I was one of those who were able to finish downloading. Like Asaki, I got the WinRar extraction errors but the output resulting files seem fine. I've skimmed over it, and it looks absolutely wonderful.

I'm surprised how much cleaner PSB is over PG. Very, very fun to watch! It's got that brilliant 16mm filmic look, which garnered PG so many fans, but just cleaner. As ESB was the worst GOUT release, it's nice having this release. At last, we get a good contrast scheme, much better than that very-crushed 2004 master.

I'm also glad to have two audio options. I'll probably watch the 16mm mono audio track to complete the experience. I think it'll gel better with the video than the cleaner stereo track.

If I was reviewing this in the "Last movie seen thread," I'd give it:

5 out of 5 broken hyper-drives

Really looking forward to an HD version whenever it happens...

Given that the HS was shown overseas, it's not impossible a kinescope type version exists on film. NTSC video conversion to other tv standards wasn't very good back then.

Unfortunately, except for that one Ebay scammer several years ago, nothing real has ever popped up.

thanks puggo for all the hard work,

and to all the people that helped you with it too..

i just finished watching it along with the extras..

looks great, and the color correction by adywan

really helped out.. i know i felt like i was watching

the real film from time to time..... (and yes, it matches

up with our version pretty well too!)..

3/4 inch or "U-matic" as Sony called it, was barely broadcast standard. (Sony initially tried marketing it as a home video format a few years before they tried Betamax!) I used it in high school and college. It was popular because it was affordable for small tv stations and other budget minded institutions.

CBS and Fox could afford more expensive formats.

Where were you in '77?

Just started playing it...as someone else said up there, that bonus is really awesome. Also enjoyed the little 'making-of' thing, as I'm probably gonna be too lazy to ever give this thread the reading through it likely deserves. What can I say? You're a hero for putting yourself through all this tedious crap, especially wrt the audio. Thanks a lot!

It's late, so I think I'll be saving the viewing for another time, but can't wait! And I'm glad I know a bit more about the absurd amount of work that went into this.

Ah thanks for the clarification. I'm not very familiar with broadcast material - especially old vintage equipment.

But enough about the x-mas special...

Puggo! This transfer is awesome. Plain and simple. As someone stated above, this is much cleaner than SW and yet still retains that 16mm awesomeness.

I noticed that the mono sound kinda clips at times. Sounds like someone years ago did a poor job mastering the audio for 16mm optical (which has a piss poor dynamic range of about 20 dB)

WinRAR opened it for me. 7ZIP will probably open it without giving an error.

It looks like it was done on a Mac, so Stuffit or something will probably do the trick if need be.

The zip is slightly corrupted. I was unable to use File-roller, I needed plain unzip for uncompress it.

Amazing, BTW. Love to see the old special effects and all the dirt back before they recomposited them on 1995. Thank you Puggo for an amazing transfer.

EDIT: Ah, I see it, you have uploaded a new torrent to that page. So the new one has been corrected?

Got the new upload, only took 2.5 hrs! Will keep seeding as long as needs be.

Thanks to all those naughty sharing types.

And once again a massive thank you to Puggo, Jaxxon and co. for all your hard work on these preservation's, you creative and generous people on this site are keeping the real Star Wars trilogy alive for many generations to come.

One last thank you to George Lucas and his crew with out whom we wouldn't have these great movies to begin with.

Now whens "Return of the Puggo" ready? :-)

I have two ways of capturing 16mm optical mono... using my Elmo 16CL or using my Eiki slimline. When capturing I set the output and input levels so that *I* am not clipping anything. However, there could be clipping in a myriad other steps I have no control over; the mechanism in home 16mm projectors for reproducing the sound is pretty crude. I also have to imagine that the process for printing the sound is also limited in accuracy by the film grain. They probably compress it sufficiently to produce good saturation and volume.

Now, you may have noticed that the level in mine never goes above about 75% of the available headroom. That's not because I clipped it there... I actually lowered the levels to that so that it wouldn't blast your speakers when switching from stereo to mono.

Thanks everyone for the very kind feedback. It was fun, abeit slow, to put together. Working in the little nooks and crannies of my time, this one took a year and a half.

Return of the Pug - watch the ROTP thread. It should come together similar to PSB. Adywan color correction is the next step; it's slow and a bit frustrating... the last copy of the capture that I sent him was lost in the mail! That killed a couple of months, because mailing parcels from California to the UK seems to take about a month - and that's airmail first class. Ugh.
