RIP Gary Coleman

Author
Time

I can't believe no one's beaten me to the punch.  On facebook today, I saw one of my friends had switched his avatar to a picture of the animated angel Gary Coleman from The Gary Coleman Show.  At first I just thought he, like I, had enjoyed this rare cartoon from the '80s.  It was to my horror I learned later that day that he had passed from a cerebral hemorrhage.

We will miss you indeed.  I won't quote your catch phrase because I know you wouldn't appreciate it.  I'll just say thanks for all the memories, and I'll miss ya, buddy.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

And I just posted on this forum a few months ago asking why this guy could not pull his life together. Sad to say that for some time now some of us could see this guy having an early and tragic end to his life.

Well, as sad as I am that his life didn't turn out that well, it does seem like he's been off and on trying to kill himself for quite a while, so I'm actually quite pleased he finally got what he wanted.

I feel a bit sorry for him.

It couldn't have been easy for him to be known as Arnold from Different Strokes who is famous for one line.

I think he really just wanted to be left alone.

At least it was of natural causes and he didn't actually go through with killing himself...

So at least he didn't actually kill himself, you know?

I disagree.  The impact on friends and family left behind is quite different.

Yes, Warbs.  It is terrible to his family and friend regardless.  But if someone is suffering that much and really wants to die, I think it's terrible to throw that kind of guilt in his face and force him to remain to be miserable.  I honestly have quite a bit of respect for people who commit suicide.  No matter what anyone tells you about it being the coward's way out, it is NOT an easy thing to do.

but wouldn't it be better to solve whatever it was that was making him miserable.     I don't know what it was,  but unless it was terminal illness,  I would think there would have to be a better solution to his problems than killing himself.   Yes, sometimes it is the coward's way out,  and/or the crazy person's way out.   sometimes.

What?  Simply believing this a crapsack world with no redeeming qualities and that life isn't necessarily as precious as other people believe isn't enough of a reason?  Yeah, I do see where you're coming from, but I don't think you have to be cowardly or crazy to simply not want to live.  If he believes he'll find greater peace in heaven or simply by not existing at all, then I think that's a great choice for him to make.

Heh, didn't I make a "right to die" thread about six months ago?

maybe not, but I do think that some of the people that don't want to live are cowardly and/or crazy.

so what you think of suicide prevention programs and hot lines and such?

somehow, encouraging suicide just doesn't sit right with me.

Gettin' a little tired of seeing you twist people's words to the extreme Warb.

In what way did I twist words here?   I'm asking because I see what you are saying, and it is indeed becoming a bad habit of mine,  one I wish to stop.    I'm sorry.

Oy.  Gotta think before I speak.  I'm not paying any attention.  Comment retracted, at least here.

My apologies for starting drama that doesn't belong here.
