Curious how this first reviewer doesn't mention the changes that Lucas made that alter the story, such as Greedo shooting first and Jabba-slug replacing Jabba-fat guy. We could care less about fixing some of the effects shots, that's not the problem. The problem is when these changes alter the narrative.

As long as Lucas is taking my money, he's entitled to my opinion. I and millions of other fans across the world have made him what he is today. He's a successful filmmaker because of us, and he's a billionaire because of us. I know he doesn't give a damn about my desire for the original cuts of the film to be on DVD, but since I am buying the "Special Editions" on DVD, I can criticize decisions that he makes that I do not agree with.

I knew the petition wasn't going to do any good because I believe Lucas' mind was made up a long time ago. No amount of begging or pleading was going to change that.

As a paying customer, I have a right to complain if the service is substandard. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

It's a pity that even a german like me can better read and understand English than IDIOT BASHER does.
Especially his second link is a pro for the release of the Original versions.
And the guy who writes is is a gentleman, who says Lukas is doing things wrong but we have no right to hate him. That's right. Many people who have written their opinion on these sides don't hate Lukas. They are asking for a favour. If granted we are happy. If not we have to live with it. And have to get the bootlegs. But why hate Lukas?
OK. There will always be people who react like this, but they are a minority. If you don't believe me Idiot Basher, then read the pages of originaltrilogy.com.

The first link Idiot Basher presents is written by a man who defends GL. Please go on. Let this guy do it. There is no reason to hate Lukas. This guy is right. Where he isn't right is when he compares our intention, to get the OTs with telephones without wire and CD-players that do not sound like Grammophons. Sorry, but there is a big difference. If I like an old telephone with a wire, I can still buy it. I'm still buying vinyl records, because I like them more than CDs. And for good reasons more and more artists tend to release their new albums additionally on vinyl. That is because the record industry has realized something that Lukas has not yet understood: What the customers want creates the market.

And to come to and, IDIOT B. hating Mr. Lukas and publishing this has nothing to do with these sites. www.originaltrilogy.com is a forum for the people who would like to see the Originals on DVD. Their petition may be hopeless but not stupid. What you call stupid is part of democracy. Originaltrilogy.com is also a forum for all Star Wars Fans, and a good one. It's a shame that people like you come here like a bad teacher and want to tell us what to do and what not to do. Tell us your opinion IDIOT BASHER, but do not act like the guys you want to bash.

Basher, you're the tool here.

I loved this line from the end of the second article...
Quote

Lucas doesn't owe you anything so don't hate him.

How the hell does the dipshit author of this article figure that Lucas doesn't owe us anything?!? We made him who he is. Without the fans, he's just another hack director doing BS studio B-grade projects. Without our money and our devotion, Lucas would have been nothing. Read that carefully... N-O-T-H-I-N-G.

I don't hate Lucas, I just don't respect his decision and his claim that we don't need the OT because it's not how he envisioned it. Why did he release it then? What kind of director releases a half finished project? And if you want to go back and retool it, fine, go ahead and do it. You have that right. But we have the right to see the version that we grew up to love and existed for two decades before your first set of touch ups.

SW:ANH is on the AFI Top 100 list as one of the best films ever made. But the name is followed by "1977" not "1997". And this list was put out after the SEs came out. So that alone should tell you which version is better.

Well excuse me if I don't jump on the OT bandwagon. I could care less about Top 100 lists, or anything like that. What I care about is that George has achieved his ultimate goal and I praise him for it. It is true that he wouldn't be able to make prequals or even the SE without us, but without him we wouldn't have Star Wars in the first place, did you think about that? He could have kept it all to himself and not shared it with the rest of the world if he wanted too. I think he has full right to make decisions about HIS creations. After all when you paid for those movie tickets it became HIS money didn't it? The SE's are the better versions because they are what he envisioned. He gave his reasons why he wasn't able to release them that way back then because it wasn't possible. If you had bothered to watch the documentary's on the OT release in 1995, the first time it was Remastered for VHS and the SE VHS releases, both Gold and Silver Widescreen editions, you would have realized that. Wether your complaining about the added effects, or the narrative changes, they really don't effect the overall story that much. It's the exact same story, in fact. And if you really want the OT that badly, go buy it on VHS, they still sell the 1995 release versions. I've been watching these movies since I was a kid in the 80's and I've always loved them, the SE's made them that much more special for me because I actually got to see them in theatres. You people whining and carrying on like this just ruins it for every other SW fan, and you give us all a bad name.

