ROTJ is Luke or Anakin?

Interesting debate. Who is the Jedi in ROTJ? Some say luke, but he was never a Jedi until before ROTJ. So how is he returning? Vader on the other hand does return to the Jedi order before he turned on Palpatine and threw him in the pit. Did Luke jump Jedi knight straight to Jedi master or what? I have no dout in my mine that Lucas meant Luke as the Jedi in the title because I'm sure you all know the original name "Revenge of the Jedi" but Lucas changed it because Jedi do not believe in Revenge. So I think the title "Return of the Jedi" would work better if Lucas meant Anakin is returning and not Luke. Let me know if this confuses you.

I always assumed it meant the Jedi as a whole, I never really gave it much thought.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Ditto. Maybe not at that moment, but the ending leaves us believing that the Jedi will once again return and bring "peace and justice" to the galaxy.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

I never looked at it as pertaining to an individual Jedi either. The Jedi Order itself was what was returning.

I'm sure you could argue it either way. I think that at the beginning of the movie, we are lead to believe that it is Luke - it's like, "Look, Luke's back, and now he's a Jedi Knight!".

But Yoda and Obi-wan throw us off-track after that - they tell Luke that he's not a Jedi until he confronts and defeats Vader. HOWEVER, I think we can all agree that Yoda and Obi-wan were mistaken about Vader - there was still good in him - and Luke was right.

So by the end of the movie, I believe that the revelation we are supposed to have is that the 'Jedi' that returned was Anakin. He came back and put things right.

But having said all this, I believe the title was chosen so that it could be interpreted all three ways: the 'Jedi' as Luke, Anakin, and the Jedi Order as a whole. My rewrite of Episode III is going to be called 'Fall of the Jedi', which operates on the same notion.

I don't remember yoda saying luke had to defeat vader to become a jedi, he just had to confront. Even vader confirms this when luke surrenders to him on endor.

That's true, but the point still stands.

I think they all are valid. That's what makes it a cool title, and frankly a better one than Revenge of the Jedi. That was a wise decision.

Return of the Sith would have been a cool title for Episode I. It would have bookended the saga perfectly AND would have been a stronger title.

....and the cycle will repeat.........damn, just thinking of that makes me happy.....because I know it will never be made into a movie and I can think of it all by myself.......just how I was happier before the PT and had my own vision of the OT history.

As for the topic........like someone above said, I think ROTJ can easily mean all three things.

I guess I like to use ..... alot

I always thought of it as the return of the Jedi Order, but personifying the title, I thought of Luke. Because the Jedi Order was returning, but it was being led by Luke. So both of those, I guess. I never thought of Anakin being the Jedi that returned. And, since according to Lucas logic, Anakin died as a young man, it really can't be him, now can it?

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Well, the German title (probably approved my Lucasfilm) is "Die Rückkehr der Jedi-Ritter"... which means "The Return of the Jedi Knights". So it's definitely not an individual Jedi here. And I always felt that the Jedi as a "religion" was returning here.

Well, since the word "Jedi" can be used as both singular and plural, perhaps it is meant in the plural sense in this case?

I would definately think of it as a multi-dimensional title. Regardless of its original meaning, it can be interperated as Anakin, Luke, or the Jedi in general returning. However, as to what Lucas meant by the title, I am 95% sure he meant it as the Jedi as a whole, not as a single person. Over the years the whole concept of Jedi and Sith has evolved to allow us to realize more meanings than that, but originally it must have just meant the group/order.
I just hate stupid people.

GO JETS!!!!
