Ah, so that's why we have to wait until March 28th to find out why these post boxes are being repainted.
As for the collectability, since it's a federal offense to steal the mail, that's probably why the post office doesn't seem to be putting any security into locking these things down. I'm still willing to bet that a few will show up on ebay and the mail will just be delivered to the post office as normal.
Just saw one of the mailboxes across the street from 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore... AWESOME!!! We briefly discussed the possibility of stealing it, till a friend pointed out that it would be "hotter than an ATM." Got a few pictures on my phone, if anyone's interested I'll see about getting them online.
I just saw one two days ago about a mile from my house in Green Bay, WI in front of a grocery store. My friends and I weren't sure if what we were seeing was right from the road but we went up to it and started laughing our asses off. I didn't know only 400 were being put out until I read this thread...so in a small way...I feel special.
Unfortunately, either someone stole it or the USPS took the covering off cuz it's back to normal as of today.

They seem to be doing that a lot. If you've had a chance to read the news items on TFN, a few people have noticed that the mailboxes look like R2 one day, only to be replaced with regular ones the next. Maybe they're moving them around?
That is really weird. What is the point in even decorating them in the first place if you are only going to leave them for a few days. I wonder if it is because people are peeling off the covering? I live in nowheresville, so my chances of seeing one out of the 400 is extremely slim.

I thought they were painted, not just covered? That would make it much more difficult to take the covering.
TFN has a link to a map of where all the R2 mailboxes have been discovered (so far). Check it out http://www.frappr.com/r2d2
There was a mini event here in Denver with the launch of the mailboxes. I wasn't there, but apparently there was a professional photographer taking pictures for a new stamp. Some of my friends dressed up for photos with one of the R2's. You can see them here.
