REY NOBODY - The 'Official' Fan-Editing Thread — Page 2

So instead of doing more important things, I wanted to take a crack at playing around with the Hangar Scene for a Rey Nobody edit. I like the potential of a “Rey killed her parents” version, but I wanted to try something more straightforward. It’s not as compelling, perhaps, but it is still less offensive than Rey Palpatine.

In this version of the film, I would remove any reference to Rey recognizing Ochi’s ship, or Rey seeing her parents in any vision. I may try to tackle the Force bond duel at some point, but in this version I would probably shorten the scene, and replace a lot of the dialogue with more generic taunts about Kylo sensing the darkness within her.

This version of the hangar scene just has Kylo Ren confirm Rey’s fears about the vision she saw earlier in the film. Rey’s reaction to info she already has might seem a little dramatic, but in my mind, I interpret Rey’s reaction as her starting to feel that her future is fated and inescapable. But a part of her is still in denial, convincing herself that Kylo Ren is lying in order to manipulate her.

Here’s a rough test for their hangar interaction: https://vimeo.com/447063673

And here’s an alternate line read for Kylo near the end of the scene, keeping closer to the original line: https://vimeo.com/447069546

Yes, Yes, YES!!!

Nice work RogueLeader! This is exactly the kind of quality I had hoped for when I made this thread! I do hope DominicCobb sees this, once his version becomes final I’m gonna need to create a compilation or something of all possible executions of the hanger scene.

Keep up the good work guys!

Great job!

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Awesome work, RogueLeader! That first clip is amazing. I’m looking forward to seeing how you edit the Force bond duel.

That’s definitely better than my take on the scene. I’m not sure the “his power” line works in this context though.

I suggested the idea of Rey killing her parents to FDS in one of their vids and by the looks of it, they liked the idea and ran with it.
Recently they released a few videos showing their work on the Reveal.

https://youtu.be/v4Cl4ngjsUk

https://youtu.be/1Ox6jluVeJ8

I think it’s a good start on the idea but the sound needs to be worked on a little, it’s missing that umph from Kylo’s original voice.

I recommended that the reveal be split into two parts, the first during the duel in Kylo’s chamber and the second in the hanger. That way there’s more screen time to play with.

The dubbing is pretty cringey but it’s a good attempt. I also hate their channel name, but whatever.

The dialogue feels so crammed in. I think if editors don’t stick to the original pacing of the dialogue, it will feel off.

I think it would be better if the reveal was split in two, the first part, during their battle in his chamber and then the second in the hanger. That way you have more screen time to better pace out the dialogue with footage.

  • Kylo’s chamber -
    *Rey holds the dagger
    Kylo:“Rey, you’re hard to find”
Rey: “You’re hard to get rid of”
Kylo: I pushed you in the desert because I needed to see it, I needed you to see it, who you are, what you did. (this can be taken from Poe’s interrogation in TFA).
    Rey get’s angry: “You’re lying”
Kylo: “I never lied to you. They sold you, because they feared you”
    Rey: “don’t!”
Kylo: “You remember more than you say, I’ve been in your head”
    Rey: “I don’t want this!”
    Kylo: “Search your memories”
    Rey: “No!”
Kylo:" remember them, see them! "
-After Rey blew up Chewie’s ship she sees a vision of her parent’s ship exploding. Now her entire memory is  restored, after years of blocking it out, she sees her young self elecetricuting her parents ship, with pure rage until it explodes.
Cut all exposition about Palpatine taking her parents, cut straight to them braking Vader’s stand.
-Close up of Kylo and Rey clashing blades.
Kylo: “It was you that destroyed the ship, You killed your parents Rey, you are no better than me.”
    Rey: “No…”

Next time they meet on the hanger he can tell her about Palpatine grooming them and that they are a dyad etc etc.

That’s how I would have gone about it ^

I agree with Rogue on the dubbing. The tone and emotion of the voice is just not what is needed in that situation. Maybe someone here has a good Driver impression, with some good voice modulation I think we can work the dialogue pretty smoothly into a Rey-nobody edit.

Nice work!

It’s funny, ROS was a mess of a film, yet the messiness of it actually makes it better for editing than any other SW film.

Has anyone considered just removing Kylo’s revelation scene entirely? Rey and co. rescue Chewbacca and get back to the ship. Maybe Kylo watches them take off, but that’s it.

The “vergence/force nexus” thing has been tossed around many times over the last months, but even if the dubbing were believable the amount of exposition is embarrassing, and it’s pandering hard to the “Rey’s a Mary Sue but Anakin’s the most special boy in the world” crowd. I feel it’s far more important to make this movie a satisfying end to Rey’s story. The vergence stuff is just not something Rey’s character would know or care about, no dramatic revelation, just “fanboys behind the fourth wall will know these nouns that mean ‘you are strong.’”

The “take the throne” stuff is definitely the best take on the hangar edits I’ve seen so far. Play up Rey’s fears of her future by implying the Emperor has foreseen the same. Still maybe not as dramatic of a revelation as it should be (though the timing of the words in the edit are great with the music), but a big step in the right direction if not a pretty decent final product. It also follows from TLJ well, where Rey flirted with the dark and Kylo wanted her to rule by his side, without the “you have evil Palpatine genetics” nonsense of the theatrical TROS. Plus, I really like “I know the rest of your story” now implying that Kylo know’s the end of the story, Rey’s future, rather than just additional details about her past. We shouldn’t still be obsessing over Rey’s past so much in the finale imo.

