^ I actually thought “fair enough” in the ranking and comments on the prequels, thinking you’d grown up with them and are one of the few prequel lovers on here brave enough to tell it from their perspective. But as soon as I saw the ANH ranking and first sentence I knew it was an AF joke 😉

This has spawned some non-joking discussion
I did grow up with the Prequels, with ROTS having a significant influence on me. I do enjoy the overall story of these films, but the acting, set design, and pacing kills it for me. As an adult, I can barely take some of the choices (I don’t like sand) as serious. Yet I enjoy the era. The PT books / shows / games have always been my favorite. Not that I’ve ever disliked the OT era- I’ve just always viewed the characters, planets, and conflicts of the prequels more interested.

So much era ranking would be:

  1. PT
  2. OT
  3. ST

While my actual film ranking is the April Fools one in reverse.

If there are any interesting stories that take place in that era before the battle of Geonosis, I’m not aware of them.

Quite a few of the Age of the Republic one-shot comics take place either before TPM, or between TPM and AotC. There’s also the Anakin and Obi-Wan comic series, which I would consider one of the better canon comics, though the aesthetics are very non Star Wars (which can be a plus or minus) and the ending’s fairly rushed. As for novels, a new book about Count Dooku that’s set before AotC is coming out pretty soon.

I’m definitely curious the quality of the “Age of” stuff. They’re basically a collection of one shots, yes? Could be good but I don’t know.

I’ve been wondering if Anakin & Obi-wan is any good. That section of the canon is really ripe for stories about Anakin specifically. He’s so different in AOTC vs. TPM and I never really found anything that bridged that gap in the old EU. Rogue Planet was okay, I started Jedi Trial but wasn’t into it. Honestly one of the better things I read in that regard was back in the day I had a middle grade book called Jedi Quest that actually did try to find Anakin right in between the two films to decent success.

On the whole it’s sort of an uneventful time period. It’s cool that they’re finally doing something with Dooku because that’s another massive gap in the canon. From the old EU the Darth Plageius touched on Dooku a bit, and was also set entirely pre-AOTC (and is actually a pretty good book in general, though definitely very un-Star Warsy in many respects).

In general it seems like they’re starting to do more in the new canon with PT stuff (including and perhaps especially pre-AOTC - there’s Queen’s Shadow and Master and Apprentice as well), and it’s also fair to assume we’ll see more and more from the ST and also the post-OT, pre-ST time period which is a fascinating era itself.

The I haven’t read any Age of the Rebellion, but the Age of the Republic series is hit or miss. From what I’ve read I think the stories actually decrease in quality as they get closer to Episode 3, the ones before before Episode 2 can do their own thing while the ones after conform to the typical Clone Wars formula.

Anakin and Obi-Wan is good, Anakin’s character is definitely closer to how it is in Episode 2. I’d say the best part are the flashbacks, where Sheev interacts with Anakin.

I’ve had quite a change in opinion since my first ranking, so here’s an update.

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. A New Hope
  3. The Force Awakens
  4. Return of the Jedi
  5. Revenge of the Sith
  6. Rogue One
  7. The Last Jedi
  8. Solo
  9. The Phantom Menace
  10. Attack of the Clones

Your first ranking was three months ago.

Being on OT.com for three months has really changed my perspective on the movies, so I wanted to do an update to compare my views before and after discovering this website.

Have had a change of heart about TPM recently, so my ranking is now slightly different.

This will be my last ranking for a while, I think:

1.Star Wars (1977)
2.The Empire Strikes Back
3.Return of the Jedi
4.The Force Awakens
5.The Fallen Knight (Last Jedi fan edit)
6.Solo
7.Revenge of the Sith
8.Attack of the Clones
9.The Phantom Menace
10.The Last Jedi (actual movie)
11.Rogue One

Also: For those who don’t know, Fallen Knight is a 95-minute Last Jedi fan edit that removes all of the comedy and sub-plots, focusing the story down almost entirely to just Luke, Rey, and Kylo Ren.

