ROTJ "Pre-film Training" Edit — Page 2

Yeah, I’m not sure. I think it might be the wording around it that gets me - to me, “revelations of Darth Vader” sounds right for plural, while “Darth Vader’s revelation” sounds better for singular.

Also, my apartment complex’s internet is still out, so while I’ll still be working on my rough proof-of-concept edit this weekend, I have no idea when I’ll be able to upload it for you guys to have a look at…

Thanks for the feedback guys! I will be sure to re-place the line at the beginning, but I think I’ll have it say “It is a period of open conflict”-- that way the line has more than a one-word difference from A New Hope’s opening line.

As for the “revelation”, I thought a lot about that. I obviously eventually put revelation, but I’m not sold on it. I definitely agree that revelations sounds better. The question is can we get away with it–any final thoughts on that?

JEDI: I didn’t see chainsaw’s post above until after I posted this (just FYI, I guess).

Don’t you think that opening the movie with some sort of Jedi training might give to ROJT a rehash feeling of TLJ ?

“I have to say that I felt George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.” - James Cameron about Episode VII.

Or will it be TLJ taking of from ROTJ’s edit. Abrams style!

JEDIT - All things aside (I’m ok with TFA being similar, just hope the next 2 will not do that.)

How do we know how TLJ will open?
And I don’t care either way. All I like is the OT. If changing to opening of ROTJ to something similar to TLJ makes ROTJ a better movie, then I’m for it. And people who like the ST so far seem to like that kinda thing anyway.

Well, one, we don’t know how TLJ will open, really. And two, no matter how you restructure the opening of ROTJ, there’s no training whatsoever to be seen - Luke has finished his training by the time the movie starts. In a restructure, it opens with Yoda telling Luke his training is complete and then dying. Don’t think TLJ will open like that, myself.

Quite some time ago someone suggested their ideal intro (apologies for not remembering who) which went something along the lines of:

Luke finishing construction of his lightsaber near the dark side cave shown in ESB. Luke then walks into the cave and is again faced with Vader, but this time Luke deactivated his saber and Vader disappears as his lightsaber would connect with Luke.

The idea was to show Luke has grown not only by building his lightsaber but also by learning from his previous failure in the cave.

Now I always liked the idea of something like this being shown after Yoda’s death but before Luke leaves Dagobah but I can see justifications for either way round.

The reason I bring it up is firstly I think it would look really good - Luke building his lightsaber isn’t necessary but it could be a really cool scene that fits perfectly into the OT. But also to make the scene you’d need a body double, a good costume, and some good models/background paintings. And all that is before the actual filming necessities. But if someone went that far for the few shots of building the lightsaber then why not add a few more of Luke standing to enter the cave, deactivating the lightsaber, etc, as the majority of the parts needed would be the same, and most of it could be done without any clear shots of Luke’s face.

Just another thought to throw into the mix.

I like that. These fanmade things are usually full of ridiculous adjectives or read too faux-Shakespearean.

Six long months now having passed
Since were seen our heroes last,
Whilst their friend, in carbonite preservation,
Awaiteth, unflinching, as a wall decoration

Hmmm…Not sure if this is a good idea for an opening crawl.

Wasn’t there some thing that Lucasfilm did between the St and PT where they released a bunch of Shakespearean sw books like “phantom of menace”?

Been trying to get started on the proof-of-concept edit, but I’m running into video converting problems with Avisynth and VirtualDub. If anyone has any ideas, I made a thread over in the technical discussion section.

JEDIT: Problem solved, carry on.

Okay, here’s my quick and dirty proof of concept edit.

I went with my initial sequence of events but decided to try cutting the Chewie/Boushh scene as discussed by others.

I did this very quickly before going to work. It finished rendering, I copied it to my phone, then left for work. (I mooched the work WiFi to upload it.) As such, there are areas I might have worked on more given more time.

So bear in mind:

  • The crawl is unchanged. Just imagine it’s different, because it has to be to sell this.
  • Threepio is still there when Han wakes up, but I cut his line and closeup. He’d need to be painted/cropped out or recolored to make it work.
  • The deleted scene is in worse shape than I remembered, but visually I think it could be polished to be acceptable (though never as good as the surrounding footage). The audio is a different story.
  • Obi-Wan’s ghost is gone.
  • I did a quick cut of the rebel briefing - this is one area I’d like to have worked on more. It’s iffy at best now.
  • This is only the first 45 minutes of the movie, as everything after the Tydirium exits hyperspace is unchanged.
  • I moved the Vader/Emperor scene after the rebel briefing to earlier, but I’m not convinced it works, particularly because there’s now no buffer between the briefing, Han giving Lando the Falcon, and the “fly casual” sequence.

And again, this is intended as proof of concept only. I also have not had time to watch it in one go yet, so it might play worse than I think it does (and I say that as someone who’s still not 100% convinced this is doable anyway).

So, here you go. Password is Restructure (the capital R is necessary).

Just watched it. pretty good! The only real problem I see is that it’s pretty obvious 3po is 3P0. Not sure how this could be changed easily.

Yeah, definitely. He’d need to be recolored or erased.

I also think this would flow better with the scene of Leia turning in Chewie, even though I agree with a lot of what has been said about the scene itself. Though I do kind of like the idea of revealing Jabba for the first time when Han is unfrozen. I’m just not sure how well the pacing works at the moment.

What did you think of my half-assed approach to “fixing” the rebel briefing scene? I think it could work pretty well with a little more polish. It cuts out pretty much all of the cheesy shit if nothing else.

I’ve not had a chance to view ChainsawAsh’s rough cut yet, but I wanted to thank YodaFan67 for creating the thread and everyone else for their posts.

It has been a welcome respite from the trivial minutiae and pettiness being debated in the Adywan thread.

Sorry I’m so late to replying. I usually don’t get around to checking this site often.

The rebel fix works well, I think. It suffers from the disease of “I remember what happened in the original film”, so any edits are immediately noticeable. So a couple cuts jumped out to me. The concept is there but it needs more smoothing over. Nice work though.
