Ranking the Star Wars films — Page 21

The creature is in the film, its name is not. So yes, you brought it up.

And as I keep saying, canon is what you make of it, not what a corporation tells you it is.

Swagmas… was responding to me, and I knew what the acklay was. Because I read the AOTC visual dictionary. Yeah, the visual dictionaries are the extent of my horizon expansion. Just because more crap exists, doesn’t mean everyone should eat it. I’m sorry, but when people say that “there’s more than just the movies”, I just shake my head.

SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.

DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

Friendly reminder that the words “Ewok” or “Ewoks” are never said in ROTJ.

I’m not interested in dealing with semantics but I know this conversation came about when I responded to someone saying other people should post links because they’re not open to reading/watching/playing other things Star Wars related. That’s all there is to it.

And as I keep saying, canon is what you make of it, not what a corporation tells you it is.

I have my own personal canon but that has nothing to do with someone wanting other people to pander to their laziness.

I said this earlier:

You don’t even have to read the novels/comics because there are videos on the internet covering these characters.

you can even go on a fucking Versus video and learn about different characters with minimal effort and time expended. There is no excuse.

I’m sorry, but when people say that “there’s more than just the movies”, I just shake my head.

Maybe that’s because there IS. Whether you think all of the other stuff is good or not is a different topic.

But the movies are all that matters! If I just wrote a novel titled “Star Trek: The Crap Planet”, and somehow got it licensed as a ST novel and published it, that doesn’t mean it matters. It’s just a glorified fanfiction.

They were marketed so much both when the original film came out and when the SE made it to theatres that it became a household term. Even Oprah had a guy dressed as an ewok on her show back in the 90s (amongst other characters) when the SEs came out. It’s a bit different than to not know who Yarna d’al’ Gargan is.

Depends on who it is. Sentients like Darth Bane, Grand Admiral Thrawn or Exar Kun should be instantly identifiable names to any fan of Star Wars. Not knowing someone like Kas’im or Darth Talon IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THOUGH.

I don’t know who they are because I don’t read books that have pictures of Carey Fisher holding a lightsaber on the cover.

So what? Eight billion people have heard of Ewoks. More people have heard of Dustin Ackley than the Acklay.

As for the comment that TFA was “lazy”: My dad happens to be friends with the wife of the guy they brought on to create all of the star fields for the movie and I got an opportunity to talk to him at a party this past New Year’s Eve. He was telling me how he would spend hours every day trying to recreate the unique look of the star fields from the original Star Wars, digitally painting each star by hand and trying to make each star field for each shot unique. He said everybody working on the film put in that level of effort, pouring hours into getting every detail of the art direction exactly as it needed to be. It would have been so easy for him to roll out a new star field from photoshop or after effects every couple minutes but that’s not what they wanted on this movie.

If that level of commitment and respect for the work is considered lazy then I must be basically Jabba the Hutt in comparison.

I’m sure there must at least 7 people in the world that think that too.

ILM had a further 9 years and an extra $52million to work on that creature and that’s the best they could come up with?

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. And I wish I could have. I’m terribly uncreative with on the spot thoughts.

You have to be kidding me. The T-Rex in JP still looks great today. That film set the bar for CG creatures. But 7 years later and TPM’s CG characters look fake as hell. More like a video game cut scene than real objects. And 10 years after JP, AOTC should have knocked it out of the park compared to outdated CG, but it failed miserably. The only Dino that hasn’t held up so well is the Bronto. But when you compare it to the Ronto’s in the SE, which were actually the same model that was used and modified, it still looks better than those things.

This looks real. It looks like it is actually there:

The Cg in the prequels looks fake as hell in comparison.

Well to be honest both look fake. When it comes to models of animate object, the excessive stiffness and lack of natural dynamics makes it apparent fake. When it comes to CGI, it is excessive perfection that makes it apparent fake. It just a matter of which kind of fake you prefer.

All those AOTC shots with animals look good, and better than the JP t-rex considering that CG usually looks a lot worse in bright light. The t-rex’s head looks great, but where the light is shining on the top of his leg it doesn’t look too good.

The BD’s DNR isn’t doing AOTC any favors either. Here’s the HDTV version for comparison.
