ROTS: Palpatine's Diatribe

Anyone notice that when Palps starts to wig out and yell “No…no…no…no…no” that he sounds just like Willem Defoe in the first Spiderman movie? Particularly during the scene where Green Goblin is unmasked and his two “sides” start to conflict while Peter is deciding what to do with him.

You know....that "no..no...no...no...no" line slipped by me when I saw the movie at the midnight show.

But when I saw it again the second time....I actually burst out laughing at it....and so did plenty of other people in the theater.

Palpy threw a major spaz attack there.....and it was funny as hell.

That's another bad line from the movie... "No.. No, no, no, no NO! You are going to die! Power! Infinite power!"
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Maybe the no..no..no part wasn't that bad.....it was the damn silly look on Palpy's face.

Shit that was funny!!!

But seriously....you'd think that at the most crucial moment in the whole damn saga.....there's something stupid like that to make you laugh out loud when things should be serious as all hell...

True, and I could have done without the voice fluctuations after that.

The low, menacing ROTJ voice would have been much better IMO.

It was all an act, or a reflection of Palpatine's real temprament, or both.

Lucas seems to be saying Sith lords are really nothing more than cowards who when cornered and unarmed will beg like a scared child for their life, waiting for an opportunity to strike out.

The alternative theory is that Palpatine, being the master manipulator, knew Anakin would be on his way and it was all an act for show. He certainly let himself get beaten and didn't use force lightning until Anakin arrived. His fight with Yoda showed how good he is, which tends to negate how he lost to Windu to begin with.

I subscribe to the latter theory.

Ian is a great actor, and that was such a nicely filmed sequence.
I'm a mainstream Star Wars fan exploring the extremes of Star Wars fandom. My views will no doubt be unpopular. I shall be kind and courteous in my postings, and I hope you will be too.

I think it was "Unlimited POWER!"
The first thing I thought of when Palpatine started his string of "No, no, no, no..." was that he sounded a lot like Gollum from Lord of the Rings.

I don't think it was Lucas's intent for us to believe that Windu actually defeated Palpatine. After all, if Sidious could be killed at that time by Windu, then there wouldn't be much point to the prophecy that says that Anakin will kill him. I think Palpy was just faking it in order to gain Anakin's sympathy and trick him into coming over to the Dark Side (by striking Windu).

Why did his face shrivel then?

so that we coudl all see 'why' his face appeared as it did in the OT

Why Anakin really turned to the dark side:
"Anakin, You're father I am" - Yoda
"No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!" - Anakin

I've heard a lot of different theories about the face shriveling. From damage from "reflected force lightning". . . to his redirecting all his power into the battle (thus not being able to hide his true face any longer, though this doesn't explain why he didn't put the mask back into place after the battle. . . or did he want to use it to get sympathy from his scars in the Senate?).

The Visual dictionary says both, I believe. I was looking at it in the bookstore and it says both that he was damaged in the entry for the Chancellor. . . and then at the end of the book for the Sidious entry, it says that his true face was revealed. Sounds like a bad editor.

Perhaps George Lucas wrote the book.

Oh wait... same thing.

ok, heres what i thought while watching it. (with some background) I had been under the impression that his face was like that because of extended/heavy use of the dark side, possibly used to extend his life. but during the scene when he changed i felt that he was changing because even though he had it under control and was just trying to get Anakin to react as he did, the consequence of letting his own force lightning be 'reflected' back at(into) him cause him to shrivel (guess thats the best word)

but honestly now i dont know

IMHO, it was intended that Mace 'beat' Palpatine. Samuel L. Jackson was quoted numerous times that his only request to GL (other than the purple lightsaber) was that he "didn't want to go out like some punk" in Ep III, which means he defeats Palpatine only to have Anakin and Palps team up on him. I also believe that Palps' disfigurement was strictly from the lightning being deflected back. What I don't understand was his voice fluctuating, because he uses his ROTJ voice in all his transmissions and whatnot throughout the PT.

I think going out like a punk was getting shot in the back by Clone Troopers, getting killed off in a way that is pivotal to the story is not. I think it was clear that Palpatine was letting Mace win and picked the exact moment to look weak just as Anakin was coming in the room. Further evidence is that Palpatine seems to be toying with Yoda as well and not taking him seriously at all almost like he could take him out anytime if he wanted. I also thought that his face always looked like that and the Chancelor image was a mask and he did not need to hide anymore since his plan was now underway to become emperor.

I totally agree with the post directly above mine.

And as for the voice fluctuation: I think it was done to show that Sidious is not just a man who was scarred by lighting. But much more. A demon taking physical form. Palpatine is more like a possessed vessel for a much greater power, masquerading all this time as a kindly old statesman. An ancient evil bubbling up from the body it now inhabits. Quite literally "The Devil". That's how it came across to me anyway.

Palpatine was obviously fascinated by history as evidenced by the artifacts, statues, etc displayed in his office, not to mention his knowledge of mythology and so forth. Could Palpatine have become possessed at some point by the evil spirit of a Sith Lord while unearthing or studying one of these artifacts? I think it's plausible. Much more plausible than him just being born evil.

For some reason I always thought Palpatine had the ability to hide his real appearence. So ... he was just an ordinary fella before getting fried?
