As much as that makes me shudder to think, I know it's just fantasy as the election will actually fall in 2252. Odd numbered decades, the election falls every four years starting at 2 (1972, 1992, 2012, etc.). Even numbered decades, the election falls every four starting at 0 (1980, 2000, 2020, etc.). Should Jeb Bush's great great great great great (yeah, you get it) grandson get in office then, it will be because the actual president, elected in 2248 will have died or been killed or be otherwise unable to maintain his/her presidency and Junior Bushie was the Veep, and not because he was elected. Just thought I'd point that out.

So you mean that by 2018 PanAm will be flying us to a space station orbiting the moon, the USSR will be in a cold war against the USA, people will use a "videophone" by Bell to talk to relatives, and the computers will be gigantic mainframes with no GUI? I can't wait to live in 2018, so I can discover that monolith and sell it on e-bay!

Uh yeah, something like that. This should give you some insight into how much I liked 2001. Other than the monolith and the mainframe computer with no GUI, I recall none of the things you said from the movie.

I hated 2001.

Wow.

How pessimistic must they have been to think the Coldwar would still be going on in 2001.

Well, it was 1968, the US hadn't even won the space race yet.

I thought 2001 was set in an unrealistically distant future and involved space wars with monkey's wielding hammers or some such evolutionary bullcrap...

So what? It's just the cold war in space? TO IMDB!!

Stanley Kubrick just SPINNED on his grave right now, 100 rotations per second. And Arthur C Clark just spinned on his... bed, he's not dead yet, at least I don't think so. Did he die? Last I knew of him, he was incredibly old but alive.

Wee, post 2022... the year that... uh... oh, I got it! the year I'll get to be 40!
That is, if I'm still alive by then...

Yes, but it has been quite a while. I remember he was reluctant about writing it, as it was some sort of a "beating up a dead horse" kind of thing... I mean, you all know what happened to "2010", right? Right.

"2001" could be the best film ever, if Kubrick had not directed another movie after this one, called "A Clockwork Orange"...

It was 2064: Odyssey Three, or something like that.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.
