I think I can speak for everyone here when I say that we agree with you that cops should go on trial for murder when they do so, and I also agree with you that cops get away with a lot more than any normal citizen could dream of getting away with. The problem is, you lump all of the good cops in with the bad cops since they wear the same uniform. It's no different than saying all Christians are like the Westboro Baptist Church, or that all Muslims are like the terrorists, or that all football players are like Ray Rice
If there really are good cops out there they must be in hiding. Truely good cops would rat out the bad cops and get them kicked out. If Cops want me to respect them then they would clean things up and insist that cops be held to the same standard as your average citizen but that is not what happens. Cops cover for each other and the ones that are not racist are on the take and working for the gangs. They are nothing but thugs with badges. I'll respect cops once I start seeing them go to jail for their crimes and stop gunning people down in the streets.
Until then I will regard them as the enemy of every decent citizen who doesn't want to be murdered or shaken down on the streets.
I agree cops covering for bad cops is and can a big problem. However, for a cop to turn in another cop, isn't easy. For them, it is like turning in a brother. They have to trust each other with their lives. If they can't trust each other, they can't do their jobs. Its a lot easier for for us to say that cops should turn in bad cops then it is for a cop to so. I do wish there was an easy way to change that culture, to make it easier for cops to do the right thing. I am sure many of them wish it was too. Still this doesn't excuse the sick and offensive things you say about cops, DrCrow. I am very seriously considering putting on ignore until you apologize for saying this sh**.
So you are saying that it's okay for cops to cover up for each other because they feel close. So you are in fact saying that cops should be above the law and allowed to do whatever they want with no penalty because they are cops and us lowly citizen can't question anything they do.
that is not what I said. Imagine you knew that the right thing to do was was to turn your brother in for a crime he commited(I am not saying your brother actually committed any crime. I don't even know if you have a brother.) But what if you knew that the if you did turn your brother in, all your other brothers and sisters would not want to speak to you ever again or have anything to do with you. Imagine if turning your brother in for a crime he committed would also mean the rest of your family wouldn't want anything to do with you and that none of your family would ever trust you again. Imagine if it meant you might have to quit your job as well. You still know what the right thing to do is, but it wouldn't be easy for you to do, would it? That was my point.
I just want them to face the same penalties for crime that the rest of us face
I do too.
but right now there is no way to bring them to justice because they cover for each other so until that changes I will not trust them.
but I bet if you go home and find that your house was burglerized, or that you that, God forbid, one of your family members was assaulted/raped/murdered, that your first call would be to the cops, wouldn't it?
Here is a thought why don't we have a federal agency that's only job is to investigate dirty cops
I am not sure I'd have a problem with that, but some might say it violates states rights. Perhaps each state should have such an agency.
and make the penalty for violating a citizen's rights life in prison? Dirty cops should go away for life and if it comes out that other cops knew about the corruption and didn't say anything they go away for life to. That way their desire to not spend the rest of their life in prison may outweigh their feelings of brotherhood.
for life? everytime? no matter what exactly the violation is? no matter what? You have heard of the eighth amemdment right?(the one against cruel and unusual punishment)
Look Maybe you should ignore me since we are never going to agree. You think cops are some higher form of life who the law shouldn't apply to and that anyone who says any cop is dirty is evil.
That's not what I said. I don't believe they are any higher form of life. But I don't believe they are any lower either, which is what you basically said they were. The law should diffinitely apply to them, but so should the rights and freedoms that we all have. No, I don't think anyone that says any cop is dirty is evil. There are dirty cops, nothing wrong with saying so. But it is wrong to say that they are all dirty, and it is sick, offensive, and evil to say that they should all be killed(and that you cheer everytime a cop gets killed).
I don't think a feeling of brotherhood is a good excuse for covering up a crime
never said it was, it just makes a cop exposing a crime another cops does very difficult.
and I think cops should face the same penalties as every other citizen when they commit a crime. You think they shouldn't.
no, I actually think they should face the same penalties, but they are also entitled to same presumption of innocence, the same rights that we have when we are accused of a crime, and that they, like we, are not guilty until proven so beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
I like you Warb but on this one issue we are never going to agree so I guess if you can't over look that then you should ignore me.
We shall see.