Both routes have their good and bad aspects, and it seems the focus on the dark throne is probably the “cleanest” route.

I would NOT focus on the whole dark side thing … or let alone her being tempted so much by it. Because of the last movie … Rey has no problem with the dark. She “dove in” the dark side in TLJ (Water time on the island) with no problem and NO repercussion from it. So there is nothing tempting Rey with the dark in the aspect of “If i start doing this, I will go bad” TLJ threw that concept out. She is immune to it apparently. Plus she has no REAL temptations to join the dark side at all. (The whole throne scene in TLJ with Kylo trying to persuade her to join had me roll my eyes. She JUST MET THIS GUY, had a “moment”, even though the day before he murdered his dad and is part of the space nazi army that has attacked her several times. That proposal was suppose to be tempting?)

If there is a way that focuses on THE VISION of her being on the throne, without Kylo egging her on to join the dark side, even if they have cookies, would kind of help keep the two movies … kinda connected.

Sigh Disney.

We get it Jarbear, you hate the sequels. Stop bringing it into every thread about them, it isn’t constructive at all.

I personally felt like Rey was very much tempted by darkness during TLJ. The instant she learned about the Force, she almost destroyed the Jedi temple with her dark power. She has this constantly pissed off look on her face throughout the scene in Snoke’s throne room, which culminates in her scream of rage as she breaks the lightsaber. I think the reveal that RogueLeader suggested is a great way to track that plot element into TROS, without the stupid “evil genetics” explanation of the theatrical movie.

Although I vented, I was being constructive with the suggestion of removing parts of Kylo doing any “dark side temptations” and just focus on her and the throne vision/talk since there really isn’t much real temptation for her character.

I’ll back peddle the sequel rants, but I was giving a suggestion about it. So let’s not play the ignoring the suggestion part and attack me aspect of it thanks.

But I already provided a counter for the idea that Rey has “no real temptation”. There were many examples of her doing dark side stuff throughout the sequels, so it doesn’t really come out of nowhere like you’re saying. I feel like RogueLeader’s added dialogue definitely tracks with her character in the previous movies.

My argument is not her USING dark side stuff, but the concept of her “turning bad” or joining the dark does not track. She doesn’t have any motivation for it. What would draw her from JOINING it. I am not talking about use of it, since well, she can use it no problem. She already has the power. What’s the temptation to JOINING the baddies?

Leaving that part out and just sticking to the vision of her on the throne keeps it simple without trying to tell the audience “Yep, we are again saying she is tempted, although without any real reason, but for the sake of the story we need to keep poking the bear” So instead, we wonder, like her, “Why would I be on the throne? I don’t want to join that side!” It is a mini mystery until the final showdown. And thus later during the confrontation with Palps … we get the “answer” to that vision. It’s not because she WANTS to join the dark side or has a desire to, but she kind of HAS to in order to stop him. Literally.

That’s what my thought is on it, or a suggestion if that makes any sense. We don’t see any real temptation for her to JOIN the dark side, JOIN the baddies, since she already has the power and doesn’t really have any “skin in the game” to be tempted for it. (Anakin joined up with Palps, the sith, since he wanted the power to save Padme. He went all in. Luke was not so blatant like Anakin in regards to “joining the dark side/bad guys”, but his father was on the Dark side and tried to tempt Luke after he lost to join him because A.) Join me or die and B.) Stop the Emperor and rule as Father and Son. Not sure how tempting the later part was, but there is at least some “skin” in the game since we are talking about his father that would stir some emotions or whatever … could argue if he was part of the rule he could change the empire … but mainly it was a life or death choice was the “temptation.”)

… I could talk about how did completely you missed the point of Rey’s arc in TLJ and how did you not paid attention to the movie at all.

But laying out opinions about the previous film and discussing it merits or shortcomings in a fanedit suggestion thread of a different film is unnecessary and derails the thread, there are countless threads for that already.

Not following something of the previous movie because in the opinion of someone “it doesn’t make sense” or “doesn’t work” is how we got the mess that was TROS in the first place.

The dialogue of @RogueLeader with her being tempted by the darkside, follows well her character and makes sense in the context of the previous movie.

Uh oh.

We have a code red in this thread!

Better stop the arguing or at least move it to the TROS discussion section before mods get involved. I’m glad you’re all sensible enough people to cool it down a little for the time being, but moving forward, let’s keep this thread open for Rey Nobody related fan editing ideas and experimentations! 👍

I apologize, I am not trying to turn this into a discussion, but I admit I ranted. I came up with an idea and the rational for it. I am not saying it’s my way or the high way, just giving an idea, discuss it, and move along for editing reasons. I certainly can remove my dislike for the movies, but I still like to at least give ideas for editing purposes for an attempt of a Rey nobody addition.

I think making a thread about a particular change that is both common and complex is a good idea. Different people will have different approaches to it, and this thread can help them.
