Question about the 2006 "GOUT" DVDs

Author
Time

Hey guys,

I’m looking to add the “limited edition” OT DVDs to my collection. I bought the boxset back in 2004 when it first came out, so when they re-released it two years later with the original theatrical versions, I skipped those as I had just spent money on the DVDs.

But years later, and seeing scalpers asking more and more for them, I figured it would be nice to own a set.

I’m seeing a couple listings on eBay for the complete Limited Edition trilogy, which comes with an outer box similar to what the 2004 set had. It’s not the same as the 2004 art, as that was all silver.

I’m not sure if these were ever official or not, or if they’re bootlegs. I only recall seeing them sold individually in stores, not as a set.

I see this set on eBay, which has an outer box. I thought it looked real enough, but then I also came across THIS one, which has a prequel trilogy as well - that’s almost assuredly a bootleg, because of the fact they’re all in crappy DVD cases without chapter inserts. That’s a pretty obvious sign.

Can anyone confirm whether or not there was ever a GOUT Trilogy sold, or if any that have that outer box are bootlegs?

Thanks

Don’t take this the wrong way, but…

Why?

Just download one of the many fine restoration projects here.

Because I’m a collector and I like having official releases. I do have the Despecialized Editions, but there’s something to be said about having the actual releases.

Those are both illegitimate. IIRC, the “Limited Edition” was never sold in a set, and not in skinny packs.

That’s what I thought. Just wanted confirmation.
The mini-poster chapter insert is legit, though, right? Looking at used releases, I see this one for example that has this mini-poster. I know it’s a fullscreen version, but I digress.

(Why did Fox even release fullscreen LEs? I doubt anyone who cares enough about the OTVs would want a cropped version…)

Yes they were, in 2008. I saw them in fye and Best Buy countless times before they were pulled before the BD release. There was a prequel set and an original set, the latter containing repackaged versions of the 2006 DVD sets. That aside the 2006 sets was also available in a tin case at Best Buy when they first came out (I know cause I have it).

The gold colour and the artwork is right BUT this is always 2 disc per movie deal. The second “bonus” feature disc is the GOUT.

Edit: Wait you get a pic of the damn thing on the first link - look at the back of the sleeve, it says Disc 2 features bonus theatrical etc etc. It’s all totally fine, box or not that’s the info you are looking for.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn’t have paid money for the GOUT in 2006, nevermind 2017.

You should probably just get your hands on Team Negative 1’s Silver Screen Edition of Star Wars '77 and the grindhouse releases of Empire and Jedi. The picture and sound are based off actual release prints.

I was not aware of this. I ignored the entire thing, honestly. It is funny that a “Limited Edition” release was repackaged a couple times.

Ah, interesting. So that outer box WAS official?

You do realize bootlegs copy the official artwork, right? The second auction I linked has them in cheap looking cases (I could understand one of the cases breaking and replacing one, but ALL SIX?) with no chapter inserts. I know at least the prequels had chapter inserts originally.

The first one doesn’t show pictures of the inside, but I can send the seller a message asking if he can send me some.

um, isn’t the audio from laser disc? (at least it isn’t the print audio).

If those are bootleg discs, they look awfully good. (I got burned on a factory sealed bootleg Beatles CD box set several years ago, and the sub par disc labeling was one of the giveaways.) Are we certain there was no other retailer exclusive packaging like Walmart had with the comic books included?

You’d be surprised how good bootlegs can look. I made this video a few years ago showing real vs. fake Studio Ghibli films, aside from the fact they used the wrong artwork it would be relatively hard to tell. Photos taken from a distance would look just like authentic ones - thankfully they used the wrong art so it’s obvious, but in the case of Star Wars there was only ever ONE box art, so that’s not a factor.

Yep 😃 On a few occasions I was even attempted to get those sets, at least the one for the original trilogy, but passed because there wasn’t anything new I was technically getting

I have a few bootleg SW discs myself. I’m fascinated by the ones with horrible engrish spelling or text copied from a totally different movie. If there had ever been a bootleg Star Wars Laserdisc, I’d probably want it for my collection. 😉

On second glance, I see where they slipped up with the prequel set. ROTS doesn’t have a disc 2 with the bonus features, but has The Story Of Star Wars instead, which was a limited time Walmart exclusive.

If it is, I didn’t know that. Could’ve sworn they said in the first post of their thread that they were sourcing the audio from the print itself but that was forever ago.

Which LD mix did they use?

I bought that disc separately once I realized Walmart got it as an exclusive, since I already owned all 3 prequels.

And yeah, often the bootlegs do have Engrish and such, but they definitely do photocopy the original artwork and use discs with art on them so it’s pretty hard to tell from low resolution photos.

I’ll message the first seller asking for pictures of the insides, if they have the right kind of case and the chapter inserts/mini-posters, I’ll buy 'em.

I quick look on Amazon reveals a 6-disc set with that very outer box.

Well crap.

I messaged the seller, he posted a new picture… definitely bootlegs. They have the cheap Chinese-style cases (the real ones had a flippable portion in the middle, the left of the box was still used for the chapter insert), and also notice no MPAA rating on the discs.

This is why I asked!

Time to look some more…

Amazon doesn’t vet it’s third party sellers much, if at all. I bought a DVD off of Amazon, and the seller sent me the wrong movie. It was an obvious Asian bootleg. I eventually got what I ordered, and that was legit though.

It’s sad and ironic the GOUT is being bootlegged at this point.

Yeah, but the people who make the bootlegs know there’s still a market for it. Anything that’s out of print and still collectible is a viable market. That’s why Studio Ghibli was a big target, because those films were super popular and Disney “vaulted” them, so the bootlegs sprung up.

The guy sent me another message saying he bought them “directly” from Amazon so they can’t be bootlegs… I’m not so sure about that though, they’ve goofed in the past and accidentally sold bootlegs. I might ask if he can pop one of the discs in a computer and see what size it is - all the Ghibli bootlegs I got were DVD5 sized (obviously), whereas the real ones would be DVD9.

I bet there are a lot of people out there who never realized their dvd players had a setting to make everything not look like stretch-o-vision and now have blu-ray players that are set to display everything in 16:9 by default.

Some of those people are in for a rude awakening when they pop in the GOUT and realize there’s no good way to watch in on their modern setup.

Don’t most Blu-ray players have a zoom setting for non anamorphic DVD’s? I know Panasonic does.

eBay is absolutely laden with Star Wars bootlegs

The 2004 DVD box set has been bootlegged and is sold daily on eBay for like 22$.

These complete saga dvd sets are also being sold for like 35$ a pop and an official DVD complete saga set doesn’t exist.

Also, on fake Blu Ray and DVD complete saga sets, they always mislabel the rating for ROTS as PG
