feasible.

Given all the previous series of this style have been 3D, I expected no less for Resistance.

Exactly. Irreverence is relevant in this thread.

Really, I’m not worried so much about cutting out filler, which one can already easily do by skipping episodes, as I am with improving the actually decent bits.

Nope. That’s why I made this thread. I fear it’s not salvageable, but really want it to be.

I’ve never watched the whole thing through, and I don’t plan to ever do that, but I’m sure you could make an hour long short movie fanedit if you select an interesting plot line, and cut out all the dumb stuff.

Hot take: The Force Awakens is in no way, shape or form a rehash or remake of A New Hope.
It’s no more derivative than the average sequel, and is certainly less derivative than the prequels.

It’s just a tv series. Watch the good episodes, don’t watch the bad, no real need for an edit here.

“I have to say that I felt George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.” - James Cameron about Episode VII.

Anakin - you say there things to like in Rebels - yet don’t mention what they are…

‘I feel like the problems with this series are too fundamental to be saved with fanediting’ - yet then post ‘Any ideas on how to reassemble this into something worth watching?’

Why do you feel the show requires ‘salvaging’? Just Ezra? What is ‘all the other crap’?

What are your ideas? Other than to seemingly minimise the character of Ezra?

This is a thread on looking for input for a Fan Edit on Rebels, yes? (I imagine that’s why you’ve posted it in the SW Fan Edit section) - yet the OP reads as a lazy shitpost criticising the show.

Maybe re-tooling it with some more info from yourself - and making it something along the lines of a ‘Suggestions and ideas for possible Rebels Fan Edits’ may attract more of what you’re looking for - in trying to make Rebels a better / more enjoyable show?

SparkySywer has an intriguing idea in taking which plotlines (and content) worked for you and making a short Edit out of them - maybe there could be several depending on what you enjoyed/interested about it…

Why don’t you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don’t you dig how beautiful it is out here? And say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Honestly, I’m not sure.

Nothing. That’s why I created this thread.

I guess you’re right. It’s current title makes it seems like a topic better suited for General Star Wars Discussion. I’ll change it right away.

I just remembered how everyone thought the Seventh Sister was Barriss back when she was revealed. How 'bout we roll with that? I can’t imagine a more perfect role for Barriss than an inquisitor. Just change a few lines so that she’s identified as Barriss and add some personal drama between her and Ahsoka. There’s plenty of quips we could replace here.

As for Ezra, he’s unfortunately the one character who’s in every single episode. Maybe we could dub him to have a radically different personality, in the same vein as an abridged series. I think that could work. Any ideas what his new personality could be?

I personally think Rebels has a lot more potential than TCW because that show is pretty much all over the place. TCW has the benefit of somewhat self-contained arcs to make “movies” out of, but the episodes that make up those arcs still feel episodic when mashed together (often jumping from one character to another). Rebels has a much more consistent progression for the characters and the story, so you could easily just trim down the fat and have a fine streamlined version of the series.

As to whether it’s movies or episodes, maybe the best way to structure it would just be to not worry about the structure. Like, season 1 is a two hour movie, while season 2 is two movies, and season three is a few hour-long episodes, etc. Whatever works.

That’s an excellent point.

What if we made Ezra into Bodhi from Rogue One? Okay, that’s kinda dumb. But what isn’t dumb is making Draven from Rogue One into Kallus. Hell, you don’t even need to change anything beyond Rogue One’s credits (unless he’s referred to by name at some point). It’d be one more connection to make this story feel relevant. Oh, oh what if Ezra was Wedge Antilles?!! I’ll see myself out…

I think the story should start with the Ghost crew already part of the larger rebellion, as it would allow shifting the focus away from Ezra, and to a lesser extent the crew as a whole. I think Hera ought to be the primary focus, alongside Kanan and Sabine. Zeb would also be pushed into the background, although less out of hate and more out him not being relevant, although this might hurt Kallus’s arc. I think The Siege of Lothal would be a nice place to start.

Ezra’s role would be reduced as much as possible. I wonder if it would be possible to even cut out him being a Jedi entirely (and the inquisitors while we’re at it). It’d be strange for a teenage Jedi to have a small background role. Still, if he’s not a Jedi, the question becomes what to do with Maul. Would their relationship still work without the Force? Since his role would be so reduced, and the plot of his missing parents cut, maybe he could just be Kanan and Hera’s (adopted) son? It would be a convenient way to explain why he’s around without having to do much. Hell, since he’s adopted anyways (there’s no way that thing in the finale is part twilek), it wouldn’t really be changing the story at all. He’d just have been adopted at a younger age.

^I think the perfect edit would just be 2.5 hours of only Ezra, personally. Cut out every shot Ezra isn’t in, and put together the leftovers as a film. Would be awesome.

Author
Time

^Or, perhaps, something akin to the Clone Wars TV-to-movie edits, but this time focusing on a different theme or two throughout. The beginning is largely Ezra’s story plus the introduction to the crew of the Ghost, but from then I could see you focusing on other characters or pairings more directly to make more solid movies, until the finale.

Author
Time

My “All Ezra All The Time: The Edit” idea was a joke, but I do think theme/pairing based edits of Rebels wouldn’t really work as well as they do in TCW edits. I think you would seriously have to keep all of the Ghost crew together to make a cohesive film imo. I think a movie should stand alone to some extent regardless of whether or not it’s a part of an overall franchise/series. Having one entire movie be about two members of an ensemble where the rest are pushed to the back/un-introduced is just off to me. It would have to be about the whole group together.

An easy small thing one could do to make Ezra a smaller part, if one really wanted to, is just have him be introduced AFTER the rest of the Ghost crew, with less focus on him after that introduction. That way, he doesn’t come off as the main character. He becomes a device for Kanan/Hera/Sabine/Zeb’s development as opposed to vice versa.

Author
Time

You could probably pull together a compelling enough narrative of the Ghost’s crew without Ezra in order to make a decent Rebels movie, then have his introduction later, perhaps reframed more as part of Kanan’s story.

Author
Time

Well we do have footage of Ezra meeting the rest of the crew, so introducing him later might be possible.
