Ranking the Star Wars films — Page 43

 (Edited)
  1. Star Wars — Weaker than Empire in terms of story and depth, but totally self-contained and so much fun. I can just throw this on when I need a comfort film. 5/5 (in star Wars terms)
  2. The Empire Strikes Back — The strongest entry to date. In my world, definitely cinema’s strongest sequel. Expands the characters, sets up a big universe, introduces great new characters (My buddy Boba!) and locations, doesn’t take a dump on the romance, and has a whole new and deeper wonder to it than the first film. 5(.5?)/5
  3. Return of the Jedi — This is only so far up because of its place in the OT. The duel between Luke, Vader, and the Emperor save the film. The rest of it is rehashed or phoned-in. Feels like a contract film than the passion of Star Wars and Empire. 3/5
  4. The Force Awakens — Mostly interchangeable with Jedi. I’d definitely put it ahead of Jedi in terms of acting, writing, and fun, but Jedi edges it out because of its OT Status. Brought the magic and fun back, makes me grin like a giddy little boy. 3.5/5
  5. Revenge of the Sith — This is only as high as it is because of the potential of the basic story and the culmination of the story. It’s definitely the strongest of the PT, but it’s still weak. The gap between Jedi and Awakens is almost non-existant, the gap between Awakens and Sith is a good deal more than 12 parsecs. 3/5
  6. The Phantom Menace — I feel like this is the only PT film that has a Star Wars feel to it, because they used actual locations and props extensively. However, it’s also the only PT film that doesn’t really fit in the “Saga”. This is an Anthology film and nothing more. 3/5
  7. Attack of the Clones — This goes way down here because it’s frankly crap, especially when it should be one of the biggest and best films of the Saga. The Clone Wars we’ve heard so much about don’t start until the last quarter of the film, and then end in the next film. There was potential, and much like the entire PT, the basic story concepts are good but executed terribly. 2/5

The Holiday Special and the Clone Wars film I won’t count as The Holiday Special was TV-only, and the Clone Wars “film” was basically just two episodes of the show, one of which was one of the worst of the entire series and the other wasn’t particularly strong, there were arcs much more deserving of being in theaters than what was.

I still haven’t sat down and watched the Ewok films. I think that’s about it in terms of what’s out there.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

Attack of the Clones

1: Empire. I debated for the longest time whether this or… the next entry, would win out, but in the end I found myself agreeing with the majority here.
2: A New Hope. The one that started it all and the one I’ve rewatched the most over the years, to the point where I could probably recite damn near the entire movie from memory. I rank it below Empire mostly because I feel Empire doesn’t have as many unintentionally funny or just plain weird moments. Which leads me into…
3/4: Return of the Jedi. EWOKS. JEDI ROCKS. FORCE KICKS. BOBA’S HILARIOUSLY ANTI-CLIMACTIC DEATH. This movie is honestly kinda rich on the unintentional comedy. The bits on the Death Star mostly save it though. A tie with…
3/4: The Force Awakens. Yeah it’s pretty much a total rehash of A New Hope. Yeah Rey’s motivations are a bit all over the place. Yeah I think I’ve only ever met one person who enjoyed Starkiller Base. Still, a lot of this movie’s flaws are forgivable to me just because of how much fun it was, and how for the first time since Jedi, we got a movie that actually felt like Star Wars. Also I like Finn. He’s a pretty likable and compelling character. Oh, and it looks phenomenal.
5: Revenge of the Sith. Man, those action scenes are awesome… Man, the writing is horrendous
6: The Phantom Menace. …I actually kinda like Qui-Gon Jinn. I find his whole “I am right and everybody else (especially Jar-Jar) is stupid”-attitude highly entertaining.
7: Attack of the Clones. The worst romance I’ve seen and not a whole lot else besides empty spectacle. Empty spectacle that isn’t even particularly fun to watch.