I think at this point I can definitely say that my Top 6 are “locked in place” (until The Rise of Skywalker, of course):

1.Star Wars (1977)
2.The Empire Strikes Back
3.Return of the Jedi
4.The Force Awakens
5.Solo
6.Revenge of the Sith

And Rogue One is pretty much locked as my least favorite of them all.

Where it gets tricky is with The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and The Last Jedi. At the moment, those all keep flip-flopping amongst each other for me. I’ll need to see each one again to really be sure how I feel about them all, I suppose. Been busy lately, so unsure when I’ll have time for that.

Also, I imagine that I will feel very differently about The Last Jedi once I see The Rise of Skywalker.

Skywalker Saga:

A New Hope
The Empire Strikes Back
The Phantom Menace
Revenge of the Sith
Return of the Jedi
The Last Jedi
Attack of the Clones
The Force Awakens

Spinoffs:

Rogue One
Solo

“Heroes come in all sizes, and you don’t have to be a giant hero. You can be a very small hero. It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas

Not going to. I’m finding Rogue One and Prequel Trilogy (barring Jar Jar) to have more originality compared to the sequel movies. Harrison Ford back as Han Solo was nice. I’m not even bothered I haven’t watched Solo yet. The Clone Wars (Chronological Story Order, mind ye,) is par excellence.
At this point I’m prattling on and rambling. Carry-on with this thread.

Rogue One has grown on me a little bit recently… Gonna try this again:

1.Star Wars (1977)
2.The Empire Strikes Back
3.Return of the Jedi
4.The Force Awakens
5.Solo
6.The Fallen Knight (Last Jedi fan edit)
7.Revenge of the Sith
8.Rogue One
9.The Phantom Menace
10.Attack of the Clones
11.The Last Jedi (actual movie)

Ranking these movies is always tough for me. I like them all for different reasons.

Since I can never make up my mind about this, I came up with a new system:

Tier 1 - Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi
Tier 2 - Revenge of the Sith, The Force Awakens, Solo
Tier 3 - The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Rogue One, The Last Jedi

NOTE: Each tier lists their respective films in chronologic order on purpose.
Disclaimer: I enjoy each Star Wars film for what it is.

Not sure about the top half of your list (mostly just TPM ranking anywhere above the OT) but I definitely like your bottom half LOL!

It’s the film I always go back and watch, the music, the visuals, the fight scenes, the worldbuilding, the lore, anything with Qui-Gon Ginn. I have trouble watching every Star Wars film in one sitting except The Phantom Menace, I would be lying if I said I didn’t like the film more than the OT.

Attack of the Clone is a blast too, although that’s because it’s fucking hilarious. I was with a friend and it was his first time watching AOTC, we laughed so hard I’d thought we’d bust a gut. I just can’t take that film seriously, but what it sets up lore wise is amazing.

Fair enough reasons Jesta and good on you for ranking it as such in a place called OT.com 😛

I honestly came here for the preservation and fan-edit side, not to circle jerk about the Original Trilogy. I’m not going to deny that the OT are superior to the PT in a common sense, but damn, those films are necessary IMHO to tell the complete story; the 6 part tragedy and redemption of Anakin Skywalker. Even if the OT wasn’t marketed to be apart if that story from the beginning, it’s how I view them.

Here is my completely unnecessary breakdown of the Star Wars films:

The PT is about how society and institutions can corrupt and influence the individual

The OT is about how an individual can redeem and influence the individual

The George Lucas ST was going to be about how the soul controls and influences the individual

I would love to see what George had (or has, someone please make George Lucas’s ST with the remaining OT cast) planned for the ST, yes Midichlorians and all.

If someone went through this thread and tabulated all these lists into one ranking, I wonder what the results would look like?

My guess at the average ranking:

-TESB
-ANH
-TFA
-RO
-ROTJ
-TLJ
-SOLO
-ROTS
-TPM
-AOTC

This is a largely pro-TLJ site, save a few who differ.

I don’t think this site is pro or anti.

Maybe I’m single handedly skewing the average. Look at the rankings in this thread and I don’t think you can say that this is really a “pro-TLJ site.”
