RETURN OF THE JEDI 1983 THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION DVD by Harmy (MKV, NTSC DVD5 AND PAL DVD9 AVAILABLE) — Page 11

Very good effort Harmy.

I've only watched it on my monitor but I liked what I saw. The subs will take a little getting used to only because I'm not used to seeing it that way.

The gout footage is most notable during the sail barge battle but that's to be expected. I was quite happy with the rest.

What version of the credits did you use? There's thx.com at the end but I didn't see any SE credits when I scanned through.

Thanks for the kind words. I used the SE credits but cut out the SE part :-) There's a visible transition where the SE subs originally started but I figured it shouldn't really matter, I think that being anal about the credits is just being anal for the heck of it. I only cut out the SE credits to make it approximately the right length.

Ok that's why I couldn't work it out I couldn't see the cut because I was just quickly scanning through it.

It's a fair compromise and I certainly don't care about the thx.com thing I was just surprised to see it when I didn't recognise it as the SE credits.

Oh, and thanks for all your hard work. And a thank you to those that contributed sound mixes, subtitles and who are working on the dvd encodes.

They actually look pretty good, though maybe the background image on the chapter page shouldn't change constantly and just change with each page. I look forward to the DVD.

Man, could you include those concept art paintings as an extra? I would love to browse through those after watching the movie.

And so far it looks pretty good. GJ.

I will consider it, if there's enough space left on the DVD but if you want, I can post the whole collection somewhere, I found them all on the internet but it was quite an undertaking to select the best quality ones and I still have some of them in low-res only.

Alright, thanks bro. It's just that a little extra is always nice addition to justify the menu itself. I would suggest replacing the low-res ones with original poster art (perhaps even the original Revenge of the Jedi poster), which are fairly easy to find in hi-res around the web, that is, if you can find the room in the dvd. Now that I think of it, it would actually make a lot more sense if the gallery alluded to the theatrical release itself. Perhaps photos of the opening day and poster art would make more sense than just a simple gallery of concept art.

Just an idea though.

Great, thanks. It's true that the images are cropped (they are all originaly 2.35:1) but they will serve the purpose of the menu better than the low-res ones.

Bloody hell Harmy!! That ROTJ theatrical reconstruction .mkv is the best version of ROTJ I have seen in years. Everything seemed spot on! Your colour correcting, adding in the old effects and using hairy_hen's 5.1 mix really brought the whole thing to life.

I am so pleased you have done this. All the other versions I have watched that are available, just don't match it in terms of preserving the ROTJ theatrical cut - either because of picture and sound quality degrading due to being laserdisc/vhs versions or the crappy GOUT transfer. Thanks so much!

I haven't downloaded the ROTJ PDE one yet. If that is anything like what I've just seen with the ROTJ theatrical reconstruction then I am in for a treat!

Are you going to do a Star Wars one like the ROTJ theatrical reconstruction? If you are, then I think you should do your own colour correction for that based off the 2004 HDTV broadcasts as you seem to have a good eye for it and it would keep it seperate from Ady's work. Plus, working with the main HDTV source file, you will retain more picture quality, rather than working with Ady's AVCHD colour corrected version (no offence Ady!).

Thank you, I'm happy that you liked it :-)

ROTJ PDE 1080p is very much like this reconstruction, (I used the PDE as the main video source for the reconstruction) it has the same colours and most of the same original shots are back, only a few of the less obvious changes are left in, namely the Rancor is the 2004 SE version, the SE sail barge recomposites are left in, the unmasking scene is the SE version and the ending celebration is re-cut using the HD fotage only (except of course the ghosts) to be as close as possible to the original but not using the GOUT.

I don't think I will do STAR WARS because Ady said that he'll be doing a DVD reconstruction and frankly, I'm sure he's bound to do a better job than me and the colour correction is likely to be different from his AVCHD. He also said he's working on ways to use the least possible amount of GOUT shots there. I don't know what he has in mind but I'm sure it will be awesome.

If anything, I'll be waiting for DJ's anamorphicised (and more importantly stabilized) GOUT V3 and then using that to make ROTJ PDE v2.0 with more SE removed, because I don't know how to get rid of the telecine shake in GOUT and it makes it impossible to make convincing composites.

Wasn't Adywan planning to do a theatrical reconstruction of ANH?

That's the first I've heard of this, and that is exceptional news.

By the way, is the password on the encrypted PDE files something that could be PM'ed to me?

(I know you've already done it, but it was a while ago and the message is no longer in my inbox.)

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Good news everyone :-)

Thanks to Chewtobacca's hard work, an NTSC DVD5 is available now!

Details:

NTSC DVD-5

GOUT chapter stops

no menu

AC-3 2.0 at 224kbps sourced from Belbucus' PCM.

Chewtobacca has done a wonderful job converting the film to NTSC, it is of course a bit softer due to the lower resolution of NTSC but the decrease in quality due to the re-compression is absolutely minimal. I would still recommend the MKV to anyone who has the tech to play it though, because it is still slightly better quality and resolution and it has better audio options at the same file size.

So you can send me a PM if you're interested in either the DVD5 or the MKV.

As for the PAL DVD9, it may take some time, because I'm currently in the middle of my exam time. Hell, I should be studying right now!!! :-D

I will wait for the PAL then. Keep up the good work brah, and good luck for your finals.

was there going to be a DVD-9 of the NTSC?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Author

I'll have yet to see about that when I finish the PAL DVD9 and then I'll decide. But unless there's an overwhelming demand for it (which in terms of this edit seems to be 3 and more people ;-D ) I probably won't do it. There will also probably be no PAL DVD5 either.

Been trying to watch your MKV on my Seagate FreeAgent Theater+, and I get audio but no video.  What video codec did you use?  (I'd rather not re-encode if I don't have to.)

Though from skimming through it on my computer in VLC, it looks very, very good!
