Meh.

is it any better that the PT movies?

It’s better than the prequels overall, but I’d take just about any key dramatic sequence or saber battle from the prequels over the key sequences in TFA. Nothing in TFA feels particularly weighty and important. Tough to get into it without spoilers.

AOTC 2.5/10
ROTS 2/10
SW 10/10
ESB 9.5/10
ROTJ 7/10*
TFA 7/10**

*Very hard for me to assign a grade to ROTJ. It has major flaws, has many examples of bad filmmaking, but also has some very entertaining and iconic parts. And it’s the conclusion (well, I guess not anymore) to the greatest story ever told.

**I’m still processing TFA. It will take many views and months (years?) to really process it. I gave it the same grade as ROTJ. Do I like it as much as ROTJ? I don’t know yet.

Anyone remember different camera angles from ROTJ?

Two and a half stars out of four.

Best way for me to quantify the movie with the prequels that get 1/4, ANH & ESB which are 4/4, and Return of the Jedi 3/4.

I give it a 9/10. Far better than the prequels, and better even than ROTJ. Incredibly close to being as good as EP IV and V imho.

I haven’t seen TFA nearly enough times to integrate it with my overall ranking in any meaningful way, but my early impression is that its across-the-board sense of enthusiasm might give it a slight edge over ROTJ, where everyone but Mark Hamill and Ian McDiarmid seemed to be going through the motions. Again, it’s way too early to make that call, but that’s how I’m feeling right this moment.

I agree with this, including the ranking. I don’t know if I’d put it so close to IV and V, if only because of [REDACTED], but still…what a great movie.

9 out of 10, or 92/100, or 91.7%. Groovy stuff, I am pleased!

After seeing it again I feel comfortable to rank. Keep in mind that nostalgia (and fan edits, to an extent) factor into my ratings for the PT). This is all subject to change depending on my mood of course (except for ANH and ESB, which honestly should be A++ because they are my two favorite movies ever).

TPM: C+
AOTC: C
ROTS: B
ANH: A+
ESB: A+
ROTJ: B+
TFA: A

To be fair, the prequels make almost any movie look like a masterpiece of film-making, and with that said you can imagine my opinion of the prequels. Are we allowed negative numbers when rating those things?

ANH:90, this movie has its ups and downs, but since it was the 1st one we tend to forgive its misgivings.

ESB:92, this movie defined the Star Wars movies for the most part, and on top of that I would say that it was the most solid of the original 3. It did have its high points, but the lows never dived deep enough to bring the movie down like some of the things in RotJ.

RotJ:85, this one could easily be called both the best and the worst of the OT. When the highs were high, they were high, and when they’re low, well…Ewoks and a nonsense rescue plan. When I was a kid this one was my favorite simply because it has a space battle that has never been equaled since its release 32 years ago, in my opinion of course.

Now to the new one,

TFA:80ish, comparable to RotJ, but the highs weren’t as high while the lows weren’t as low. Still light years ahead of the prequels, though I do have a list of complaints that I can’t go into here.

Asking me to accept the SE’s and prequels is like asking a Catholic to accept the Book of Mormon and the Quran.

I wanted to like it a lot more than I did, but there’s just too much wrong with it, I’m afraid. And I’m not typically a super harsh movie critic.

I’m seeing it again next weekend, thanks to my awesome wife who surprised me with tickets for yesterday in addition to our expected viewing next weekend. I’m fully prepared to lower my rating from 9/10 to 8/10 after the second viewing, but we’ll see.

7.9/10

I NEEDED the music score to stand out. If that happened, easily 8.5/10

Second viewing for me was way better than the first. First time I was kind of looking for all the flaws and just waiting for it to suck. Second time I could just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride for what it was. My ranking is below but I find it hard to give them a rating. Instead I’ve indicated whether imho it passes, fails or excels as a Star Wars movie.

Empire Strikes Back (excel)
Star Wars (excel)
The Force Awakens (excel)
Return of the Jedi (excel)
Revenge of the Sith (pass)
Phantom Menace (pass)
Attack of the Clones (fail)

Anyone who says it’s better than jedi needs their head checking… 6 out of 10 for… Effort

I’d personally say it’s better than the first half of Jedi. It doesn’t quite beat Jedi’s finale though. Luke vs Vader and the cinematic space battle is hard to top, no doubt.

I stand by what I said prior to viewing…for me there will only ever be three…it’s just not working! Some things need to be left well alone. I’d hate to see a sequel/prequel of any other classic films which takes everything away from the ‘originals’.

So you went in determined to rate it below ROTJ regardless. I think my head isn’t the one that needs checking.

No, I went in expecting great things as I’d avoided major spoilers for days and heard it was ‘good’ which it was in a fashion. Just not a patch on jedi for ME.

Just saw TFA awakens today. An entertaining film but very much a modern film in terms of editing and pacing, definately prefer the less hyperactive pacing of the Original Trilogy and how characters and scenes were given more time to breath. The cinematography of the Original Trilogy was also far more iconic for me, the shot composition more carefully chosen.

The music didn’t do much for me in this film either, nothing really stood out, unlike the music from the Original Trilogy which is brilliant. The Phantom Menace at least had Duel of the Fates that was brilliant but I can’t remember any piece of music jumping out at me in this. The lack of memorable pieces of music is probably my biggest issue with TFA right now, hopefully that will change with future viewings.

So definately better than the prequels for me but not a classic like the three films of the Original Trilogy, bit confused by the current imdb and rotten tomatoes ratings to be honest, I imagine when the hype had calmed down a bit a lot of people will reassess whether this film really is the equal of ROTJ or even better like some are saying!

Here are my ratings of all the Star Wars films (in terms of which I personally enjoy most, not which are technically the best):

TPM: 6/10
AOTC: 3/10
ROTS: 4/10
SW: 10/10
ESB: 8.5/10
ROTJ: 9/10
TFA: 7.5/10

To be fair, at least TFA didn’t try to alter or ruin the originals like the Prequels tried to do.

I do agree with the rest of your post however. There is the OT, and then this was the first “Disney-fied” movie.

I give the movie a 63/100. It was good, but some reason that I just can’t figure out, it didn’t have a Star Wars feel to me.

It’s weird that a movie released in 2015 doesn’t seem like it was released in 1977, right? What a disappointment!

8 out of 10.

My only knock; I don’t find Kylo or Snoke very interesting. However, it has nothing to do with their performances or the story.

For the record, I never thought Vader or the Emperor were very interesting. Not in 1977/1980 - not now. Particularly the Emperor. Snoke, so far, isn’t any different for me. My touchstones in 1977 were Luke, Han, and Chewie. Now they’re Rey, Han, and Chewie.

While I’m mentioning changes; I prefer the Han of 2015 over the Han of 1977. Han is no longer the shallow and selfish rogue I looked up to in 1977 and I’m no longer the 15-year-old kid I was back then. Young Han connected for me then, older and deeper Han connects for me now.

That was a great part of the film for me.
