No one seems to have answered this. There's an explosion because he's thrown down the reactor shaft. Presumably the oxplosion was as big as it was for dramatic purposes (i.e. it looked cool).

Anybod notice that in too many cartoons, eyebrows are black no matter the hair color? Blonde guys shouldn't have black eyebrows.

And the main offender I was thinking of was Fairly Odd Parents. At least in DBZ the eyebrows change with hair color.

LOL....that gives me an idea.
"Return of the Jedi was just aired on a network over here, the 97 version. Nice to see Mr. Shaw back where he belongs, eyebrows and everything"
Where, exactly, is "here"? Are you in the US?
MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.
MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.
JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

The BEST answer I've seen about this was given by... uh... someone's whose name I must not say. It was something like this:
Obi-Wan meets Qui-Gon's ghost:
"Master why didn't you disapear when you died?"
"I did! Did you check my pulse? You burned me alive!"

With this prompt, Yoda discovered the Unifying Force, a more powerful level of the Force. This is why ObiWan and Yoda dissapered, so they could guide Luke even if they should die.
