RETURN OF THE JEDI 1983 THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION DVD by Harmy (MKV, NTSC DVD5 AND PAL DVD9 AVAILABLE) — Page 13

I thought the ending celebration looked just fine; I didn't notice a jarring switch in the video quality at all (viewed on a 46" LCD).

Hacking together older footage and the new HD or DVD source was one thing that never convinced me about the "Classic Editions."

I think your approach of using the same source for as long as possible prevents it from looking as jarring. Especially when you could have salvaged part of one shot; just don't bother and let it be what it is. It looks better that way.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Well, yeah, it's different when it's one shot here and there but having the quality change from shot to shot for the whole sequence would look pretty bad. That was the problem with the Sarlacc pit scene but the altered shots were still  in such a minority there, that is would have been shit to use GOUT for the whole scene.

This looks amazing Harmy.  Could you please send me a link in PM?  Thank you.

Oh, and my earlier comment was meant to contrast my distaste for the Classic Edition with your current efforts which I really like.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

May I have a link to the MKV version, please? All I have now is my own DVD x264 rip, but it's very noisy and grainy so I haven't watched it in years. I'll never forget premiere night in 83 when I first saw this and I just can't stand the garbage Lucas added in the SE, although I did like that he removed the distracting black blotch inside the Emperor's hood in one scene. Best movie of 1983 and a treasured memory of my college years. Looking forward to reliving that. Everybody calls me crazy, but I prefer RotJ to ESB. ESB just has nothing as exciting as the speederbike chase and the forest is more beautiful than Cloud City. Thanks.

He didn't remove said blob, and it's still visible in this version.  Just thought you ought to know before you download it, so you're not surprised.

And you are crazy for liking ROTJ that much.  ;-)

Really? I've seen the SE once or twice on TV and I could have sworn the blob was removed. One of the few major distractions in the original. Never could watch that scene without my eyes always being drawn to the blob. Sort of like an irresistable black hole.

Well, the original versions on TV and home video were always too bright, which made the "blob" stand out much more.  It would have been very difficult to see in a theatrical presentation in either 1983 or 1997, much like garbage mattes.

The 2004 DVDs, however, were too dark, making the blob even harder to see.  Plus, on the one shot when it's clearly visible (the 'saber cross in front of the laughing Emperor), the lightsaber cores are all sorts of messed up.

Harmy, in fixing the lightsabers in this shot, had to brighten it up to the point where the blob is, unfortunately, pretty clearly visible once more.

But I'd rather have fixed lightsabers than fix the Emperor's head slug.

Yeah, aside from the things I wrote, I also prefer the sunny Tatooine desert to Hoth and all of Act 3 being that action-filled battle on the Endor moon and at the Death Star, where ESB had just a few people with blasters.

That's a shame. I would have thought Lucasfilm's digital wizards would have spent a little bit of time on that glaring flaw. I'm pretty sure I noticed it back in '83, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, well, "Lucasfilm's digital wizards" did such a good job screwing up what wasn't broken for the 2004 DVDs (and I'm not talking about new SE additions) that I wouldn't have trusted them to try and remove the "blob," either.

Got it, Harmy. Scanned through it and it's looking good. Thanks a lot. Of course, I won't actually watch it in full until May, just to try to recapture the late spring mood of that wonderful premiere. Oh, to be young again.

My apologies to Harmy and others for inadvertently hijacking this thread. I should have talked about this in the theatrical cuts vs. special editions forum. And now, back to your regularly scheduled program.

Oh, that's quite alright, now that the project is done (except for the PAL DVD9, which I hope to release this week btw.) this thread is pretty much dead anyway (although I would appreciate some more feedback).

Harmy,

Just wanted to say thanks for doing this. I popped it in over the weekend to check it out, and everything looks pretty good. I'm still looking for Hairy Hen's purist 5.1 to see how the sync is.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

The source of the mix used in the NTSC DVD is Belbucus' PCM LD capture, which was the source of h_h's mixes, so it should sync exactly the same as this mix does.

No; you can't use tsmuxer for DVD.  That link refers to AVCHD.  Use PGCDemux to demux the video and audio, muxman to remux the video with your new audio and vobblanker to reauthor the disc.  I can find more detailed instructions if you need them.

More detailed instructions would be great. I've never done this before.