And yes, I do have a right to talk to you like that, this isn't about who's more mature then who, its about giving George the respect he deserves. So shut your traps, you only have 50,000 out of 235,000,000 Americans, and 7 Billion world citizens, who are all potential Star wars Fans, it will get you...nowhere....period.

What about George giving us the respect we deserve? We still are the ones that gave him the ability to make these films. The trilogy wouldn't exist at all. It would have been a single movie that did jack at the box office.

Like I said, he has every right to do what he wants with his movies. We'd just like to have the original version preserved on DVD in case of an overzealous VCR.

And, no, the 1995 Faces edition is no longer on the market. They were pulled by LFL in 1996 pending the release of the SE in theaters. If you are seeing it in retail stores, then they are selling it in violation of LFL edict. They can be purchased used from eBay, but, as with any auction, actually winning is never a guarantee.

I do have my copies of the OT. Both the 1990 and 1995 releases as well as my 1997 SE release. I just worry because when VHS reaches a certain age or number of playbacks it suffers from magnetic dropout as well as fraying which causes VCRs to eat the tape. I just want to have a copy on DVD (I'd prefer an officially licensed copy) of the OT in non-SE format so I can show my kids the whole story. Not just the SE. I'd like them to see it the way I did. I can show them almost any other movie that has ever been made on DVD in its original version, even ET (and if it's not available, it likely will be in the near future). So why can't I do this with SW? That's the only movie I can't do that with and, apparently, never will be able to.

Is that good enough for you? I tried to keep the whining down to a minimum, for your sake.

I like that someone who supposedly hates people who complain uis stupid enough to waste their time to register on a message board supporting something they hate and then complains about it.

GL can make 10 special editions for all I care, more power to him. But by saying the Original versions aren't real and don;t exist is like taking pictures of your old girlfriends and photoshopping your wifes face over top so you can pretend that you've always been together. Its arrogant and kind of pathetic.

For someone who claims to love SW, idiot basher your quick to let a big piece of it be cast aside. Because essientially you're arguing that the SW trilogy didn;'t really exist until 1997, inwhich case i think GL owes us a lot of our money back from that 20 years of test screening rough cuts and market research he did with all those video releases and theatrical rereleases he did with his unfinished comprimised work.

Who benefits from a piece of film history being erased? How about we give the mona lisa some bigger tits and burn the original, she'll look better anyways so stop your whining.

And the 1997 version is not the definitive version either, its just another rough cut, the supposedly finished version is coming in 2007 for the 30th anniversary, so these SE dvds you crave, thats not the real SW, so when the new ones come out, I think you should snap your 1997 rough cuts in half because thats not Lucas' vision.

Quote

What I care about is that George has achieved his ultimate goal and I praise him for it.

Which is?

Quote

He gave his reasons why he wasn't able to release them that way back then because it wasn't possible.

Yes its great that the technology to make Luke scream as he fell in cloud city was finally created in the 90s, as well as the getting over the technical hurdle of how to make Greedo shoot first, or giving Luke that great line "You were lucky to get out of there" inplace of the technically inferior line "You're luck you don;'t taste very good". The wonders of technology have finally allowed these special moments to be brought to life as GL originally intended.

ANd you know what?

What GL intended is completely irrenlevant, what he achieved is. Once you release something into theatres the audience becomes an active participant in the expirence. What directors intend has no baring at all. Every bad movie ever made was somebodies vision, it doesn't mean they didn't suck crap. Maybe the directors feels were hurt but you know what? Too bad. Risk is part of the game, and if you can't handle the fact that some people will not like your movie, then tough balls, you shouldn't be a director.

Quote

Wether your complaining about the added effects, or the narrative changes, they really don't effect the overall story that much.

'that much' is such a relative term and it only proves the point further. In filmmaking every frame must be scrutinized (and from interviews GL agrees) and nothing is done without purpose. Why should I have to overlook something while watching a movie, why should i have to put blinders on?

