Ranking the Star Wars films — Page 144

I enjoy fan edited prequels quite a bit actually. Not on the level of the OT or even the ST, but I still enjoy them. Some parts of ROTS actually give me goosebumps, admittedly probably more because of John Williams than George Lucas, but still I get caught up in it.

well, i think that the “so this is how liberty dies - with thunderous applause” moment in RotS is absolutely amazing, for example.

lol. She’s just stating the obvious.

It might’ve work if she had just said, “so this is how liberty dies.” Period.

A scene carried basically 80% by John Williams. It’s good, except it feels to me very un-Star Wars.

Yes. That scene felt incomplete. I wished we had more background on the origins of the parliamentary procedures.

I’m in a similar boat with you. I saw and enjoyed all the PT films when I was a kid but at the time I didn’t think either TPM or AOTC quite measured up to the OT (AOTC in particular was something of a disappointment to me at the time).

Huh. I liked the prequels more than the OT for years as a child. It wasn’t until I was 12 that I came to find them inferior. For a while I really disliked them, but now I’ve come back around and enjoy them again (except TPM, what a slog).

Not enough people read the EU.

well, i disagree. i think it’s a good line accompanied by a great score and a pretty good delivery by portman.

Similar to how the original title for War and Peace was War, What is it Good For?, the original line was “so this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applesauce.”

I agree. It’s a standout moment in the prequels to me. If the Senate hadn’t been made out to seem nearly as stupid, and the deception of Palpatine over the Senate was done more gracefully, than the moment would have had more power.

But it is a great moment on its own. A great line with great music and one awesome looking shot to cap everyting off (Seeing Palpatine raise his hands from behind).

Well I was blessed with the OT before I saw the PT so I knew what was good right beforehand and had that to measure the PT against.

disagree with the blessed part, because that way you don’t enjoy as many things as i do, for example.

No, blessed is the right word. I enjoyed it well enough when I was a kid (as in I enjoyed them a lot). All I said was I never liked TPM and AOTC as much as the rest.

Anyway, I’m older now, and whether I watched the OT or the PT first wouldn’t change the fact that one is good and the other isn’t.

right, i just feel bad for you because you can’t be entertained nowadays by something that has once entertained you.

That’s like feeling bad for Neo because he took the red pill. :p

Yeah but, so was I, sorta. Well, I started with TPM, which I thought was okay, then I went on to the OT which I enjoyed, and then watched AOTC and ROTS which blew me out of the water.

I know what you mean. I turn on PBS every morning out of habit, and am always sad that I now find Barney annoying.

The older you get, the more noticeable the flaws of TV shows/movies/etc. you once loved become. It happens to everybody.

I can still watch them easily enough. You could even say I still find them “entertaining,” I just don’t think they’re very good. Either way I don’t really care. My palate was very limited back then. Now there’s more good stuff out there that I’m enjoying than I can count. I’ll survive.

But, like, why though?

The reason TPM looks a lot more like a SW movie is because it was shot on film + they used real sets and locations which is its saving grace unlike the latter two prequels where Lucas went overboard with 99% CGI alien characters as opposed to the OT where non-human characters were either people in costumes or puppets and of course the obvious nauseating blue/green screen backgrounds, speaking of which, I once read that when Ewan McGregor was approached by Michael Bay for the movie The Island when he wrapped up ROTS he was reluctant at first because he was tired of shooting in front of blue screens and green screens but Bay told him not to worry because he prefers practical effects. McGregor later admitted working on The Island was a welcome relief because once more he was working on location and physical sets.
