Ranking the Star Wars films — Page 173

If The Mandalorian continues to impress at this level, it may eventually become my favorite Star Wars of all, even more so than the movies.

Definitely up there with Star Wars and Empire for me. It’s simple enough storytelling, and that’s part of why it’s so compelling. The parent and child dynamic is so quintessential to Star Wars, except now it feels more relevant to real life.

The Clone Wars finale, the Star Wars Rebels finale, and Rogue One are my other favourite pieces of Disney era content and as a matter of fact they’re ALL ‘up there’. If you ask me, it’s a great time to be a Star Wars fan.

I really agree with this. The last four episodes of TCW were top-tier Star Wars.

I thought it was time for an update.

Master list:

  1. The Mandalorian
  2. Rogue One
  3. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
  4. Star Wars (1977)

Wow, Chapters 13 and 14 must have made it for you, Rodney! Congratulations to The Mandalorian on being bestowed the great honour of being #1 on Rodney’s favourites list.

It’s close, for me. Behind Empire… for the moment.

I’ve been thinking this since the middle of the first season. I talked about it more in the thread for The Mandalorian. I love all of Star Wars, but The Mandalorian makes me feel like a kid again. I love it.

Now that we haven’t had a new movie in almost two years and the dust has pretty much settled on the ST, I’m revisiting my list. This is how I’m feeling with a little bit of hindsight.

3. The Last Jedi
4. Return of the Jedi
5. The Force Awakens
6. Rogue One
7. The Phantom Menace
8. Solo
9-10. Attack of the Clones
9-10. Revenge of the Sith
11. The Rise of Skywalker

Good call. My last ranking was over a year ago and I re-evaluated a big portion of the franchise during the period.

Mine have fluctuated a bit I think, I’ve become less keen on the sequels over time. I’ve also become less keen on The Mandalorian season 2 so that’s dragged the show down a little in my rankings.

Movies:

  • Star Wars
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • Return of the Jedi
  • Rogue One
  • Solo
  • Revenge of the Sith
  • The Force Awakens
  • The Last Jedi
  • The Phantom Menace
  • Attack of the Clones
  • The Clone Wars
  • The Rise of Skywalker

Series:

  • Rebels
  • The Clone Wars (2008-2020)
  • The Mandalorian
  • The Bad Batch (s1 at least)

Still haven’t finished watching Clone Wars (2003), Resistance, or Droids.

A re-ranking of live-action stuff:

  1. Empire Strikes Back 1980
  2. Star Wars 1977
  3. Return of the Jedi 1983
  4. The Last Jedi
  5. The Mandalorian
  6. The Phantom Menace
  7. Solo
  8. The Force Awakens
  9. The Rise of Skywalker
  10. Revenge of the Sith
  11. Attack of the Clones
  12. Rogue One

Rogue One just struck a nerve in such a thoroughly nasty way. It’s the only movie in the series that fell victim to the Eight Deadly Words for me.

  1. The Empire Strikes Back (Obvious reasons are obvious. Nothing I can say that hasn’t been said)
  2. A New Hope/Star Wars (Basically the perfect movie don’t @ me)
  3. The Last Jedi (Best of the sequels and will only be remembered more fondly as the years go by)
  4. Return of the Jedi (Not as good as the other OT films but still very good, perfect ending)
  5. Solo: A Star Wars Story (Underrated.)
  6. The Force Awakens (I was 14 when this came out and it felt like my soul left my mortal body this movie is awesome)
  7. Revenge of the Sith (overrated? Yeah, definitely without the context of TCW to back it up too. Do I love it? Hell yeah.)
  8. Rogue One (Just fun.)
  9. The Rise of Skywalker (The Spider-Man 3 of the Star Wars movies. Undeniably stupid but a blast nonetheless)
  10. The Phantom Menace (I don’t know I just like this one)
  11. Attack of the Clones (the look of this movie just has not aged well but there are some decent memes)

My rankings have changed too.

Skywalker Saga:

The Phantom Menace
The Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith
A New Hope
The Last Jedi
The Rise of Skywalker
The Force Awakens

Spinoffs:

Rogue One
Solo

TV Series:

The Clone Wars
Rebels

Attack of the Clones has become one of my favourite films in the series. It’s not perfect by any stretch but every time I watch it I discover new layers. I also enjoy the slower and meditative pacing as it gives you lots of time to reflect and absorb the atmosphere.

I’m also leaning The Rise of Skywalker slightly over The Force Awakens. I think The Force Awakens is better made but I find myself enjoying more scenes in The Rise of Skywalker, namely the Aki Aki Festival with the children and puppet show and the training montages. Context aside these things are pretty fun to watch.

I hope one day soon I’ll feel less cynical about Disney Star Wars. I miss being engaged but it’s so different from George’s Star Wars that it just doesn’t have the same feel and desire to tell stories but instead seems like nostalgic tales. I think it’s why I’m cautiously optimistic about Visions. It feels like it could be more.

"Pleasure’s fun. It’s great, but you can’t keep it going forever; just accept the fact that it’s here and it’s gone, and maybe then again, it will come back, and you’ll get to do it again. Joy lasts forever. Pleasure is purely self-centered. It’s all about your pleasure: it’s about you. It’s a selfish, self-centered emotion, that is created by a self-centered motive of greed. Joy is compassion. Joy is giving yourself to somebody else, or something else. And it’s a kind of thing that is, in its subtlety and lowness, much more powerful than pleasure. You get hung up on pleasure; you’re doomed. If you pursue joy; you will find everlasting happiness.” - George Lucas
