Okay so are you seeking the impressions of time travelers, or the reflections from people's 37 year-old memories?

You don't visit the preservations section much, do you Jasper?

I thought this here site was fer reg'lar curmudgeoning, not yer fancy downloadin' & torrenting 'n such!

You kids!

EDIT to DarkTech: That's a really cool site!  "Sourced from the legendary pre-Episode IV bootleg"?!?!?!  Neat!  But saddening that there's never been a home release!

I never mentioned downloads of any kind, if you go to the preservations section you'll find lots of information regarding the mono mix, it's been very well documented.

Okay, so I guess the question being posed is "Which of these disembodied snippets of sound do you prefer, with no way of knowing how they actually work when integrated into the film?"

Yeah but then I'd be jeopardizing my cred as dilettante.

If you're familiar with THE STORY OF STAR WARS album, you're familiar with that voice.

Nothing on that site works....on Chrome or firefox.

Unfortunately Russ used ActiveX for calling Windows Media Player. It works ONLY on IE. On other browsers you have to check the source code to get the path to the mp3 file

Definitely the one in the Dolby mix. Why? Well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The realistic soundfield created for the Dolby Stereo in the the Death Star assault as a whole was mostly trashed in the Mono. Gone was all those wonderful signal distortions in communication that were very reminiscent of those heard in THX 1138.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

This is all, of course, hilarious when combined with your avatar

I'm probably the only one on this board who will be miffed if the otherwise perfect ultra-HD, exquisitely color-timed, glorious release of the OT doesn't have a restored original mono track.

Not because I prefer it in Star Wars--I've never heard it in SW!  But because I seriously think stereo is still just a goofy gimmick, and that sound directionality in movies is always distracting, as opposed to immersive.

You've never heard 'Apocalypse Now' at the cinema have you?

Saw Redux at the Waverly during the week before it closed.

And as far as I'm concerned, if you REMEMBER being WOWED by the stereo effect (I assume you're talking about the carpet bomb cascade scene), that is proof that you were taken out of the movie for a moment so as to appreciate the AWESOMENESS!!!!11!1

In other words, you were distracted.

I can't quite see the downside of being blown away by the artistry of film but each to his own. Also, given that AP starts on total black and the sound is only thing there is, I can't see what it is a distraction from?

I've stood agog at the viceral texture of Van Gogh's paint. But obviously a flat print is the superior way to experience his art, then I wouldn't have been distracted by all that beautiful brushwork ;-)

By the way, do you find life itself to be a distraction from reality? Given that you hear in stereo.

Anyway, I love Mono too, when it's appropriate to the film/album and the artist's intent. I've no desire to hear pre-stereo films beefed up to 5.1 or the like, I'd rather hear the original. But if a film was conceived with decophonic sound then that's the way it should be.
