Dirk didn't like it either, so I was surprised when I saw that meeting.

Who cares if the show was good or not. Who doesn't want to meet Katee Sakhoff?

I only see one Starbuck in the picture.   Who's the girl?

Genuine dislike or general dislike of remakes / reboots?

and do you consider Galactica 1980 to be canon?

Musicals can be good if they are cheesy fun and don't take themselves too seriously - like Repo or Across the universe or indeed Dr Horrible.

Wait, are Repo and Across the Universe your examples of good musicals?

There are some much beloved musicals I don't like at all: South Pacific, Carosel, Oklahoma (to some degree), and others.  Something being a 'musical' doesn't really increase or decrease my chance of liking something I guess... but I do like a fair number of musicals.

1776
Hello Dolly
Music Man
The Pirates of Penzance
The Sound of Music
Disney Cartoon Musicals
Oliver!
Moulin Rouge!
Into the Woods
Paint Your Wagon
Man of LaMancha
Les Miserables
Phantom of the Opera
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Mary Poppins
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
My Fair Lady
Guys and Dolls (certain local performances)

That's all I can think of presently.

And I hate hate hate hate hate Cats.

Oh no, I'm going to have to watch a musical now.

And how could I forget the following from Star Wars! the Musical.  (It's a clinically proven fact that 100% of movie titles that end in an exclamation point are musicals!):

The Doors are Closing In!:

I don't normally like remakes.   In this case, I couldn't get past the recasting Starbuck as a female.

I don't know. I don't want to be cannon,  I but don't know that I have a choice.

My friend played in the band at school and they did the music for Guys and Dolls. They did a great job. I later watched the Brando/Sinatra movie version and dug that too. Saw a high school production of Annie too, but that's about it.

Oh, they did a couple of musicals on Scrubs! :D

Wow, you're totally right!  How did that one skip my mind.  I'll put it near the top.

I also forgot Guys'n'Dolls, though it's really only based on a high school performance I saw when I was in Jr High.

I also recommend:

Fiddler On The Roof

Gigi

The King and I

Sweeney Todd(not the movie although its not too bad,  there was this live recording in the '80s of Angela Lansbury and George Hern doing the show, it is very good.  George Hern IS Sweeney Todd)

Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory(the orignal, not the horrible remake)

Camelot(not the movie version, its terrible.  There is a live recording of Richard Harris has doing the show at the Winter Garden theater.  Imho, Harris gives a tour de force on the stage in that performance, much much better than the film)

of course, with any of the Broadway Musicals, the movie isn't the true way of experiencing it.   The only way to truly experience a Broadway musical would be to go back in time and see the original cast performing it live on stage.   Unfortunately that is impossible.

@ Xhonzi, learn to read ;) Those are my examples of cheesy fun and NOT what makes for a good musical - you may recall that we were discussing people not liking musicals. I offer such suggestions as something that may be less off-putting to such people.

@ Warbler - I ask because a lot of people were very vocal and negative toward the newer BSG before they knew a single thing about it.

now, to not like something is everyone's choice but would you be willing to give it a go in the mindset that it's something totally different. - pretending for a moment that it's got nothing to do with a show that came before.

New starbuck is not old starbuck sans testicles, it's a different character - jsut an homage on the name, as done with several others - adama, tigh, boomer, etc.

sorry, I just can't help but compare it to the original and I can't get past the female Starbuck.   I just can't do it.

some of the ones he listed are very good musicals, classics as a matter of fact.  Even the ones he didn't like are good, especially Carousel.

I disagree with you Johnny, besides the gender shift the characters are remarkably similar even down to their shared ultimate fate.

Both are cocky, cigar chomping, heavy drinking, sexual predators.

The bromance/romance with Apollo is there.

The gambling streak is there (both in life and games).

The mystical stuff happens to both characters.

But like everything in NuBSG it's just tone shifted from campy family fun to more adult centred character driven drama.

Warb if you can read this comparing the two, is part of the fun.

It's essentially the same story but so shifted in tone that it feels completely different which is the best thing to do when telling a story again.

If they did it exactly the same what would be the point?

It is the story of refugees escaping from killer robots so making it a grim tale of survival (including the massive moral and ethical juggling involved) makes sense to me (and gripping story telling for the most part).
