ROTJ Liner Notes

So I finally completed my trilogy soundtrack collection.  I don't know what took me so long.  I got the soundtrack for Star Wars over five years ago.  But I finally got ROTJ the other day.  Of course, the problem is obvious.  The soundtracks I got for the first two movies were the '97 releases that had the extensive liner notes (which I love).  But they're out of print, so I got the '04 version of the ROTJ soundtrack, which just has a crappy fold-out poster.  Ugh!  I would love to know what information there is about the music, so does anybody happen to have a transcript (or know where I can get a transcript) of the liner notes that came with the '97 ROTJ soundtrack?

Man, that was the only one I ever bought!  I wish I still had it, if only just to help you out.

I can post a scan later tonight unless someone beats me to it.

A scan would be awesome!  Thanks!

(And while we're on the subject, what's the difference in actual content between the '97 and '04 soundtracks?)

Nothing at all in terms of content.  Except the sony have something called direct stream digital encoding, but i did not notice a difference.

If you ran them through a program to show you there wave forms i don't know if they would be different.

plus as far as i know these CD's are not effected and infected with the sony rootkits even though the disks claim to be copy protected they don't seem to be. They rip just fine from what i have read.

Still don't trust Sony CD's because of the rootkit fiasco.  Besides my anthology box got a lot more play in my cd player.  The star wars 2 disc Rca is tops but the empire strikes back and return of the jedi have numerous problems that only someone as well versed as goodmusician could explain.

Be interesting to hear what those problems are, though...

Good Musician explained it in detail a while back (good luck finding it with this site's new search function, though! :-P )

It had something to do with channels being reversed, etc.

He also agreed that the RCA and Sony discs were identical.

Really?  I could have sworn I heard otherwise.  ROTJ just seems so different from the other two.  Aside from promoting the special edition, the first two I have don't have anything special edition related, but the ROTJ has Jedi Rocks and the new ending song.  Then again, ROTJ is the only movie of the trilogy to actually have new pieces of music written for it.  The other two just used unused music cues for special edition-specific scenes, so maybe that's it.

I have all three of the 1997 RCA SE editions, and the ROTJ set has the exact same track list as the '04 Sony set you have with the photoshopped cover (including 'jedi rocks' and the new ewok/finale music).

My scanner is not compatible with my new computer- otherwise I'd be happy to scan the contents of the booklet for you. :-(  Looks like Sluggo is going to help you out, though.

It interesting to read the description of the music that was written for the scene where Luke builds his new lightsaber (the scene that supposedly was never filmed.....?)

The liner notes do give detail on the "Vader telepathically contacts Luke while he builds the lightsaber" section at the beginning of the film, which oddly enough has very little info on it considering that it was actually filmed and included in a sort-of final cut of the film.

How much text is in the liner notes and what sort of stuff is it about?

Also, do pre-97 soundtrack releases have stuff like that?

Author

it is close to 10 pages or so.

The Anthology set that came out in the early 90's (?) came with a booklet of notes as well.  Been a long time since I've read it.

Here is a great article that a portion of hightlights the problems on the 2 disc jedi set vs the anthology in terms of frequency response.

Wow- that's very interesting, thanks!

I just automatically assumed that the 2-disc sets had better sound than the '93 boxed set- guess I was wrong!

Well it is definetely cleaner sounding, but the digital noise reduction they applied destroyed the highs but uneffected the lows in the frequency information in the digital stream.  To Remove pops and clicks and analog noise.  I would rather have the noise instead of having the music ruined.

The thing is i never noticed the difference, it is worth noting you would only notice on high end equipment which reproduces the sound exactly.  I have shitty computer speakers so its all the same to me, and not the best hearing in the world.  If this person did not do the sonogram test i would have never known, unlike say rock albums that are destroyed through the so called Loudness War.  That is the opposite problem the lows are crushed in favor of the highs and mid range freq.

I'd hate to say it, but I'm having some trouble with the link, sluggo. I think it's a computer/OS problem, though. I just got a new computer with Vista, and for some reason, it's not recognizing the .rar extension. It doesn't know what to do with it. Shouldn't Vista already come with software for unzipping? My old XP did. Any thoughts?

Sorry about that, Mr. Tape.  Would a .zip file work better?

Yeah, I suppose so.  Like I said, I'm new to the Vista scene, so I'm still working through all this stuff.  If you get a chance, I'd appreciate it.  If not, where can I download WinRar or WinZip (I remember downloading WinRar on my old Win98 computer, but I could have sworn I never needed to on my newer XP computer...)?

Haha, I finally got it!  Thanks, sluggo and Davnes.  So, sluggo, I take it you have the original slimline packaged version of this, huh?