Apparently there is no getting through to your brains. George says that the SE's are the final versions, and yes they what the movies would have originally been, but there was no way he could do the things that he did in the SE back then, don't you get it? SE is the final version of the films. The Version they were supposed to be, so yes maybe he does owe you money for showing you a incomplete work for 20 years. Thats your prerogative if you further wish to show everyone you have no life and spend too much time thinking about the OT. First of all, most of you treat the SE like a set of brand new movies, they're not, they just have added scenes, that's it, scenes that George would have had in there if they had digital technology back then. Face it, the OT is gone and you'll never see it in a different format other then VHS. So you better take care of your tapes and VCR's because your whining, will solve, NOTHING. All of the arguements are based on your own selfish desires. You don't deserve respect, you're not the artist, you're the audience. I think I've said enough here, long live the Special Editions, the FINAL and BEST versions of the films.

And changing a photograph by replacing the Face of someone is far different then making the ultimate version of a movie, that you wanted it to originally be anyway. If you replace the face of your girlfriend with your wife, does that mean it was supposed to originally be her in that Photo? I don't think so.

And my final word is, that if George had been able to make these scenes to what he orginally wanted, then the OT would be the SE. So stop thinking you know all about George because you don't. He was a man who was able to finish his work and continue it, I bet he doesn't give a rats arse about how much money it makes as long as he completes the sextology.

May the Force be with you, whiners.

And what about the changes that could of been achieved then like greedo shooting first? I hate to break it to you, but there is no GL masterplan for SW, he's essenitally making this up as he goes, and contradicts himself on many occasions. In one interview he will say he always planned to make the pT, in another he'll claim that he never had any intent to make it and the episode numbers were just an homage to old serials.

No its exactly the same. Its pretending you never made a "mistake" and acting like what you do and believe now is the way you've always thought. Like I said its not that he made the SE, thats fine. Its pretending the OV does not exist.

This statement alone shows how little you know about George. He's planning an ultimate version. The SE was just another step in the process. It has been said over and over again.

Just because you're obviously too young to remember the original movies and the SEs were the first time you saw them in theaters doesn't mean your version is any more important than the versions we do remember seeing in theaters.

And, no, you won't "get through" to us. Obviously this site is not for you. Go off to your little non-OT fantasy world and leave us alone. You're not welcome here.

Now that I've figured out that I'm arguing with a bunch of 40-50 year old cronies this is what I have to say.

1. There is nothing on the Internet about The Ultimate Edition except a possible amount of changes that I have read on TheForce.net which is not all proven and is mostly a fan's wishful thinking.
2. George has never said he was going to do an Ultimate Edition, ever. This is all fan based decreed news spread across the Internet to spread disillusion. What Lucas is going to do is actually make a series based on the time period between Ep's III and IV, the Jedi Purge, which is more believable, and more frequently mentioned on the net. There was talk of a series before TPM even started filming.
3. And if they do do an Ultimate Edition, will you continue to whine? It doesn't matter apparently because he will never release the original's on DVD. All of you should just get over it and realize that your time is over. The 70's have ended, the 80's have come and gone. Quit living in the past. The time is now. The SE's are the final versions and even if they do make an Ultimate Edition, you'll just continue to whine about how different it is from the SE's.
4. You'll buy the DVD's anyway, no matter what you say you know you won't be able to resist. The only way this could work is if you boycott buying the SW DVD's which is less likely to work then this petition. George will never even look at this site. All he cares about his finishing his creation, wether you all like it or not.
5. I actually believe myself that both version should be released together, simply for preferable reference, because one, people like you make every other SW fan look like the stupidest people on the planet, and two, because you wouldn't open your mouths and crap wouldn't come out making SE lovers like myself angry.
6. And that's all I have to say about that.

None of this is meant to offend by the way, Mr. Jay. Go ahead and delete my account if you choose. This is my final word anyway.

Basher, you tool, read the article that's linked by R2-G2 above. It does talk about the Ultimate Editions that Bill Hunt has insider knowledge to be in the works. Bill Hunt of thedigitalbits does not post idiot fanboy rumors because he's above all that. He's been following this news for a couple of years now from insiders because TDB.com is a very well-respected site by both fans and the industry and they tend to get the inside scoop before most other sites.

Deal with it, you are wrong. You are living in a fantasy world, like you claim we do, if you believe that the SE is the final word.

Or are you too immature to admit that you can be wrong?

And you obviously have no iota of willpower in your feeble character if you think that there is not a person on this site who can say no to the SE on DVD. Have you never been able to say no before? Don't you ever stand firm in your convictions? Or are you the sort to cave in to anything and therefore believe that everyone else shares this same lack of conviction? Watch me say no. You just solidified my resolve. Thank you. You have finally proven yourself to have some semblance of value in this forum.