Attack of the Clones

I want to agree completely, but the placement of ROTJ is too high.

If you’re playing a video game…but I was trying to watching a movie.

I disagree. I think it changes based on the circumstances such as Han and Chewie coming into the picture which made it impossible to have passage back to Jakku (for the time being) and the prospect that she is kicking it with Han Solo who she went total fangirl on when she learned who this man was. And it changes again when she is shaken up by her Force Vision and decides she wants no part in any of this. And after seeing something like that I think (at least for some people) that would be ample reason to switch motives.

Also I like Finn. He’s a pretty likable and compelling character.

I do too man. I can’t wait for them to flesh out his character even more and to have his bromance with Poe grow even stronger.

I like ROTJ and all and I have my issues with SW but I disagree with this. ROTJ may have a couple of the best moments in the entire saga but it’s not as well written or consistent imo

You already did that. It wasn’t funny the first time.

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. Star Wars(1977)/The Force Awakens
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. Revenge of the Sith
  5. Attack of the Clones/The Clone Wars
  6. The Phantom Menace

The Empire Strikes Back is obviously the best.

Star Wars and the Force Awakens are so similar in quality and execution that I had to make it a tie. The Force Awakens can be a bland rehash, but it has better cinematography, acting, dialouge, etc. than the original Star Wars.

Return of the Jedi is by default better than all the prequels.

Revenge of the Sith is the most enjoyable of the prequels (not saying much), but it’s an inherently flawed retread of what we already know from the original trilogy explained in pointless detail.

The worst three movies are all very similar in quality to me (unwatchable garbage), but the Phantom Menace is the worst for its historical value: it ruined Star Wars forever and is the most dissapointing movie of all time. Now, the Jedi are really boring, the Force is exclusive instead of inclusive, Darth Vader is portrayed by a terrible child actor, etc. The only solutions to fix the saga after the Phantom Menace came out is to reboot or just force the non-George-Lucas writers to work around all the dumb stuff introduced in the movie.

I don’t understand this on two levels.

Well ROTS I was very pleased with when I first saw it so IMO its the best of the prequels. I was pleased with TFA too so they tied in my list but incase I get any picky people who go you ‘cant have ties in the list’ I gave ROTS the lead over TFA.

You must have not seen it in a long time.

Film is entirely subjective so be careful to not assume he can’t defend his opinion. There’s no objective evaluation on whether ROTS or TFA is better. Out of the two Offical blu Rays, I prefer TFA. With my favorite Fanedited form of episode 3, I then would prefer it over TFA. My own opinion. And you have yours. Discussion is fun but it loses all joy once you decide your opinion is objectively correct.

So please don’t bully another user cause they choose to like a certain movie. Just have a respectful dissussion.

Wether or not you like a movie is entirely subjective, but the question if a movie is well made is not.

That’s closer to true, but still not really true. How you define “well made” is kinda subjective and a movie can quite easily be “well made” in some ways and not so much in others. Since we’re talking about ROTS, that movie is “well made” in terms of its visual effects (especially for its time), its action scenes, some parts of its story, etc. Not so well made when it comes to the dialogue and acting.

No the last time I watched it was about a year or two ago. I was just mentioning that I was very pleased with it in my first viewing as well as my subsequent viewings. I know you dont like the prequels Frink but lets not be subjective. Yes the prequels have flaws just anything else but Id rather live with them good or bad then wonder what the events were that preceded the OT.

I can respect people for being subjective but there’s always a fine line between stating whats true and what they think is true. Thats why in just about everything I post I put IMO. It may seem cliche but at least it shows my attempt of separating opinion from fact. Another problem is people associate opinions with facts because some share the same views. If 9 out of 10 of us agreed red was the best color, thats still not exactly a proven fact. Its just a majority agreeing on one opinion.

ROTJ and TFA tied for now. May change with more viewings and nostalgia erasure. We’ll see.

There’s no need for me to understand love for ROTS.
