How will it be different from previous official cuts?
Can you give an estimated runtime? (As in "this movie would have been better as a single TV episode" or "this is a super edit of existing cuts".)

We are still working on this, so I don't want to say too much. But it will not be as long, the order of some of the scenes will be changed, and the soundtrack will be a mix of the old and new versions. I think it will feel more like an episode then a film, but as I say it's still in the works.

I'm glad to hear that you feel brevity is better for this edit.

It really always felt like an overstuffed episode without enough plot to sustain it.

UPDATE:
The editing work on the Widescreen "Special Longer Version" of Star Trek: The Motion Picture was completed at 6:16am Eastern Standard Time on November 16th 2007!!!!

Now I just need to burn this monster to a test DVD and take a look at it on the Big High Def T.V. tonight!
Let's hope for the best, as I would like to get this version out in the next few weeks for pre-view testing...

Thank you to everyone who helped!

To be honest, after working on this for all this time, I am getting so sick of looking at this movie! *Grin*

Sounds brilliant, are you doing copies on disk at all?

Are you aware of a new commentary that you can download on startrek.com? Is that on the set?

I'm not sure how we are doing distribution yet. We did not know about a commentary on startrek.com, but if it has to do with ST:TMP, we sure will add it. Thanks for the heads up on this!
I'll go check is out.

I am so excited about the special longer version -

Any chance of taking the time to restore the original theatrical trailer - or teaser using the footage from this release?

Awesome! As for the film - I still wish the BBC when they releaed the specail longer version in widescreen 5 years ago would not have cropped it - why would they have done this? They even billed it as widescreen! I just don't understand why that network would do that?

But you have made me forget about this with your release -

Question - what are you doing about the Checkov hadn spray scene then?

I have no idea why the BBC would do that...

As for the "Checkov hand spray scene", we just cut out the 2 seconds. It's not important to the story at all, so *SNIP SNIP*...

Assuming this is the same 'smirk shot' you discussed earlier would in not be possible to overlay the fullscreen image on the widescreen? the shot seems fairly static and there is no movement in the background.

Based on the clip you posted before it should be possible or is the difference in quality too great?

This just might work... I would have to get my hands on a better source for that shop. The laserdisc is so washed out and it would not look good. I was thinking of buying a VHS copy, just for that shot and also parts of the soundtrack that have lots of distortion from the laserdisc being over 25 years old.

THIS IS IT, It is in Widescreen

I think my copy is darn good and my of the TV version (see above)- and my fullscreen is directly from the laserdisc and it's not half bad.

Do you want me to send the two to you tommorrow and we can give it a shot - it would make your partner happy, lol

lmk!!!

I'll send both right a way!

Doesn't hurt to try..
If not to hell with it, it's only 2 seconds, lol But it is an important smirk...lol

Well fans, the testing for the extended version did not go as well as we wanted it to.

The quality of the video was just not what it should have been, and the audio from the laserdisc had some signs of degradation towards the end of the film due to laserdisc rot. So now we are going to redo the entire project from scratch.
At least now we know it can be done, and it will be done right. We just can't release video that shimmers as much as this does. I'm trying to get some new software, but money is tight. We have tried a number of options that seem to be working much better for us, so the remake should go much faster and smoother. I'm sure fans will enjoy this project, and will want it to look as good as it can.

All the best for the New Year!

Doesn't the DVD release contain nearly every deleted scene in existence for this film?

Nearly, but not all. The directors cut dvd has an all new soundtrack mix with updated sound effects, so you can't re-construct either the classic 79 or the 83 extended T.V. cut from the DVD alone. There are some chunks of scenes missing, as well as scenes that only have the new visual effects in them.

This project is going to fix that.
